The sherry is definitely in there. Starting with notes like raisins, cherries and plums. Really nice complemented by Tobermory notes like soil, leafs and hay. Back to some fruits again with notes like Applesyrup and grapefruit. At the end notes of oak and some leather.
    • Taste
      84 84
A bit like the nose. Starting with raisins, cacao and a little note of caramel. Again Tobermory notes like soil, sea-salt and a rocky taste aswell, followed by a little pepper. A note of oak. At the end some nail polish.
    • Finish

Medium-long. Yep, still some raisins in there. Together with cherries, caramel sea-salt and nutmeg.

First impression is dirty / farmy / malty, which works well with peated Ledaig but is not directly convincing in this setting. A horse stable. Blackberry, caramel.
    • Taste

Better. Apple pie with cinnamon. Salted caramel and blueberry.
    • Finish
      85 85
      Blueberry, salted caramel and pastry.

This is a very pleasant sherried Tobermory!
    • Nose
Sweet&sour nose. Sherry driven but not overly cask dominated. Immediately that earthy, savory note I often get with Tobermory. Strawberry, forest fruits, sour grapes, fresh leather.
    • Taste
Sweet&dry. Plumbs. Accessible and friendly due to the 46%, but still a very good body. Some tingling spices inhere as well. Very palatable and lively mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Mediumlong. The finish is a tad bitter and oak driven at first. More yellow fruits here. Like yellow raisins & apricot. Also quite some dried Arabic orientated spices.

Taking the price in consideration I do regret the fact a little that I didn’t buy a bottle at the time of release.

Tasted this whisky at a tasting session at Passie voor Whisky on the 5th of May 2018.

bit damp, raisins, hint of smoke, mosh, bit fatty, mocha, a bit strange, but i really like it.

    Cacophony

Tobermory Distillery is set to reopen this year, after two years of refurbishments. Next to their very peaty Iona (only available at the distillery) and their mildly peaty Ledaig, they also have an unpeated malt named after the distillery. This youngling was bottled from a first fill sherry butt and cut to 46% by Dutch bottler Van Wees in the series The Ultimate.

OMG! This is just weird on the nose. The typical musty character of Tobermory goes head to head with some fresh sherry notes, making for a cacophony of aromas. Red berries, raisins, candied apple and a truckload of caramel bump into rubber, rotting wood and freshly polished leather with a hint of chocolate milk. I am not convinced.

On the palate, it is mostly the sherry that does the talking, putting the typical distillery character in the background. Not a bad thing, I’d say, for now I get mostly red fruit, leather, raisins and creamy sherry. A bitterness as if from cold coffee and a salty note finish things off. This is much better than the nose promised, but I’m still not a happy camper.

The finish is very long, creamy and dark.

Well, that was special to say the least, but it did not completely work for me. Thank you for the sample, Anthony!

Good price for a good Whisky.
    • Nose
      Sherry notes, red fruits notes.
    • Taste
Again the sherry influence: raisins, chocolate, some leather notes, shoe-polish hints. Takes some time with this one.
    • Finish
Medium to long. Nice aftertaste with creamy and sweet notes, mocca ice-cream, and the sherry influences.

    Nose:

Dense sherry, a little on the hardy side. There is also a farmhouse note in here. There are the usual red fruit notes, but there is a strange, but nice, sweet and hardy note.

    Taste:

Good sherry hit. There is chocolate, shoe-polish and leather. After seconds it gets a tad sour.

    Body:

    Full and creamy

    Finish:

Medium length. Creamy, sweet, some old school ice-cream. A tad of sherry and a sweet woodsap end.

    Price:

This is reasonable if found around €50,- tiill €55,-

    Presentation:

Sober and decent as always with The Ultimate. Comments:

Hint: this one drowns quite easy! Without water, give this one half an hour to breath and it gets better!

Taste is somewhat ‘darker’ than the nose, more chocolate and coffee. But a very nice price/quality, bfyb.
    • Nose
A hint of rubber at the start, raisins, citrus fruit, sherry notes, grapefruit, vanilla, apples, malt, peach. Then some musty notes, leathery, oranges and chocolate.
    • Taste
Honey, salty, citrus fruit, malty. Some bitterness with coffee, creamy, dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Creamy, chocolate, some aniseed, fruity, citrus and blueberries, medium length.

Weird marriage between classic musty Tobermory and very clean sherry. Almost like this dram was teaspooned with 20% sherried Arran. I like it.
