Arguably one of the greatest new entry level whiskies released this Century. Pound for pound (this can be purchased for less than £35 a bottle), there are very few malts that can best the level of quality offered by Benromach 10 year old. Balance, pronounced flavour and some old-school sensibilities. All-in-all, excellent.

    • Nose
Starting with toffee-coated apples, this moves swiftly through some slightly unusual aromas – Crayola crayons, engine oil and plasticine/putty – before settling in to some traditional heathery smoke. This is supported by chocolate and oats as well as highly umami egg noodles. Ashy embers and slightly salty coastal air reinforce both smoke and maritime (which, this actually isn’t, but there you go). Tingles of grapefruit and citrus keep things just on the right side of fresh and bright.
    • Taste
Nicely mouth-coating with an arrival that expresses an array of fruitiness – apples, peaches, oranges and that grapefruit tartness again. Smoke envelops the entire palate, but doesn’t take over entirely (like any good support act) – heathery, wispy, almost slightly Campbeltown with its sense of murky pungency. In the mid to back palate, additional flavours – baked goods, surface cleaner and a sprinkle of freshly cut garden herbs.
    • Finish
Medium to long and with more emphasis on sherried characteristics now – sugar dusted mix berries and just a hint of minerality.

Pear, peat smoke, apple, white grape and mint. That nice finish could have taken a little longer.

    Added Value

In 1993 independent bottler Gordon & Macphail took over the terrains, buildings and installations of Benromach, renovated for four years to modernize it so that all production could be handled by just one man and in 2004 they bottled their first single malt. We’ll try a classic, their bestseller Benromach 10 Year Old. Pat offered me a sample from a bottling of 25th May 2017. It had been ten years since I last tried it, imagine that!

Wonderfully layered nose on autumn leaves, cocoa powder, toffee apples, kiwi peel, dry oak and soft woodsmoke. There is even a salty edge and some smoldering hearth. This is very good and fresh at the same time with a very fruit note. But after a few moments it turns really interesting. I get some crayons, grapefruit and… putty. But in the sense that it becomes added value.

It’s god a good body, bittersweet arrival with lots of fruit, but the smokiness that ensues is simply sublime. Reminds me even a bit of Springbank, no joke! Freshly cut garden herbs go hand in hand with honey and beeswax, while a mild bitter note of ashes puts everything in perspective. Very good.

The finish is medium long and harmonious, but the emphasis now is clearly on the sherry casks in the mix. Nice minerality at the death.

This remains one of the most all round entry level malts. Only 40 EUR, so a no brainer. Take it home and enjoy! Thx, Pat.

The bottle has been open for a long time and in my opinion it has got better and better.
Despite only 43% alcohol strength, this is a strong companion. Great nose, which is unfortunately only partially reflected in the taste. In fact, I discovered the smoke that many noticed in empty glass.
    Overall, a very decent standard.

The use of sherry and bourbon barrels is reflected very harmoniously in the taste profile of this Benromachs. So the malt presents itself with sherry-typical fruit notes as well as with soft honey and dry wood flavors, which I would attribute to the Bourbon barrels. The subtle smoke completes the whisky in an elegant way, resulting in a nice standard with a pleasant price-performance ratio.
    • Nose
At first, soft aromas of lightly spicy forest honey, soft beeswax, sweet caramel, subtle cocoa powder and some dry oak flow elegantly, followed closely by a pleasant light fruitiness (apricots, orange peel, ripe kiwi). Behind it, after a short time, a very restrained earthy smoke can be seen.
    • Taste
The honey and the bright fruits are also on the tongue, making the first start very sweet. But the beeswax and a subtle and slightly bitter ash note characterize the taste.
    • Finish
The finish looks amazingly earthy and mineral. In addition, the smoke comes to the fore with aromas of charcoal and burned matches.

    • Nose
      84 84
Nose slightly smoky, charred, especially on the fruit (fresh apple, plum), some almonds, slightly mineral.
    • Taste
      85 85
Easy, clear, rather dry, always slightly charred, rather fine and melted, difficult to find precise aromas. Partly almonds, fresh plum, mineral ensemble. Well balanced. Vegetable traces at the end of the mouth.
    • Finish
      85 85
Spicy finish, 43% long, on pepper and wood. Always a little plum.
