    Good whisky and a nice introduction to Old Pulteney, if you're looking for one.
    • Nose
      Lots of juicy pear and peach and quite sweet because of it, especially considering there's plenty of vanilla and a whisper of honey here as well. Hints of wet, thick rope and shy notes of lemon custard. Voluptuous, but not overly complex.
    • Taste
      Dryer and salty with a nutty edge, which equates to salted peanuts, I guess. Subtle notes of grapefruit, accompanied by ginger and white pepper, and a whiff of malted barley. It does have an inherent sweetness though, with a thin veneer of honey and, mainly, vanilla.
    • Finish
      Some oak and spices, with a light sweetness. Medium in length.

    This was a sample off a neighbour. Another nice malt from the ever reliable Old Pulteney.

      Pear drops, orange pith, some sort of citrus herbal tea, refresher sweet. There is a plastic smell but it's more like an old plastic smell.
    • Taste

      More orange but peel this time. Tastes almost like a nice fruity white wine, like something from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. A nice texture to it and quite smooth for a 46%. There are some wood notes but they are quite subtle.

      A nice medium fruity finish with a pinch of salt on the death.

    85/86. This is definitely a bang for your buck dram. Especially if you can get them for the Luxemburg price of 35 euros a litre, then it's a no-brainer to buy several bottles.
    • Nose
      Fruity: Pear juice. It's not all quick sweetness though. The smell is thick and full, more than just fruity. Whiffs of honey, malt, smoke, salt, a 'hot' note and a slight meaty quality are all there but none overwhelming. Later some vanilla. With a few drops of water some ginger sauce.
    • Taste
      Sweet and hot. Pear juice with honey and a big chili pepper in it. A hay-like maltiness in the back.
    • Finish
      More room for the malt now. Still honey and pear, the chili pepper slowly leaves the stage. Eventually there's some nuts.

    The 2006 is in my opinion even better entry into the Pulteney world than the standard 12er. Real, unique, intense. Who likes "crunchy" rather than "soft", is well served with this Pulteney. Compared to the first tests, the slightly stronger oak bitterness has changed in the finish to the pleasant oak flavor. And uncolored and unfiltered bourbon barrels are (almost) always a temptation. A malt for socializing with friends.
    • Nose
      The Pulteney needs some time in the glass to develop the typical bourbon nose. Then the 2006 is intense: ripe Isabella grapes, vanilla, pleasant freshness, well-noticeable salt spray, oak (with the first button from the freshly opened bottle were a few matchstick heads from afar).
    • Taste
      In the mouth of the 2006 comes right once tingling with intense vanilla and grape fruit. The drizzle of a strong ocean wave breaking on the beach is also present, as well as fresh oak. Very concentrated, extremely crispy and compact.
    • Finish
      In the finish, the aroma pearl necklace also comes in full length, the oak becomes more intense. Unlike the first test from the freshly opened bottle, the slight bitterness has now vanished. Like it a lot.

    Old Pulteney 2006 Vintage is a solid entry in the distillery’s ongoing affinity with travel retail bottlings. No frills, no whacky finishes, just straight up ex-bourbon maturation from a range of well-selected 2006 casks. The OP standard bottling strength of 46% suits this expression well, and therefore I’d personally go at it right out of the bottle rather than looking to dilute down with water, which lessened the definition of aromas and flavours across the board.

    • Nose
      Fresh and decidedly coastal. Sharp lemon zest, green apples and coconut shavings sit alongside salted caramel, malt and barley and some buttery pasty aromas – scones and custard cream biscuits. Smooth vanilla, marked salinity and a firm coastal breeze run throughout. The addition of water lessens the zing of the fruits and salt, and adds in some woodiness, but it’s arguably much more successful when kept at 46%.
    • Taste
      Sweet and salty. Medium bodied with some slight oiliness on arrival, it initially delivers lemon, grapefruit and orange peels and zest – sharp and fresh, but also with caster sugar sweetness along for the ride. The malty biscuity notes detected on the nose translate through to the palate well, with croissants and brioche sitting courteously with sweet malted cereals. Sweet coconut and vanilla also come through, and are tempered by the Pulteney house-style saltiness and some distinctive minerality – rock pools and shale beaches. Water softens everything up and adds some fruity barley water into the mix, but as with the nose, I’d not say this was an overall improvement.

      Medium in length and sweet with vanilla, but also slightly bitter with oak and cask char.
