    Nice "thick" Sherrymalt, on which one can chew long. On the tongue and in the finish, he keeps what he promises with the very inviting nose.
    • Nose
      90 90
      A full, thick nose that initially presents raisins, dates, leather and wood. Spicy and dark fruit, clearly sherry-embossed. Lined with a slightly musty note, moist clay soil and mushrooms.
    • Taste
      90 90
      Strong start with sweet overripe grapes. Prunes. Pepper, cloves, cinnamon, coriander. Licorice notes. Also on the tongue, the sherry shows very clearly. Some wood as a base. Over time, tart herbs will go through and it will become mentholig. Nougat chocolate and marzipan, some malt.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Medium to long, dry. Still the beautiful combination of spices / herbs and the sweet grapes. With dark chocolate, caramel and coffee beans.

    [June, 2018]  I had this dram during this year's "Feis Ile" tasting session.

    If you like the usual Moine profile you will find this dram excellent, most probably.  If not (like me) it is average only but still it is very quaffable...
    • Nose
      86 86
      The colour is chestnutoloroso sherry and the texture shows a sticky ring with small and rather fast tears. The nose is a typical "Moine" one: a somewhat dirty mixture of sherry and peaty aromas. I know a lot of people like this but not me, unfortunately. I prefer clean drams, simply.
    • Taste
      85 85
      The taste is sweeter than the nose with fine sherry flavours (that I like) and a major peatiness in a firm wooden setting. Actually, this is nicely balanced.
    • Finish
      87 87
      The whisky arrives hot and not coating at all in the mouth with a minor astringent moment from heavier tannins. The finish is of medium length and adds some more fruits and spices. Water is not recommended because it unlocks bitter flavours mainly (what happens quite often with heavily sherried drams).

    with water: no, he definitely doesn't need it, but a few drops

    Conclusion: Bunna Moine with a good sherry barrel always works very well together, here too!
    • Nose
      salty sherry with a good smoke, some sulfur, tire wear, dark sweetness, dates, hazelnut, plums, tar, deck planks
    • Taste
      Amazingly tame on the tongue, great and thick sherry sweetness, dates and plums, then comes the smoke, which grabs with a little salt, chocolate
    • Finish
      long, forever long, brilliant combination of sherry, salt and smoke

    • Nose
      88 88
      First a lot of smoke, but soon it dissipates and makes room for fruity notes, raisins and caramel. Creamy sweets and sherry.
    • Taste
      92 92
      Dark chocolate immediately on the rise, followed by sweet sherry notes and distinct but pleasant integrated alcohol. Very warm.
    • Finish
      91 91
      Bitter chocolate, cocoa beans and licorice. It burns a bit, but that is well integrated. Full-bodied, medium-long feeling in the mouth.

      Oily, creamy, nutty, liquorice, tobacco, subtle sweetness, peaty, smoky, medicinal, sherry wood, hints of rubber and leather - not bad

    in 2018 they sold that for £95 in the Distillery shop - a great P-L-V;
    A very intense, smoky, heavy sherry malt - a top malt!
    [Color:] = mahogany;
    • Nose
      89 89
      aromatic wood smoke, raisins, figs, sherry, nuts, distinct spice (pepper, pipe tobacco);
    • Taste
      91 91
      with water: powerful sweet oily finish, spices - mainly pepper, heavy sherry, dates, raisins, dark chocolate, aromatic woody smoke, pinch of salt;
    • Finish
      90 90
      a long sherry-stressed finish, dark chocolate, salty-smoky aftertaste;

