For a 16 old 40% whiskey, the first acquaintance is surprisingly sharp (spicy). A few drops of water makes the taste more obvious and a clear taste of wood rings through with sweet tones of marsala wine. The aftertaste remains sharp, combined with a sweet taste of fruit and a palet of spices. All in all, a fine whiskey for the 65 euro I've paid.

Call me crazy, but I believe I like this a bit better than the 21-year-old Madeira Finish.

Woody indeed, but nicely so. Very deep and winey without seeming too "wet", i.e. drowned-out by the wine remnants left in the casks. The distillate can still be felt, with its fruits and honeys. Rich and oily, which is a real surprise at the minimum strength. Pleasantly spicy as well, with aromas of speculoos / stollen / Christmas cake, a soft glue note, and baked apple. Great cask management, and expertly blended. Love this nose.

Fruity-winey attack, then more and more spices and tropical fruit notes. Cinnamon sticks, ginger cookies, some umami. Raspberry, cherry, cookie dough, maple syrup, preserved fruits. Really good, and the low strength doesn't seem to hold it back very much. The spiciness makes it seem at least like 43 percent. Just don't drink anything bottled at a higher strength before this one. ;)

The exuberant fruitiness keeps any tannic astringency (associations of oversteeped tea) that usually appear at 40% in check, which is good news. A soft mustiness from the port casks, lost of red fruits, and an earthy / dunnage aspect.

Very easy to drink. Would be my go-to choice for a big company.
Spicy, oaky and dry. Very light and airy, with a little bit of fruit in the back.
    Finish is almost non-existent.

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Few of all - the motto of this whiskey, few derivatives, little brightness, expression, volume, depth; feeling of empty space, empty space; of the pluses - very smooth, drinkable.
    • Nose
Closed, dry, woody notes, light shades of dry herbs, animal motifs, some mineral tones.
    • Taste
Soft, enveloping, oak, light notes of damp cardboard, furniture varnish, raisins, bark bitterness, ginger, burnt caramel.
    • Finish
Light, invigorating, oak, varnish, a little dry herbs, ginger.

    • Nose
Restrained, soft, somewhat slender, although very pleasant. Vanilla, floral notes, red apple, passion fruit, multifruit juice, plum jam, sweet pastries, malt motifs, hay, wood sawdust. 22
    • Taste
Light-bodied, moderately sweet. Malt, black pepper, water with sugar, woody notes, fruit candies, mineral water, alcoholic and herbal bitterness. 20
    • Finish
Between short and medium, with woody notes, herbal bitterness and a hint of menthol. 20
Light, strong, round, not very complex whiskey, as for me, not very different from their dozens. Balance 21

    • Taste
Sweet, fruity, menthol notes, fruit bubblegum, strawberry jam
    • Finish
Medium-long, slowly getting dry, fruity, grass notes, walnuts, light oak

a 16 year old, typically Irish SM!
    • Nose
sweetness spicy, peppery, a little on Madeira wine
    • Taste
wood, malt, maderised scents, wine also cooked somewhere, all sparingly
no singularity, but a mixture of scents all in their places, for a moment strong
    • Finish
medium, but on the same aromas and sweetness that extends, important woody glass bottom
