[April, 2019] Bunnahabhain changed its style significantly over the last decades - from a clean, delicate and complex dram to a dirty and simple "spiked" modern whisky these days. So I am curious about this 18-years old - is it a traditional or a modern Bunna?

It is a dirty one, unfortunately. I am sure many modern whisky drinkers like such a profile but I do not - I prefer a clean and delicate distillate over such cheap thrills (heavy bitter woods, slightly sulphur-spoiled sherry). I will take Bunnahabhain off my list of preferred distilleries very soon, most probably...
    • Nose
      83 83
The colour is deep copper and the nose offers a slightly dirty modern sherry profile with some cheesy and sulphurous off-notes. The sherry itself is not very bold and still leaves enough space for the malt characteristics, too bad the off-notes are stronger than the pleasant ones.
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is herbal-sherry driven with significant bitter flavours (bitter nuts, green tea, tannins) that turn the dram very dry. The sweet sugars are there, of course, but they never dare to enter the spotlight. After some chewing a dark chocolatey flavour emerges together with some spices. Sorry, this is not my preferred taste (it is too bitter-drying).
    • Finish
      80 80
The initial mouthfeel is hot-peppery and sulphurous-coating with a minor bitter-astringent moment. The finish is long and gets even more drying-astringent with the bitter flavours dominating. Water releases more unpleasant aromas (in my nose, only) of brackish water but it reduces the bitterness in both taste and finish somewhat. I like this dram best a little reduced to about 40% abv.

That comes very close to the perfect whisky. The whisky is perfectly balanced. Age, freshness, Brennereicharakter, barrel influence. Orange, leather, tobacco and old wood. Long finish. Point deduction is only for the price. The whisky is currently a bit overpriced with currently 150 €.

Very well matured, balanced sherry whisky with minimal smoke and lots of sea, alongside traces of the 18 years with oak and pleasantly discreet, never bitter spice. Simply grandiose, complex and very varied - unfortunately it has become a little too expensive

    A complex 18 year. Lovely.
    • Nose
Lovely: honey-nuts, a sea-breeze, followed with rich toffee and aromas from oaky leder.
    • Taste
Easy taste: with sherry and nuts and a whiff of natural  oaky wood.
    • Finish
Aftertaste: Dry, mixed  with a potpourri of herbs and spiciness going to a salty sherry finish.

unexpectedly strong alcohol.. pine wood and grapes.. smoky, fat sherry notes.. salty, maritime.. nuts and figs.. very slightly floral by the end
    • Taste
      86 86
dirty engine oil.. dry, but oily and coating.. not very complex, but surprisingly powerful.. alcohol rather civilized.. pepper and chilly.. bitter tree bark.. water reduces bitterness, but dumbs down the whisky
    • Finish
      84 84
long, astringent and on the bitter side..

A bottle I’ve always loved, but this is my first go at the new livery. I’m about half way through this new bottle and it has opened up nicely.

Nose - evocative and stunning. There is the obvious sherry notes, sea spray/coastal feel, aged oak, slight vinegar. I could spend a long time just sitting and teasing out the nose, it’s that good.
Palette - First velvety than sharp and peppery, some sweetness, dried fruit, oily
Finish - Medium-long, dry, tangy pepper carries through.

This is a really great Islay dram and a big step up from the standard 12, which is a very good dram. However, this is a case where you will very easily see the step up in quality when you spend the extra coin on this one. The strength of the delivery of sherry and well aged oak really makes me feel there must be some juice in here well beyond the 18 year age statement. Has to be one of the best OB 18s out there right now.

Unfortunately nice. From the nose to the very long-lasting finish, this is a harmonious experience. The different flavors and tastes are beautifully interwoven. I can hardly find a point of criticism here today. A really great moment of pleasure. If the glass were unfortunately not already empty, I would still smell and sniff ...
    • Nose
      91 91
At the first sniff, a rush of ripe orange and mandarin scents comes immediately towards you. Juicy fruits. Behind it, the oak tree easily wakes up with something like a subliminal smoke, but really only very, very subtle. The nose changes from minute to minute. Now I'm on a flower meadow with haggling. Honey is added. After some time in the glass, the fruit turns from orange to darker sherry aromas and the beautiful acidity of the juicy orange takes on a little salty character. As if the orange trees were standing directly on the pebble beach and the spray from the sea was slowly blowing past. I have rarely had such a calm, harmonious, creamy nose. Very cool.
    • Taste
      90 90
Creamy full mouthfeel. Immediately a great fruit in the mouth, there is also sweetness. The orange is there immediately, rather less sherry. Then you can quickly find a tasty aromatic spiciness that comes from the oak. Old leather and tobacco are now added to the mouth as a taste nuance. The longer the malt gets air, the more fruity it becomes in the mouth. The alcohol is very well integrated. The 46.3% are perfectly matched.
    • Finish
      90 90
Very warm in the throat down to the stomach. The very nice aroma of the oak stays in the mouth for a long time. Something like light smoke also lingers. But absolutely no bitter note. No coffee or chocolate. Only oak and the tobacco note remain for a long time.

Very rich, very tasty sherry, with a hint of iodine. Black cherry, varnished wood, applesauce, lightly salted caramel, very ripe quetsches. A little damp earth, blackberry liqueur, with winey reflections, and an ounce of very fine smoke. Smoke coming from a gas lighter, with a slightly metallic side. It is definitely very fruity, with juicy pear, mirabelle plum, apricot, some exotic fruits, mango, papaya, passion fruit. Date and a little chocolate. Orange marmalade.
In the mouth, the wood and the leather stand out, with a waxed, very smooth side, and dried fruits, rather apricots and grapes, almonds, very little spices, then the earth, dark chocolate, cherry and blackcurrant. Very long finish, a bit of charcoal and caramel, dried fruits in retro-olfaction. A shovel of very dark humus, the one found in the forest. Quite dry at the end, it reminds of hazelnut.
