All the cask finish with this one, little Auchentoshan to be found.
Perhaps the long finishing period was to make up for a poor cask. The off note holds on no matter how much time you give or how much water you add.
    • Nose
Monkey’s Blood, strawberry sauce that is (perhaps only Brits get this one). Big berry notes, raspberries, blackberries and brambles. Quite some tannings coming from the wine cask, perhaps even the faintest hint of smoke. Also an off note just lingering in there.
With water a toasted nuts note makes an appearance but in the downside the off note gains momentum.
    • Taste
Big and spicy arrival, a lot of power in this one. Haribo cherry sweets with a touch of marzipan. The off note is present in the palate, a lot more prominent than the nose, I would call it “cask stank”.
    • Finish
Dry with lots of tannings, someone left the teabag in the cup.
With water the finish softens and gains a little jello sweetness.

It is pretty powerful stuff but it remains a bit niche - the triple distilled Lowland has been blasted by this second maturation. I cannot see myself sitting down and enjoying more than one glass of this at a sitting. It is probably in the 'last dram of the night' category - it could even follow a peated whisky. With some water it seems to retain the tannic aspects but loses some of the richness, so perhaps best to simply savour close to full strength.

difficult to not think of red wine; it has that lovely vinous quality just bordering on balsamic vinegar; Seville oranges and brandy-soaked Christmas pudding
    • Taste

quite dry; definitely causes a bit of lip smacking like a tart Oloroso
    • Finish

medium->long; fruity and no surprise there is dryness, but it is not distracting; somewhat tannic - teabag left in way too long though although in this case, the wine-influenced wood is probably the culprit
