This is by no means a sherry bomb! You'll get the chocolate (the 50-60% one), mustiness, dryness, loads of honey, caramel, some dried fruits (think raisins/figs/dates), but there is still enough room left for the malt/whisky itself. The sherry does not overpower. Overall, it is a little bit too sharp for me, but at least it takes water well. I am missing real depth here. It is a really good whisky (please don't get me wrong here), just simply isn't a great one. Something tells me that if this would have been left for 2 more years in the casks, it would have become a real beauty (approaching the 90+ rating for me). But hey, this is the problem with almost all NAS cask strength whiskies nowadays... The price around 70 Euros is fair and absolutely justified!

Nice, not too intense oloroso sherry notes. No sulphur, interesting earthy note (might not be to everyone's liking).
    • Taste
      87 87
Based on the nose, I have hoped for more sherry influence. It has enough complexity (honey, caramel, dried fruits, chocolate, some spices, etc.), just everything is too tamed down for my liking. Could have been left in the casks for a little bit longer...

      85 85
      Not bad, just not great!

    Straight. Intense sherry cask.

But unfortunately without real depth and therefore not to my liking.

But you don't have to expect this with a NAS.

    He does what he promises.
    • Nose
      84 84
Without the addition of water, very one-dimensional in the direction of the sherry cask. Adequate fruit and light spice. I don't find nuttiness and nothing from the oak either. Absolutely straight forward... But the alcohol is well integrated.
With water, a vanilla sweetness is added. Some toffee or light chocolate can still be found.
    • Taste
      85 85
Proper start. I attribute this to the cask strength and relatively young age. Spice can be felt but the berries dominate. The mouth tingles a little. Not particularly complex here either, but I don't expect that from this malt either. Even with water, not much changes here. He's going to be even spicier.
    • Finish
      84 84
The spicy tingle stays in the mouth for a relatively long time.

    B3> B2> B1
While B1 and B2 were very similar, B3 is a bit different, has more chocolate on the nose, alcohol seems to blend in better here. It is also oily on the tongue, which I did not notice in the previous ones, it also has less oranges, but there is also a clear caramel going on a drier side. Finish similar to B2
    • Nose
      87 87
chocolate, alcohol goes well with the whole, fruit cake, raisins, plums, sweet, some apples
    • Taste
      86 86
oily, sweet red fruit, chocolate, caramel, pepper, some nuts, wood
    • Finish
      86 86
medium - long, wood, pepper, dried fruit

  6. TomSawyer scored this whisky 86 points Newbie

A pleasant floral aroma caresses the tongue. You can feel a warm summer breeze blowing across a forest clearing, gradually absorbing the succulent aroma of the blueberry bushes that grow there. The whisky has nothing oily-dusty, but is more reminiscent of a bubbling spring that ripples lightly in the mouth and tastes a bit more fruity with every wave. Eventually the floral notes are gone altogether and a powerful heavy sweetness spreads, as if water had turned into wine. A veil of nut and vanilla settles on the mucous membrane of the cheeks and lingers for a long time. A hint of bitter almond mixes with this finish, pungent for a brief moment, then milder with a Christmassy marzipan association. In short, a very exciting whisky, which tastes a wide arc - from summer to the Advent season.

  7. Roland7 scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Dense, balanced, quite dry and autumnal! Duchesse, kissel, red apple, lollipop, barberry, redcurrant, watermelon, grapefruit, rose wine, strawberry, kiwi, green tea, cocoa, boiled condensed milk, custard, fallen leaves, mineral, burnt wood, smoke.

  8. The_Osprey scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

Tamdhu Batch Strength 3, 58.3%. Consumed Oct 2019. Aroma has dried apple, oak . Taste is sherry, pungent notes, some aniseed. Has picked up a good oily body and carries no heat considering the abv. It does taste a bit over-oaky in places though 3.3/79

  9. Don Cassi scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

OMG, what a nose, dark fruits, dates, fruit gums, slightly perfumed, a touch of cloves and cinnamon - one of those drams that you could sniff at all evening without drinking it.

Intense, slightly spicy, chocolaty with dried fruits. Maybe not quite as full as one would expect from the smell.

In the finish, a nice chocolate note with light fruit aromas. It's a shame, unfortunately no more cinnamon. Unfortunately, it loses a bit of complexity and intensity here.
    Length: 6/10

The nose is spectacular, then it breaks down a little, but that's complaining at a high level, great malt and a must for sherryheads!

Not a bad NAS Sherry CS in itself. For me, however, the sherry seems a bit artificial and youthful.
Over time in the glass it gets less and then I don't think it's bad at all. You can definitely enjoy it.

Yummy!!! A bit complex and in a great atmosphere, the nose, as if three-dimensional (intense sherry + tea, windy earthiness + sweet-perfume), the palette a bit short and somewhere there, unfortunately, but consistent on the nose, quickly turns into a long, nice finish. Tasty whisky !!!

