[March, 2018]  The new yearly bottling of this 25-years old Caol Ila has just been released, quite early in the year.  It was bottled on February 21th and I paid 96 Euro for one bottle (what a bargain!).  But now I am curious about it:  Is it as good as last year's release or even better?  To verify this I do a head-to-head tasting versus the 2017 (WB id 103198) and 2016 (WB id 80803) edition.

Another very fine release of my adored 25-years Caol Ila still with an unbeatable price these days.  Finally I like the 2017 edition best but this 2018 is not far away from that - it offers more fruity-sweet and a little less herbal flavours (so it all depends on your personal preference).  But all these drams are excellent and (given you like this profile) probably the best bang for your bucks...

[December, 2019] I had this dram during a private vertical Caol Ila tasting session and fully confirm my old review and solid 90+points score.

The colour is almost the same at old gold but it is adjusted using caramel (as usual with Diageo's standard releases). The texture shows slow legs and late fat tears, basically the same as the other two releases. The nose offers this typical complex profile of old Caol Ila: fruits, peat, barley sugars, herbs and spicy wooden aromas in a fine balance. This 2018 is more fruitier than the previous two releases what I like. The 2017 offers significant more herbal aromas as does the 2016 edition but the ripe fruits of the 2018 are great, too. Still I like the 2017 best closely followed by the 2018 and with some distance the 2016.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is nicely layered mainly on sweet and peaty flavours with lesser herbal impressions than the previous releases but some fine spices and honeys that pop up after a while. The 2017 owns more herbal notes as does the 2016 that is a little bit more peaty than the other two. Again I like the 2017 best closely followed by the new 2018 and 2016 that are different in their taste but on par point-wise.
    • Finish
      90 90
The 2018 arrives warming and coating in the mouth with no distracting moments at all. The mouthfeel of the 2017 is basically the same whereas the 2016 is a little bit weaker (one point). The finish of the 2018 is of medium length and adds more herbal aromas to the party. No distracting moments again (like bitter or astringent notes). The 2016 has a finish of comparable length while the 2017's finish is longer and somewhat more impressive than the other two (still they are great, no doubt!). Water is not needed, this dram is perfect when neat (of course as Diageo diluted the batch to 43% abv already).

I bought it somewhere for just under 100 EUR. Viewed from this top PLV, it wasn't far to test this malt as well. Now I'm happy to have 2 of them left. House whisky.
    • Nose
The nose is a dream. A campfire by the sea with sweet fruits and leathery, soft smoke. Light apples as well as spicy dark herb peat. Christmas ingredients like nuts and clementines in a dusty, musty leather bag. Is there some thyme in the background? Very very fine.
    • Taste
Unfortunately, the palate does not keep what the nose promises. But wonderfully oily and creamy, it hits the oral cavity. Now more towards a wood campfire and bitter coffee notes. Salty dried fruits in the middle part and the sour apple with it. It's okay, but not as good as expected. Still top level.
    • Finish
Medium to short but with a soft finish, these dried fruits with drying oak and spicy wood notes. Some citrus notes with sweet peat and again the sea breeze. Very pleasantly mild and soft, it always tempts you to refill. Great malt.

Gentle, old and dignified ... This Caol Ila exudes an incredible calm and serenity, its old character is always infused with this incredibly refreshing herbal note and it is precisely this interplay that makes this 25-year-old Caol Ila a taste experience! Tastes good and convinces!

Amber shines in the glass, on the glass wall of my Premium Snifter thick and oily "legs" pull their endless paths back into the glass. Caramel and hazelnuts rise heavily, dark peat with a minimal smoky note dissolves from dried yellow fruits, dried herbs play with old wood, sugar and a hint of vanilla, the old Caol Ila caresses the nose softly ... The alcohol is wonderfully harmonious involved, I'm looking forward to the first sip!
    • Taste
The first sip flows softly and slightly wooden through the mouth. A subtle peat note with greasy smoke moves voluminously through the palate, fresh meadow herbs with a few crumbs of hard caramel dissolve from cozy warmth, wall honey ends slightly resinous on the palate, the mouthfeel is surprisingly refreshing with floral notes. Another sip gently flows over the tongue, gradually mild pepper initially intensifies on the tongue and massages the tip of the tongue. Old, spicy wood sticks to the inside of the cheeks, mint and meadow herbs detach from the earthy and minimally smoky note of peat, the mouthfeel is characterized by voluminous freshness, the flow of saliva is slowly stimulated ...
    • Finish
Mint and herbs refresh the palate, a pinch of pepper still sticks to the tongue, hazelnuts swim in the excited saliva under the tongue, caramel and a touch of milk chocolate stick to the palate. The aftertaste remains in my memory for a long time and leaves a satisfied grin on my face ...

Nose: Complex, strong, and expressive beyond 43% of expectations (even in winter). Here, I can feel the breath of ancient Caol ila, metal feeling, a lot of herbal oil, and mysterious green plants. Such Caol ila is always good for me. It is an inexplicable attraction, oil-rich nuts, such as pine nuts and batam wood, fine smoke, clean dried fish. If I time every glass of whisky I sniff, this glass will definitely make it into the rankings.

Drink: The wine is full-bodied, and the nutty flavor rich in fat is more obvious in the mouth. Metal, waxy, and charcoal smoke are released in the final rhyme, bringing out the wonderful combination of honey and lemon peel.

Overall: Single and changeable, warm and cold, durable and easy to drink.

Very rounded with time, with typical tropical fruits, salty air, very easy to drink, nothing ostentatious, simply good, inhabited woody notes can be seen

    A bomb for less than 100 €!

Unfortunately now too expensive. But I'm glad I had a bottle.

Cool smoke between a campfire and a slight medicinal note. A full load of citrus fruits. It's a great mix. Looks very settled and mature. Burnt orange peel. Wort logs on. Ex-Bourbon notes can also be seen in the background.
    • Taste

It'll be really good in the mouth. Sweet, smoke, ripe lemon, roasted almond. Then spices and a peppery note take care of it. Vanilla. Fat and oily. A wonderful mouthfeel!

Nice long, warm finish. Sweet vanilla and a slight bitter spice remain.
