Springbank 1950-1978/1996 Solera Thompson Bros 54.7%

This bottle is vatting from Springbank Vintage 1950-1978 into a firkin. Springbank 1950 is filled first from the Eaglesome of Campbeltown. Then topped up different Springbank bottles from vintage 1958-1978.

That is not common nowadays as there are only a few bottles from Thompson Bros. So they normally serve it in Dornoch Castle Bar. Very impressive to see this " Special Vatting". Not only Springbank, I tried Glenlivet Solera before and it was impressive for its sherry influence and complexity.

Nose: Roasted nuts, leather, bonfire , sherry fruitiness like cognac

Mouth: Mineral, smoky, tobacco, roasted nuts, sherry fruitiness like cognac, coffee, earthy, bonfire, Peat at the end

Not drink much Springbank but the sherry cask influence is really brilliant. I was struggling that is cognac cask or sherry cask for a while as the taste of fruitiness is a bit smilar to cognac.

Nose: Oak, light peat, plum jam, very pleasant to taste jam.
Taste: Beautifully arranged sweetness with the addition of peat entangling. Everything is so consistent with each other.Very very good it! Very dessert in reception. Strong flavor. Really wow.
Rating 93 | 100 A long finish with a sweet profile, where it does not warm with light peat. Really one of the best Springbanks I've tried! I am glad that I could try this bottle :).

Totally do not understand the ratings below 90 points.

Just a fantastic Springbank. Rich, dense, multi-layered.

The aromas are so addictive that you want to fall through, fall into this glass. The velvety smell of candied cherries, cherry dessert, plum jam, leather, varnish, autumn foliage.

The same rich and multi-faceted taste of sweet desserts, which are poured with all possible dark jams.
    • Finish

The aftertaste is rich, sweet, and dry. I don't even want to try anything else. But we have a whole set of old Springbanks.

On of the nicest SBs I've had the pleasure of trying and sharing. The depth of flavour's was just incredible, the story is beautiful and waves of different sensations too. A whisky (if they exist) that you could simply nose all night. Alas only available on O&R or visits to the Dornoch Castle Bar. A full bottle shared on IAAS so that 25 people could sample this piece of whisky history. Much more eloquent tasting notes from Ben Cops and David Bennett on their own sites......

I can't believe that some people on this site have rated this whisky below a 90. I will remember those names when I rely upon WB ratings in the future. If I see any of those names, then I will not take their ratings seriously.

This is a rather interesting discovery, the quality is very very high
    • Nose
It's old, but taste very similar to a springbank nowadays, waxy, dirty tyres, campfire smoke.
    • Taste
Very sweet and waxy, oily, extremely fresh, sour apple and barley, fresh herbs
    • Finish
      Long, sweet
