EN:
The Green Thistle 100° of 1995 shows thin legs running swiftly down, back towards the dark shadowy copper at the bottom of the glass. A deep, warming sherry sweetness of an intensive rum raisin chocolate bar with high cocoa content, creamy crême brulée, and the fried honeyed banana from next doors Asian restaurant team up with lime as well as grapefruit, oranges and a few cherries. Deep red roses and walnuts are slowly condensing down to ginger, iodine and the smell of a plaster strip newly torn off the foil. Together with strong scents of oak wood, these spicy smells tickle the nose just like an old wooden panelling, with a slightly bitter hint of tea leaves, malty black bread and warm baked plums in a wooden bowl.

Beim Green Thistle 100° von 1995 rinnen dünne Spinnenbeine zügig zurück hinunter ins schattige, dunkle Kupfer im Glas. Eine tiefe, warme Sherry-Süße einer kräftigen Rum-Rosinen-Schokolade mit hohem Kakaoanteil, sahnige Creme Brulee und die Honigbanane vom Asia-Restaurant treffen auf Limette und dazu Grapefruit, Orangen und ein paar Kirschen. Tiefrote Rosen und Walnüsse konzentrieren sich in Ingwer, Jod und dem Geruch frischer Pflaster. Gemeinsam mit kräftigem Eichenholz kitzeln diese würzigen Töne pfeffrig wie eine alte Wandvertäfelung in der Nase, mit einem herben Anklang an Teeblätter, malzigem Schwarzbrot und warmem Pflaumenkompott in einer Holzschale.

Taste

EN:
On the palate, a quite distinct dryness makes its round, mainly noticeable at the edges of the tongue, but not all biting or astringent and only slightly woody, rather like a strong, creamy dark chocolate mousse. The rum raisins are here rather transformed into raisins and hazelnuts, dried rose petals, tobacco, berries and rosemary. These tones lead over into old leather, licorice, lime, brought together again in this clearly recognizable maritime taste, the iodine and salt, like an old groyne’s head covered with mussels in the morning sunshine – but rather viewed from a distance and the smell carried by a light breeze than standing amidst the wet, tarred poles, as sometimes seems to be the case with other, predominantly Islay single malts.

Am Gaumen macht eine deutlich wahrnehmbare Trockenheit die Runde, am deutlichsten an den Rändern der Zunge, aber insgesamt dennoch nicht beißend oder zusammenziehend und kaum holzig, eher wie eine kräftig-cremige dunkle Schokoladenmousse. Die Rum-Rosinen sind nun eher zu dunkler Trauben-Nuss gewandelt, getrocknete Rosenblätter, Tabak, Beeren und Rosmarin. Die Eindrücke münden in altes Leder, Lakritz, Limetten, gemeinsam wieder das erkennbare Maritime, das Jod und Salz, wie ein alter, mit Muscheln übersäter Buhnenpfahl im Sonnenschein – allerdings aus einiger Distanz betrachtet und im sanften Wind wahrgenommen, anders als bei vielen Islays, bei denen man den Eindruck hat, direkt zwischen den nassen, geteerten, alten Pfählen zu stehen.

Finish

The finish then shoves earthy and peppery flavours down the throat, filling it with honey, grapes, berries and raisin sweetness at the same time, which, duly balanced by some coal from a burned-out cask, lingers on and on and on…

As a "Tale of Two Brothers" I tasted the Green Thistle head-to-head against the Batch 14 of the Springbank 12 CS of 2017 - Conclusion:  While one (12CS) is enjoying his breakfast with fruit and honey sitting in the dunes next to the cooled embers of the fire, dressing the cut on his finger from serving last evening‘s roast, his older brother (100proof) is already out walking on the beach with a bowl of warm baked plums and dark chocolate crumbles among the groynes, contemplating the plaster on his thumb…

Als "Zwei ungleiche Brüder" habe ich den Green Thistle Kopf-an-Kopf mit dem Batch 15 des Springbank 12 CS von 2017 verkostet. Das Fazit: Während der eine (12CS) neben den Resten des Lagerfeuers sein Frühstück genießt und den Schnitt an seinem Finger frisch verbindet, ist sein älterer Bruder (100proof) mit einer Schüssel Pflaumenkompott und Schokolade schon zwischen den Buhnen am Strand unterwegs und betrachtet nachdenklich das Pflaster an seinem Daumen…

[March, 2005]  I had another dram during a MaRa rarities tasting at Limburg.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 95.  My notes state it is a fat and wood driven profile that is very delicious.  Most probably it contains casks much older than 12 years (around 20 to 25 years).

There are several different batches of this release.

There is no accounting for taste...

[November, 1999]  I had this dram during a Springbank rarities tasting at Kyrburg. 

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this dram 92,5.  My notes state a very dark colour and an intense sherry taste both in the nose and on the palate.  The finish is of medium length.  Some drops of water improve the dram, but be careful:  With too much water it flattens quickly...

There is no accounting for taste...

Dried fruits again, nice oak wood notes, hot and oily, just a subtle sweetness, coffee, plums and a touch of citrus fruits

Warm and long, smooth and nice burning

Definitely an upper level Springbank, the nose is great and on the palate it is hot and punchy. Really good stuff!

Springbank 12 yo 100 proof (50%, OB, European version, early 90’s) 1star2c.jpg1star2c.jpg1star2c.jpg1star2c.jpg1star2c.jpg This one is neither the 100 proof US version at 50%, nor the UK/European version at 57% vol. Colour: like some liquid caramel. Nose: wow, stunning again! Bold, compact and voluptuous, starting with some eucalyptus, turpentine and mango, developing on pine needles, natural mastic and wax polish. It goes on with some dried fruits like apricot and coconut… Magnificent! Mouth: very creamy and very complex, with lots of crystallised orange and apricot pie, together with some vanilla stick and caramel. Not as complex ass the nose but still very demonstrative. An all-time hit, just a little simpler than the fantabulous versions from the 60’s and the 70’s. 93 points. PS: History says this one was diluted with old, underproof malt instead of water. Cool idea!
