Intense oak note, a beautiful sweetness exudes the glass.
But you also notice the alcohol.
    Pretty young.

At first soft and round in the mouth,
    gradually becoming stronger.
    Spicy.
    And really tasty.
The wood remains, the alcohol taste too.

Old Pulteney 2006 Vintage is a solid entry in the distillery’s ongoing affinity with travel retail bottlings. No frills, no whacky finishes, just straight up ex-bourbon maturation from a range of well-selected 2006 casks. The OP standard bottling strength of 46% suits this expression well, and therefore I’d personally go at it right out of the bottle rather than looking to dilute down with water, which lessened the definition of aromas and flavours across the board.

    • Nose
Fresh and decidedly coastal. Sharp lemon zest, green apples and coconut shavings sit alongside salted caramel, malt and barley and some buttery pasty aromas – scones and custard cream biscuits. Smooth vanilla, marked salinity and a firm coastal breeze run throughout. The addition of water lessens the zing of the fruits and salt, and adds in some woodiness, but it’s arguably much more successful when kept at 46%.
    • Taste
Sweet and salty. Medium bodied with some slight oiliness on arrival, it initially delivers lemon, grapefruit and orange peels and zest – sharp and fresh, but also with caster sugar sweetness along for the ride. The malty biscuity notes detected on the nose translate through to the palate well, with croissants and brioche sitting courteously with sweet malted cereals. Sweet coconut and vanilla also come through, and are tempered by the Pulteney house-style saltiness and some distinctive minerality – rock pools and shale beaches. Water softens everything up and adds some fruity barley water into the mix, but as with the nose, I’d not say this was an overall improvement.
    • Finish
Medium in length and sweet with vanilla, but also slightly bitter with oak and cask char.

Good whisky and a nice introduction to Old Pulteney, if you're looking for one.
    • Nose
Lots of juicy pear and peach and quite sweet because of it, especially considering there's plenty of vanilla and a whisper of honey here as well. Hints of wet, thick rope and shy notes of lemon custard. Voluptuous, but not overly complex.
    • Taste
Dryer and salty with a nutty edge, which equates to salted peanuts, I guess. Subtle notes of grapefruit, accompanied by ginger and white pepper, and a whiff of malted barley. It does have an inherent sweetness though, with a thin veneer of honey and, mainly, vanilla.
    • Finish
Some oak and spices, with a light sweetness. Medium in length.

Nice whisky, a lot of sweetness, floral notes and freshness in the nose, al lot of sweet and peach in taste. Very pleasant dram and good value for money.

Very fresh, floral, also a bit of vanilla, then fruitiness comes in. Peach, pear, some citrus. Also some candy-like sweetness.
    • Taste
      86 86
Fruity, citrus, clearly some sour edge underneath. Pretty strong. Then some honey and vanilla, some orange as well. Thick structure, some caramel.
    • Finish
      86 86
Still pretty strong, sweet and fruity, peach, a bit spicy, orange and honey. Pretty long.

A lot of sweetness with hints of tea leaves in the nose, then a little oak is added to the mouth. A "good" whisky!

    Beautiful, very fruity ex-bourbon bottling.
    • Nose
Lots of vanilla and some salt, with a lot of fruit, peaches, apples, honeydew melon and lime. The nose is very buttery. Also a strong oak note is there, with milk chocolate and unripe hazelnuts.
    • Taste
Medium onset, silky mouthfeel. Sweet and fruity, again peach, apples and honeydew melon, shortly afterwards the lime. Salt, honey and vanilla. Slowly, the oak grows stronger, slightly peppery, and nicely spicy.
    • Finish
Medium. Strong oak, espresso, white chocolate, hazelnuts.

Still only a 1/5 into the bottle, so maybe I'll change the score in a few weeks (favorably so). The cask is strong with this one.
It feels like the genre that is best enjoyed on the porch during a light drizzle. Great value for money.

Headed by a lot of vanilla and coconut, shocking, I know. Once we get past that, it gets more interesting with chalk and dry vermouth.
    • Taste
      84 84
Crisp. Lemon rind, minerals, more vanilla, sage.
Water helps smoothen the edges and round it into a more compact taste. Also after a minute or two it lends to the balance between sweet and savory.

Doesn't knock my socks off, but that's to be expected at that age. Nice little duo of cereal and herbal notes.

So I did not expect much for the price. However, he even exceeds my expectations. Certainly not a toppaint. But more than basic solid. He has this beautiful fresh Old Pulteney note, does not look too young and tastes easy. For me a candidate for the next calibration whisky. And that is not meant to be disrespectful.
