An extremely solid malt that comes across as impeccable. Everything harmonizes and gives a nice overall picture. Nothing stands out or dominates. Balanced and (at least I would say) wedded with care and the right hand.
    • Nose
Initially soft and 'creamy' with a playful reddish fruity note. Then the aroma quickly becomes stronger and delicately spicy. A great and very pleasant sour note joins the fruit. Some red berries, tart green apples, tangy tangerines are accompanied by a hint of caramel and cocoa. Very balanced and consistent. Slightly tangy, pleasantly sweet, in harmony with a delicately spicy touch. After a while there is still a fresh malt note and a little vanilla cream. Convinced already!
    • Taste
The malt is pleasantly spicy and slightly tart on the tongue. Then the playful fruity notes show up again, which are now accompanied by a pleasant honey sweetness. You also suspect a hint of citrus, which is then complemented by a nice, delicate tart wood note. Very soft, very balanced, the alcohol is well integrated. A harmony of spice and delicately sweet fruits. Simply a coherent overall package.
    • Finish
It is also soft and creamy in the finish. The honey is emphasized again, the fruits slowly fade and the whole thing then blurs into a tart, sweet (wood) note that lasts surprisingly long. The second sip a bit more spicy than the first. Optimal, just a nice finish.

I would argue this to be the best offering among the CB core range. The malt components com from about the same distilleries as the Oak Cross, but the casks used are significantly different. More on the richer side on pretty much every regards, but on the other side that also means waxiness is a bit more masked here. Not as clean tasting as well perhaps, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
    • Nose
Cooked apples, some spices, soft citrus, vanilla
    • Taste
Red fruits, malt syrup, oak, cocoa, slight waxiness, milk-like texture
    • Finish
Caramel, oak, cloves, peppers, cinnamon, average in length

Pulled pepper in taste, I love it very much, you can take it for a drink, but it will not bring any revelations.

    • Taste
Very good and powerful pepper, oak, some kind of vegetable notes, chubby radish, tannins.

    • Taste
Nutmeg, white pepper, clove, malty, toffee, light honey, the spiciness changes with the saliva more in sweetness, then in the dryness of oak chips, cinnamon, vllt. a few kitchen herbs

Didn't expect too much, positively surprised.
    • Nose
      Rich and delicious.

Must have been some high quality sherry casks involved.

Sweet, caramel, leather, ripe dark red berries, fresh red apple juice. A twist of citrus evolving.

All sprinkled with some crushed dry spice.
    • Taste
Quite some spicy bite, but not agressive.

      Oily feel.

      Espresso coffee, ginger, nutmeg.

A touch of blood orange and a slice of red apple.
    • Finish
      Warming with gentle pepper.

Coffee turning a little bitter, slightly drying.

      Long and quite enduring.

Excellent whisky, nose is complex with some burnt oranges and spice, perhaps a whiff of smoke. In the mouth it is smooth with the oranges coming to the fore. Medium length finish accentuated with spices. Altogether a most enjoyable whisky, well worth the money.

    • Nose
Vanilla, apple, malt, orange, oak, marzipan, citrus, white pepper, honey, nutmeg, dough, currants and grapefruit. OK there is some spice, but to call this 'The Spice Tree'?
    • Taste
Now I get it! Chilli pepper, white pepper, wasabi and cloves. Then tangerine, marzipan, vanilla, malt and apple.
    • Finish
Malt, orange, white pepper, apple, caramel, hazelnut, white chocolate and smoke.

N: Rich and spicy. Nutty. Pepper, bees wax, oranges. Reminds me of an antique shop. Cinnamon.
T: Hot/spicy/pungent. Oranges. Cinnamon and pepper.
    F: Medium with cinnamon dominant

O: Rich spicy whisky. I'd enjoy it time to time, but I think it's not totally my taste. Bit too much (spicy/hot) for me, which throws it a bit out of balance imo.

  24. Ikkakumon scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    Friendly.
    • Nose
Sweet, honey, vanilla, orange, dried fruits.
    • Taste
Sweet on oranges and caramel, in a second time, a big wave of spices (pepper, chilli, ginger).
    • Finish
      Relatively short, a little bitterness.

    Note from www.compassboxwhisky.com

For information, here are the specs of the first two batches of The
    Spice Tree:

Type: Vatted Malt. A blend of single malts from different distilleries.

Tasting Notes: A natural, deep, gold-brown colour and a rich nose
with spices such as clove and nutmeg, and sweet stewed fruits.
Palate is soft, sweet, deep and rich with a malt whisky fruitiness
embellished by rich spice. Very long. Lead Distilleries: Dailuaine, Teaninich and two other malt whiskies
distilled in the villages of Brora and Longmorn.

Wood: 100% first-fill Bourbon barrels and first-fill, recharred
American oak hogsheads for the primary maturation. A portion of
the whisky went through a secondary maturation on new (virgin)
French Sessile oak, heavily toasted. Our inaugural batch (labelled
as such on the front and back labels) had one toast level. Our
second batch, released April 2006, had several different toast
levels for a slightly more subtle yet complex flavour profile,
but definitely similar to the inaugural batch.

  26. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

N: spices, honey, bees wax, some nuts, plums and vanilla
T: very spicy - pepper and paprika, nuts and citrus
F: orange, creamy coffee, again the spices - cloves and butterscotch
looks like a big part of Clynelish

The five Scotch whiskies in the Signature Range from Compass Box cover the entire spectrum of Scotch whisky styles, from the delicate, sweet character of Asyla, to the subtle vanilla, clove and fruity characteristics of Oak Cross, the rich and spice notes of The Spice Tree, the peatysmoky character of The Peat Monster and the elegant flavours of vanilla cream, toffee and coconut in Hedonism. Each is made from the highest quality casks, to create more complexity. The whiskies are combined according to each recipe and returned to casks for marrying up to 24 months before bottling. Steps like these enhance complexity, flavour integration and soft mouthfeel.

  28. QuarterCentury scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Compass Box`s delicious Spice Tree was briefly illegitimate, according

to SWA regulations. After adjusting its creation, Spice Tree is back,

and better than ever. It`s a blended malt made from Highland malt

whiskies, aged in specially made casks with new French oak heads.

    Colour: deep,gold-brown

Nose: spices -  nutmeg and clove - and stewed fruits.

I like this complex, affordable whisky. First introduction to Compass box, probably not the last.
    • Nose
The nose starts with notes of wet forrest, wood and hay. Then some sweet, warm spices like nutgmeg and cinnamon.
    • Taste
Starts with vanilla and orange. Followed by spices and orange peel. Slowly fades to a warm peppery finish.
    • Finish
Complex with orange peel, the spice and coffee beans.
