    The most recent release in the Experimental Series (already available in some market, but in Belgium only from January 2019 forward, unfortunately) is this Glenfiddich Fire & Cane. It is a very atypical Glenfiddich – so perfect for this series, eh? – because daringly peated. With its 8ppm (hence the ‘Fire’) this makes for a smoky Glenfiddich. The ‘Cane’ refers to the rum casks on which this Glenfiddich – after regular maturation on bourbon cask – was finished. I was able to try it at a fantastic Glenfiddich Experimental Series Tasting Experience in Brussels on the 17th October and was very pleasantly surprised.

    The nose starts very sweet on barley sugars, juicy peach, dried apricots, tinned pineapple and green banana. Then some bresilliene nuts and baked pear, soft spices from the wood and… there it is: a delicate smokiness with a salty note. Exotic and atypical and delicious.

    Wonderfully creamy and full-bodied, immediately sweet and spicy (toffee, baked pears, apples with cinnamon and cloves) in a smoky jacket. Yes, you can taste the rum notes. This is nicely balance and a very good combination.

    The finish takes me to a dying camp fire, where I slurp some hot mocha with a piece of toffee. The spices linger the longest: nutmeg, pepper and cloves.

    Not exactly what you would expect from Glenfiddich. A peaty Glenfiddich on rum cask: doesn’t have to get much crazier than this. But when it’s this good, you can only call it a successful experiment. This bottle will lighten up many a cold winter’s evening.

    tasted too quickly, a good surprise:
    with fresh peat, fruit on the apple and sweet pear!, vanilla, spices making it a singular mixture, but no less interesting!

    Water: No, it's pretty thin

    Conclusion: And again a successful experiment that transfers Glenfiddich to another level. Harmonious and well-balanced, in the mouth then the surprising after the nose Torfexplosion, while he returns in the finish to its roots. But unfortunately too weak on the chest, why not fill a drop with 46%? Then this malt would have become a hit with a little more maturity.

      Gentle, but noticeable dry smoke (charcoal fire, smoked bacon), preserved fruits such as peach, pineapple and apricot, malty and sugary sweetness of beet syrup (Grafschafter Goldsaft), overall very harmonious, but a bit thin

      he starts with a marked sweetness of sugar and a fruit cocktail, then the smoke hits with unexpected violence, the smoke also has significantly more peat flavors than in the nose

      unfortunately this is a bit too short, next to the peat smoke, of course, the sweetness comes through again, but this does not dominate, behind you can then notice with the pear notes, carried by some oak the typical Fiddich 12yo distillery character

    for me it's not a successful experiment and it's not because of the smoke
    Glenfiddich + Rum + Rauch that doesn't fit, but with Rum you can see it on the Gran Reserva

    Peated Glenfiddich matured in bourbon barrels and finished in Latin rum casks? Okay, sign me up. I was drinking socially but was pleasantly surprised by this offering (maybe because I had such low expectations to start). Very sweet on the nose. Salted caramel. Baked pears. Some mild rum funk, tropical fruits, bananas. Similar notes on the palate - slightly thin mouthfeel, mild smoke, sweet notes for sure (brown sugar/molasses), mild rum funk, baked apples, peppery. ⁣

    I'm unashamed to admit that I thought this was a pretty decent pour. It's young and could benefit greatly from some extra aging. Probably would make the flavors more harmonious

    I'd rate it around 86-ish range, but I'd kill for a 10-12 year cask strength (or 46% abv) release of this! Glenfiddich, you can do it!

    Curious swatch. You rarely see smoky Glenfiddick ...

      Wool, farmyard, old leather, smoke, tar, fudge.
    • Taste
      Smoked meats, lemon and rye bread.
    • Finish
      Medium, dry, with hints of smoke, spices, malt, fudge. At the end, some oak and phenols again.

    A nice addition to the Glenfiddich Core Range. Very good to drink and amazingly intense in the mouth. I like it quite well.

      creamy, vanilla, slightly molasses, quite light and simple, slightly ashen smoke, but only as an undertone, apple, both rum influence and smoke not very dominant, generally sweet, overall quite pleasant to smell
      after the first sip of intense vanilla, also slightly banana
    • Taste
      oily and creamy, clear smoke, ashy again, also here more rum, molasses, sour, vanilla, not so sweet, apple, slightly dry, the 43% are here a starch that transports the taste quite well
    • Finish
      Dry, dry, slightly sticky, yes again ash, and this dry ash also lasts the longest