    A little bit closed off, either from heat or youth, cannot tell for sure. I assume youth, though. Sherried peat is almost always a winner, and this one is quite good. It sadly seems to be missing...something. Mostly on the palate, there’s just too much spice or something. Peat is definitely present, but not overtly strong. I am not usually a fan of Bunnahabhain, though some of the peated ones can hit nice. Good stuff.
    • Nose
      Thick, fruity, sweet smoke. Cherrblueraspberry. Burning lint, but in a good way. If you get in deep, the smoke starts to say “Laphroaig” but not scream it. The cinnamon helps add to that. There’s a corny barbeque note to it.
    • Taste
      Loads of berries, all mixed together, then a sweet and sour peat smoke that seems Laphroaiggian. Some spice, paprika, black pepper. Very rich berry sweetness, though none of it all that distinct. Maybe raspberries and blueberries mostly though. Cherries too, I suppose. Chocolate. Chocolate cherries? No, let’s not be ridiculous.
    • Finish
      Milk chocolate, peat smoke. Long finish of berries and acidic smoke.

    Sherry bomb, very enjoyable malt, attention wh***, release price for the age was just alright, too expensive nowadays on secondary market.

    I’d forgotten I’d tried this before, and at the distillery itself during Feis Ile 2018 [WLP85].

    C: Sherried malty slight-tyre bonfires, the vegetal-sweet smokiness fairly integrated. Overall though, it’s the richness that impresses the most. Doesn’t do a great deal – like the standard Moine – but the rich sherry spicy abv-strength keeps things chugging along very nicely indeed.

  17. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

    I like the great interplay of smoke and strong sherry influence, rounded off by a creamy citrus note
    • Nose
      It's already well drunk, plus the musty and tobacco-like smoke, somehow also cold, plums, espresso, a lot of tobacco, which almost scratches your nose, a sweet vanilla overtone, some lemon cake, and then the musty smoke comes back, short cheese feet , a really wild, but also interesting and ultimately beautiful nose, now there is also smoked bacon, slightly salty, chocolate, whole milk, and then suddenly a rather berry sweetness strikes, strawberry jam, exciting
    • Taste
      Campfire smoke, intense, tingling, first the sweet berries, cinnamon, chocolate, then it gets stickier, raisins, espresso, the now ashy smoke envelops everything, sweetness lingers on the palate and represents a good counterpart
    • Finish
      Creamy, vanilla, smoke, slightly nutty, now also the lemon on the nose, very clear, therefore drier, now I have to think of a citrus-containing dessert again, long-lasting

    Very dark sherry, amarena, blackberry liqueur, very fine smoke. Wood saturated with sap, apricot juice, forest peat. The smoke goes well with blackcurrant, red fruits are essential, plums, muscat grapes, blueberries. Earth, campfire, barbecue, melting fat. Quite greedy mouth, spicy, varnished wood, red plum, crushed strawberry. Clove. The finish takes us very far, charcoal and heather earth, humus, ferns, spicy caramel, salted butter, hint of anise.

    [Only] £75-80 for a bottle yet £10 for a 2.5cl taster?! Thank goodness for friends. Tasted blind.

    N: Despite the big & firm contemporary first-fill action, the distillate comes through. I’m getting more PX vibes than oloroso - wrong!
    T: A spicy sweet peaty number.
    F: Peaty vegetal >smoky barley before becoming sweet and ashy.
    C: Decent, fun and well made.

    Very good festival expression from Bunnahabhain. Complex nose, a bit closed on full ABV but opens up with water really well. Palate isn’t that complex but in spite of that is full-bodied and very pleasant. Finish is long and gentle. Excellent whisky as for 10 year-old. Hard to find and quite expensive but definitely worth tasting.
    • Nose
      Light smoke, dried fruits (apples, prunes, raisins), clove, red berries, oranges, lemon peel. Water opens up tropical fruits and intensifies berries (red currant). Also some wet wood and grassy notes.
    • Taste
      Sweet, slightly spicy (ginger), gently smoky, smoked prunes, caramel, citrus, later come oaky notes.
    • Finish
      Quite long, dry, sweet, a bit oaky, leather, some malt and nuts.

    Quite a load of sherry wich was followed by quite some peat. that was the first impression of this one. Sherry is nice, moldy wine cellar, some nuts, some dark chocolate, dried dark fruits. all the is combined with a nice peaty and even a bit salty note. Nice complex and well done sherry/peat combination.
