Whisky Reviews for Balblair 1999

2 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 90.00 points

  1. Malzbrenner scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A very "juicy" and multi-layered whisky, which has its strength in the many fruity aromas. The alcohol is very nicely involved and does not bother the nose or the palate. A wonderfully soft sweetness accompanies the enjoyment without ever being intrusive. A very consistent drop of desire for more. There is still a lot to discover.
    • Nose
Very fruity at the first creeping in, dark cherries, oranges, plums, some banana, almonds, some cedar, milk chocolate, some honey and very soft sherry notes. The alcohol is great and does not stand out.
    • Taste
Very juicy and fruity, oranges, pleasant sweetness, some dark chocolate, malty, some vanilla, oak notes, some leather and dry sherry.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet and smooth with a nice vanilla and sherry finish.

An extremely nice surprise being a travel retail release, this Balblair tastes atleast its apparent 18 years and has alot of depth and nuance. Highly recommended. Be aware that this is the 1999-2017 version specifically. There are both 15' and 16' releases that differ somewhat.
    • Nose
      92 92
Deep pot of stewing fruits, dark; plum, date, pickled apple, sherry influence is clear but not overpowering (Amontillado?), ripe pear, hints of tropical fruits, ripe banana, mango, papaya, some spice, pepper, chili, hint of lemon or lime zest towards the end. Tonnes of different notes down there.
    • Taste
      92 92
Fruitcake with candied orangepeel and dark chocolate glaze, malty tones, slight oak bitternes that goes well with the chocolate, creamy and delicious in the back of the mouth
    • Finish
      90 90
Dries out slowly on the same notes, dark chocolate, bit of coffee, well balanced and medium to long.