Day 9 of Lockdown - 26th March - When going gets tough, the tough get going. Time flies, tasted the BS 001 and 002 back in 2017, @ time when there is no pandemic, no lockdown and everything are relatively rosy compared to current state.
    • Nose
N- This B3 leaning towards B002 style which are light and easy aroma despite the high abv. Coffee candy, spice, vanilla chocolate, caramelized citrus with some green tea off notes. (89/20)
    • Taste
P- Olorosso, buttery spicy with sweet maraschino building up generously, some anise, spices and herbs. Also leather, raisins and chocolate. Pretty much going on to cope with the spicy fore notes but superficial. (86/20)
    • Finish
F- Long, sticky, menthol, amaretto liqueur, adequately broad with the given strength but restrained on depth and not at its full potential. Decent but descended compared to 001 and 002. (86/20)

    Nice color.
Thin streaks on the glass reveal young age.

    He smells fruity.
    And after beautiful oak wood.
    Even some vanilla.
    The alcohol seems well integrated.
    There is nothing stinging.
Over time, it gets a bit spicier.

    Violent start, strong, creamy, woody.
A good mix of sherry and wood.
Maybe he can take a drop of water.

    Very good to drink.
    And for 50 € a bargain ...

  32. Pyromann scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Good whisky, despite all possible pitfalls is a distinctly sweet woody base and generally sweetness after sherry and chocolate. But I was surprised by the smell in which there are a lot of traces of some cooked porridge, grass and straw / chaff.
    • Nose
Sharper chocolate sweetness, chocolate candies, after a while straw, chaff, boiled malt or something similar, grass aroma. Cooked porridge.
    • Taste
Heavier, dense, oily. Sweetness, fresh apples, sweetness. Sharper, a bit pungent. After a while, sherry takes over the sweetness.
    • Finish
Again as strange as the smell - chaff, grass, straw. After a while more woodiness, sweetness after sherry.

      Proper full on sherry nose.
A little tough on the alc right away, but it either quiet down a bit after some time in the glass or my nose just got used to it.
      Raisins and fruitcake.
Not as much "raw" wood as in many other CS sherry casks.
A wee drop of water makes it sweeter and more approachable.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, rich, full body. Still not up to "nuclear" bomb level.
As with the first nosing, the first taste appears a bit tough, or maybe intense alc, but it softens along the way.
Sweet juicy red fruit, chocolate and concentrated caramel.
Again, very consistant with the nose regarding the wood, soft and tasty.
It handles a few drops of water quite well, the fruits opens up and spreads out some more. Becomes a little softer and more "likeable" without losing too much power.
      A candidate for exploration.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Quite long, sweet, spicy.

Spicy strong onset. Sherry comes out with the time back. The alcohol is palpable, but hiding behind the dry spice - reminiscent of Deanston Bordeaux somehow.
    • Taste

Even better than the nose, because wider. Again, alcohol noticeable, but very well integrated. Sherry more noticeable, marzipan, chocolate. Water makes him milder, but not necessarily better.

A very sweet sherry bomb with reasonable pricing. One thing I especially like about it is that the sherry doesn‘t overpower the single malt‘s characteristics - it doesn‘t taste like a sherry liqueur (as some sherry bombs tend to do).

A bit younger and hotter than batch 001 (however, the second batch was perhaps even more spirity). Still a very nice sherry nose, but the heat on the palate is a real downer. Sure, you can add water and thereby tone it down a notch, but in doing so, you likewise reduce the intensity of the (initially beautiful) aroma.

This is really the problem of current NAS cask strength bottlings: they promise to present the respective whisky in its purest form, but end up sacrificing substance for immediate impact. Such a shame, because if this were matured for another 5 years, I believe the end product would be not only significantly, but exponentially better.

With Glendronach, the NAS cask strength versions work much better, since the distillate has more character. With the lighter make Tamdhu produces, you get all the qualities of the sherry casks but little else. Not ideal in my book.

The 2004 Tamdhus from Van Wees were the first ones that opened my eyes to such young malts. This one has a similar profile but a bit less depth. It's definitely more fulll-bodied than batch 2.

This malt gets better, the longer it stays in the glass. With a little bit of water, Batch 003 will be wonderfully sweet again. This batch is rather on the "earthy" side compared to batch 002 and less on the "dark fruity" side, which announces itself only with a little bit of water. Ultimately, a matter of personal preference.
    • Nose
At the first Verriechen a baked apple note is present immediately. Herbs and dark earth are also more present than at Batch 002, the sherry with a few ripe plums announces later, a fresh alcohol breeze is also more noticeable. With a few drops of water is a very beautiful streaking. The malt is fruity, the spice (forest soil, marjoram) and some oak emerge, the baked apple notes recede into the background.
    • Taste
In the mouth, the Tamdhu comes again pleasantly sweet, now the plum roaster is present, the baked apples step into the background, the Sherry comes after. The thing tingles nicely, but never intrusive. The oak logs in as well. As with Batch 002, some water leads to an absolute twist towards plum sweetness, rhubarb compote, paired with oak aroma and herbs. As he reveals as the two-pack another face.
    • Finish
The finish becomes spicy - damp forest floor, some lovage, marjoram, oak. The sweetness fades away, parallel to the end of the spicy aromas. Also in the finish, a teaspoon of water leads to 2-3cl in the Premium Snifter to a sherry-fruity finish. A very pleasant variant.
