    A whisky to my taste!

    --- blind tasting ---
    • Nose

Sweet and heavy. Overripe fruits, slightly acidic, sticky honey and sweet pastries with a nice spice. Over time, it becomes vinous. In any case, I like it very much.
    • Taste
      89 89
Strong start, sparkling alcohol, very sweet, maybe a slight smoke note? exciting! Dusty wood, dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      87 87
Quite long, subtly bitter, coffee powder, walnut, citrus peel, waxy notes.

a terrific Hazelburn, extremely charged, super fruity yet typical Campbeltown
    • Nose
      92 92
in the nose really powerful and intense, a heavy sweetness, overripe fruits like plums, pears, red grapes, apples, a variety of citrus fruits and wild berries. Behind it are notes of dark honey, toasted almonds, furniture polish and a complex cargo of spices, a subtle acidity and at the end a light sea breeze
    • Taste
      89 89
heavy, waxy, buttery, full-bodied, dark, complex reminiscent of kumquat, dried apricots, baked apples, cardamom, shortbread, espresso and salted peanuts
    • Finish
      90 90
long, fruity, mineral, a delicate oak remains

    N: It’s winey & grape-y for sure.
T: Saunternes-led, the spirit again lost to the cask.
F: A touch smoky then barley husky clean.
C: I bet this is super popular given the bold cask. Not for me.

The influence of the Sauternes barrel is most noticeable here in the light fruits. The nose is well balanced between sweetness, fruit, oiliness and smoke, but I like the combination in taste and the creamy mouthfeel even better.
    • Nose
      84 84
Thick, tough drops run down the glass wall from a beautiful zipper edge on the edge of the glass. They exude flavors of melted caramel, canned tangerines, ginger jam on black bread, cheddar cheese and suede. Then a slight hint of sulfur from a burned match, with iodine ointment, sulphurized apricots and peaches and a reminder of cold smoked eel, a few rose petals and beeswax, is becoming increasingly prevalent.
    • Taste
      88 88
The oily sweetness between caramel, cheddar, smoked eel, matchstick and cinnamon also occupies the mouth. At first, the almost 56 percent by volume are barely noticeable for the sheer chocolate and nutty creaminess, like chocolate pralines with apricots in cognac.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is also heavy, chocolatey and cinnamon, a few mandarins, almonds and a bit of malt combine in the aftertaste of cocoa with amaretto.

Sumptuous Hazelburn, especially on the nose. It's wild and grotesque for a Hazelburn, that's why it's divisive?!
    • Nose
      89 89
Huge fruit basket, marzipan, punch, honey and spicy oak.
    • Taste
      89 89
Powerful and oily. Peat, citruses, yellow fruits, salted caramel, matured oak, honey, pina colada and pepper.
    • Finish
      88 88
      Long, fruity, peaty.

2019. 08. 20 - This one is actually representing the characteristics of sauternes greatly. The slight residual peatiness contributes in a very singular way, that I am sure confuses a lot of people.
But for me, it makes it a very unique experience. The fruits are mainly the white and yellow fruits, peaches, pears, mangos, but on the ripened side.

Today seems like a good day to visit this one. Wine influenced whiskies I have found for me to be hit and miss. Let's see how it tastes.

After some time, I try this again today (October 8, 2019) and find the finish has that Springbank distillery feel to it that I didn't get when I first wrote this note. More smoke and some farminess on the backend of the finish that did't appear before. Though I think rating should remain the same.

The nose starts out nicely enough with wine grapes and aromas of a fall harvest in my local wine region. Becomes salty and lightly farmy with time. Some wet stones and chalk as well.

The palate is immediately oily followed by a subtle ice wine sweetness. Some smoke appears briefly with a welcome touch of warmth. Salty, then tart wine gums.

Finish continues from the palate with smoke, salt, some warming spices with a fading oily feel and a slight note of extra dry wine.
