[November, 2017]  I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting "Through the decades - 1930's to 2000's".  I bought this bottle no. 43 for 80 Euro in October, 2006.  This was a kind of dirty trick when I served this bottle as the last in a blind tasting set-up with such outstanding stuff like a 45-year old Linkwood from 1938.  Practically, all FoSM club members should know this dram as this was our second club bottling from 2006.  But surprisingly no one actually recognised it and to make it even more shameful:  No one guessed the right decade (seventies) of this dram either!  ...a good example of how your taste buds can fool you in a certain line-up!

The colour is burnished and the texture shows many small tears that slowly consolidate and very, very late build slow moving legs.  The nose is quite punchy (61,1% abv) but after the olfactory cells adapted to this it offers a fine herbal sherry profile with lots of different aromas (e.g., chocolate, cardamom, floor wax, modelling clay, OBFs like aceton).  But it cries for water, certainly!  It arrives on the palate hot and peppery (no wonder at that high abv) with an interesting salty feeling.  The taste is very complex on a herbal and fruity (all kinds of different berries) profile with caramel, vanilla, green peppers and again hints of salt.  The finish is long, sticky and somewhat gravelly.

After adding some water this dram nicely opens up both in the nose and on the palate - and it really gets great when reduced to about 46% abv (so a fair share of water is needed).  All of a sudden the aromas and flavours explode and form an adorable complex yet balanced profile.  It is more sherry-driven with different chocolate flavours (both milk and dark chocolates), more fruits (oranges) and spices (ginger).  The finish stays even longer without any distracting moments, really nice!

I guess, if the FoSM club members had added water to this dram (what obviously almost nobody did) their chances woud have been much higher to spare the blushes of not recognising their best own bottling (so far).  That is why one should always try a rather shy dram reduced, too...
