    1471) Bowmore, 15YO, Darkest

A discontinued batch of 15YO Bowmore that tasted years ago (79pt). Pleasantly surprise when found this last bottle standing quietly at the back of one of the cabinet.
    • Nose
N- Rubber tube with distant bonfire smokes, nutmeg syrup with brine-y rocks and minerals. Gushes of maritime smokes before some floral, chocolate and brown sugar developed. (86/20)
    • Taste
P- It has this sort of feather light 'neutral' texture, but well filled with nutmeg, spices and dried fruits. Sourish lime peels with smokes at retro-hale. Sweet, bitter and naturally dry with some astringency. (85/19)
    • Finish
F- Medium, does improve at subsequent sips with tart berries, dried fruit, green tea white chocolate and gentle brine smokes emerged. (86/20)

      B/B- 86/20

By far the best bowmore I've ever had in a glass. Stunningly beautiful on the nose with the perfectly balanced combination of smoke, old-fashioned sherry and spices, complemented by a warehouse feeling. A little too little ABV on the palate, but at least 43% and not 40. In the finish, a nice mouthfeel of dried fruit and oak, also slightly mineral. In cask strength that would be a high-end whisky.

Unfortunately, Bowmore 15 is both chill-filtered and caramel colored. I have a hard time letting caramel coloring pass when a whisky is NAMED for its color. For shame, Bowmore! OK, now I can focus on the flavor.

Peat or gently sweet, fruity sherry. This is the opposite of both of those aspects. The sherry is resinous and funky, the peat muddy and vegetative. The combination is alchemical, though, with an otherworldly fungalness… fungitude… fungality… funkiness that brings together the most edgy, concentrated, and dark flavors of both peat and sherry and becomes something greater than the parts. While not really an education in peat, or in sherry, it is an education in Darkest.
