[December, 2018] This is another dram out of this year's advent calendar from Cadenhead - which is a good overview of their 2018 releases and I always appreciate the opportunity to do such a samples tasting around christmas time.

What an interesting experience! The nose is young and immature and simply to forget but the taste is one of the saltiest I ever encountered and this is in a fine balance with hot spices (peppers, chili, ginger) and sweet sugars. It is quite simple but impressive and a great opportunity to experience saltiness in whiskies. Scientists never ever found any trace of NaCl (salt) in any whisky but once you tasted this dram you will not believe their results...

The colour is white wine and the nose offers an immature grassy-mashy profile (as if you sniff in an almost finished washback). This is way too young to be enjoyable to my olfactory cells - no, I proceed straight to the taste...

...that is much better but still quite simple on barley sugars, some fruits and a lot of spices. Actually, there is an unusual strong salty note what I really like - a perfect example to experience saltiness in a dram (if you have not yet) and it is easy-to-sip, too. An interesting taste that is both young and impressive. The flavours trinity of sweet sugars, hot spices and a fair shot of salt works on my taste buds...

The initial mouthfeel is warming and nicely coating with a minor peppery feeling (due to the high abv). The finish is long and adds a nice white chocolatey flavour (the sugars team up to create this) that is delicious. No distracting moments here (if you take the strong peppers and chili notes as part of the taste). Water turns the whisky sweeter and a little more immature as it destroys the nice balance of the flavours trinity. I clearly prefer this dram neat and untamed.

Pears and traces of lemon yogurt on the nose are accompanied by a salty taste and a peppery finish. Unusual.

Exciting Old Pulteney bottling that is worth the money!

Bourbon bottling that I love. Great sweet plums and apricot notes that remind of a class Balvenie.

Here too, fruit aromas combined with sweet barley notes and the whole thing with an interesting, salty background.

Medium length. Unfortunately, the sweet notes turn into somewhat bitter tannins.

    Highlander cream?
    • Nose
Very buttery, pineapple notes, lemon drizzle cake.
    • Taste
Poached pears, grapes, mild chilli sauce.
    • Finish

Really maritime as the Old Pulteney claims to be - very good
    • Nose
Sea breeze, iodine, hints of vanilla, creme brulee, whiffs of smoked fish, yellow fruits, quinces
    • Taste
Fresh, punchy, oily, creamy, citrus fruits, more lemony, salty butter, cookies
    • Finish
      Long, warm, salty

Citrus fruits, creme brulee, hints of vanilla - very good - need to taste again with detailed notes
