Whisky Reviews for Glenfarclas 2002

16 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.94 points

A Glenfarclas Family Cask, that's all I have to say. As always, a FC is a taste experience, although I must admit that in this Cask rather the tart and subtly bitter oak flavors are in the foreground and practice the fruit flavors in restraint. Especially impressive, however, is the sweet and creamy chocolate note in combination with hazelnuts, simply delicious.
    • Nose
Radiantly clear and wonderfully amber, the Glenfarclas shines in the glass, long drops stick to the glass wall and flow slowly and oily back into the glass. Dark sherry aroma in combination with tart oak tones rises powerfully from the premium snifter, dried raisins mix with creamy milk chocolate and a touch of cinnamon to a beguiling nose, tart oak aroma is subtly in the background. Dates, vineyard peaches and sour cherries rise from the sweet and creamy fruit note, the chocolate aroma and the austere oak notes become equally intense, resulting in a wonderful combination of sweetness and "tartness". Subtle leather and tobacco flavors come to mind, as well as velvety apricot and a hint of caramel and toffee. Sweet milk chocolate and a dash of ground hazelnuts mix with the fruity aromas and create a wonderful contrast to the austere oak tones.
    • Taste
Again, a combination of dark sherry aromas and rich oak tones dominates the first impression or the first sip. Creamy milk chocolate is soon whitewashed with hot and bitter espresso, sour cherries and hazelnuts flash before the full oak cargo lingers over the fruity echoes. Dark and spicy wood elements rest on the palate, on the tongue makes a subtle sharpness with a bitter and tart note noticeable. Short wet leather aromas and dried raisins, cherries and dark plums sparkle, the tart and bitter aromas gradually give way to the sweet and creamy fruit and nut flavor. With a creamy, full-bodied taste and a handful of nuts, the taste is transformed into the aftertaste.
    • Finish
The complete flavors of the taste are just as reflected in the aftertaste. Chocolate, hazelnuts, dark berries and dark espresso, cinnamon sour cherries and, of course, the bitter and slightly bitter oak flavors ;-) Long and powerful the echo gives off its dark and tart aroma, again and again show the creamy chocolate and the intense hazelnuts.

The thing is really delicious. Unusually - extraordinary. No more boring sherry bomb, but a really delicious nougat nut and oak dessert! A Glenfarclas Family Cask at a reasonable price.
Two disadvantages (for me): * Dangerously tasty. The dram, the bottle, does not last long. * Also tastes my wife: -o

Surprisingly little fruit notes, it looks more like a pastry chef than a distillery. A perfect "dessert", nose and taste harmonize nicely. A malt from the pastry shop.
    • Nose
Initially, some solvents, as is typical of fresh, strong oak influence. But not much. Then discreetly roasted hazelnuts, Manner waffle, Carlsbad wafers, Rumkugel with dark chocolate, sugar waffles from the fair, foam kiss with brittle, nougat brittle, hidden in the background Armagnac.
    • Taste
Strong and sweet. Tolerate some water, not too much! Syrup-like, dates and maple syrup, very old rum, dark chocolate, the roasted hazelnuts and the male waffle from the nose can be found again. Very mouth-filling, absorbs everything, mouthwash, becomes increasingly dry. Very little fruit, very much Nussigkeit, dryness and sweetness.
    • Finish
Medium long but tanninreich, furry-astringent, warming, a little peppery spiciness, very weak bitterness, it stays long sweet and tannin-fogged in mouth.

Once again a Glenfarclas the old school! Full and intense, but tasty and deep. Beautiful old oak flavors and the beautiful spicy europ. I notice oak immediately. Then come nuts and cherries ... Also particularly spicy, oily and intense espresso and dark chocolate notes in the mouth. European oak is irreplaceable !! The whisky is definitely a bit older than it is (or if you compare the standard today with the American barrels). With water, the malt fruity, but loses only a little of its strength! The price is absolutely good, I would not be surprised if the price was over 200. Clear purchase or collector's recommendation!

    A damn good cask.
    • Nose
Heavily sherried with a bit of burnt wood. Milk chocolate, toffee, vanilla, condensed milk. Does burn the nostrils a bit.
    • Taste
Not terribly complex, but does its thing well. Lots of spice - anise, licorice, and cinnamon. Dried apricots and green raisins. Chocolates as well. With water, it becomes less sherried, more smoky, with now there's maraschino cherry syrup.
    • Finish
A delicious, creamy caramel chocolate aftertaste.

  6. StyrianSpirit scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

This is an excellent dessert liqueur. In his way, this malt is already great and he also acts less "artificial" than the Glenrothes 1995 acts as a "liquid caramel candy" on me. For me personally, the plum and berry fruitiness of a 1998er-Family-Casks or the wonderful oak and coffee notes of the Old-School-1992ers are missing to the absolute bliss.
But it is once again an excellent, tasteful "Family Cask".
    • Nose
A liquid, dark nut nougat egg. Do not worry, it's already whisky, because the oak logs in the repeated tasting and the 57.6% provide a fresh breeze. Dark chocolate. The more often one dusts the malt, the sooner a few overripe plums appear on the horizon.
    • Taste
Full oily, nut and nougat are immediately dominant, the 57.6% give decent power. "Liquid Manner-Schnitten", this comparison of "FrankDrebin" hits it very well. Almost liqueur. Hazelnut cream, nougat, chocolate (not very dark, but also no sugar-sweet milk chocolate). The overripe plums from the nose, however, do not find their way to the palate.
    • Finish
The finale is medium in length. Also on the finish, the hazelnut-nougat-cut characteristics with soft oak impact does not change significantly.

Here you can see impressively, the high quality such a Family Cask can show. After all, this is only a 14-15 year old bottling. The result, however, is something to be proud of and puts some older standard bottling (even other brands ...) in the shade. So you get a taste of what you can expect in older Family Cask bottling (eg at the 1989 W17). A big movie theater!

This bottling shows once again how outstanding the Family Casks are in comparison to the Standard Range. Certainly a bit rough and uncouth in the taste, this Glenfarclas is characterized by its wonderful nose, the pronounced nut-brittle flavors and the beautiful finish.
    • Nose
      91 91
Sweet and voluminous sherry. However, on the yellow fruit side - juicy apricots, dried figs, grapes and dates, Mon Cheri, cognac, dusty and spicy oak, hazelnut, herbal notes. The alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
      88 88
Voluminous, slightly gingery, the alcohol pushes vigorously. Dark sherry but surprisingly little sweet, strong nut-brittle flavors, some oak, then bitter, fruit acid comes along - maybe the Mon Cheri Cherry -, dark chocolate and mocha.
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium-long and oily, marked by the nut-brittle flavors, baking cocoa lays furry over the tongue, nougat chocolate and a hint of mint. I like it very much!
