[December, 2018] This is another dram out of this year's advent calendar from Cadenhead - which is a good overview of their 2018 releases and I always appreciate the opportunity to do such a samples tasting around christmas time.

I never was a fan of grain whiskies but from time to time I enjoy a small dram like this one. But to be honest, one such dram is enough to satisfy my curiosity...
    • Nose
      85 85
The colour is pale gold and the nose is very "old grainy" with lots of aceton and other solvent notes beside the usual fruity and sweet sugary aromas. There is quite some wood too but it never gets too dominant. All in all a fine nose for a grain whisky - but I am not a grain-head at all...
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is bitter-sweet on barley sugars and heavy tannins from the oak. After some chewing yellow and dark fruits pop up together with some spices. Nonetheless, this is a rather simple profile and not very interesting to explore - but easy to sip.
    • Finish
      82 82
The dram arrives warming but not much coating on the palate with a minor peppery feeling. The finish is rather short and gets quite bitter and drying-astringent (tannins) which is not to my liking. Some water tames the tannins somewhat and releases more vanilla-toffee flavours that are highly welcomed. I like this dram best when reduced to about 46% abv.

Nose is quite alcoholic, some sweet grain notes, yellow fruits and quite some oak.On the tongue a sirupy sensation, sweet, dry, bitter (wood) and fruity (plums). Reminds me of chewing fresh sugar cane.

The finish is on the bitter (woody) side, still peppery strong and harsh.Water helps the alcoholic and the woody side somewhat, brings out some vanilla. Definetly better with water but still a bit harsh in the finish, which I prefer over the woody finish w/o water.

    From a 2 cl sample.

Top part! I am thrilled, especially. because he is more in the direction of single malt and wants to be discovered in a very diverse and complex way.
    • Nose
Leather, cereal flavors, little that sweetness of the typical grain, goes more towards peach
    • Taste
wow, delicious! Versatile and complex - slightly oily and syrupy. Changes in the direction of raisins in the glass - I had not yet with the Grain!
    • Finish
      medium - long and fruity
