  1. KB201 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

The Lagavulin classic is kilned with a high proportion of smoke in the malt. The stills at the distillery are pear-shaped, allowing all of the flavors to be transferred to the condensers during distillation. The single malt then matures to perfection in bourbon and sherry casks.
    • Nose
Intense peat and vanilla. A raisin sweetness keeps the smoke at bay. Iodized peat and crispy roasted malt.
    • Taste
Sweet and delicious, grassy malt notes then peat attacks, smoke fills the mouth. Selectively very salty seaweed, coffee and vanilla with fruit.
    • Finish
Incredibly long, even for an Islay. Fruit, peat and long-lasting oak.

  2. Saftkenner scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Great and very elegant standard bottling with a great price-performance ratio.
    • Nose
      88 88
Elegant and maritime smoke, a distant campfire by the sea. Vanilla, toffee, orange, tobacco, leather, old farmhouse, sea freshness.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very oily and strong for only 43% drinking strength.
Smoke, orange, tobacco, cherries, leather, oak spice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long finish. Smoke, vanilla, orange, oak seasoning.

  4. marmeladow scored this whisky 94 points Expert Senior

Very powerful, lively and complex. The maritime ham and smoked aroma is fascinating, which remains long even in an empty glass. Great PLV at € 46. Tasting with a half-empty bottle, the drams became significantly more velvety, smooth and complex within 3 days with increasing contact with the room air - at the beginning smoke and ham dominated somewhat one-sidedly, which should not be irritated and led to a hasty judgment.

  5. HammerHead scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Had two drams from this batch yesterday evening. I must say, still very quaffable, but quality is waning somewhat the last few years. The nose is less outspoken compared to bottlings of 10 or even 5 years ago. Also more of a dusty wood feel in the finish.
Overall it remains easily recognisable as Lagavulin though.

Classic dram which holds up to the test of time... never had the older versions, but this 2018 bottling is very enjoyable, a bit harsh at first, but it eases when you give it a few moments to breathe

  10. Buecherwurm scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

Nose: strong phenolic, very smoky, light sherry sweetness, very full-bodied, tobacco, well-cared-for leather

Taste: Campfire, ashen, tingling, astringent, spicy

Finish: long, cold smoker, tobacco, leather

Conclusion: nice smoker, but nothing for every evening

I had 3 glasses of this last night and I think the 2018 Laga 16 is as good as ever in fact this bottle is more potent than I remember, more brine and peat and some liquorice.
Someone I was with had a tiny sip and was almost sick and he said he could taste is for ages, well 3 glasses , possibly 4 set me up for the night that is for sure, still good value even if it is approaching £60 in some places
