Actually, I think these are exactly the same impressions I remember from the warehouse tasting last year. This is my kind of preferred dram - complex, distillate-driven, balanced and layered, flawless and lingering… I have to go to Campbeltown to check if there is something left of this excellent cask, after all!
The colour is old gold and the texture shows a few fat tears with slow legs (a rich oiliness that is fine!). The nose offers the same excellent fruity-honey-spicy profile that I remember from the warehouse tasting. It is hard to say if anything changed but it is at least as good as it was in Campbeltown. Complex and perfectly balanced AND old-stylish distillate-driven with the wooden aromas provide a sound support but do not dominate like in so many modern whiskies.
The taste is multi-layered on many fruits, honeys, spices and some herbs in a firm wooden framework that provides a perfect structure to arrange all the different flavours. In later layers beautiful barley sugars pop up together with white chocolate and ginger flavours. Excellent. Water releases some more aromas and flavours and turns the dram smoother but actually I like the neat dram better (it is perfect as it is).
The initial mouthfeel is warming and instantly coating (creamy) without distracting moments, truly excellent and again old-stylish (that means there are no tannins-driven bitter or astringent moments). The finish keeps the promise of the texture and is long and lingering with a very minor drying ending (that is not unpleasant at all). Like so often the spices are more visible here what is a perfect contrast to the initial rather sweeter taste. No flaw or off-note that I can detect.
