Whisky Reviews for Cambus 1991 VM

  1. peatbogger scored this whisky 88 points Specialist

Feeling of big time gamble when I bought this one, as I had tried another slightly older Cambus CC and really didn't enjoy it.
But this is nice, actually very good.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Not overly sherried, but sweet.
      Stewed plums, prunes.
      Soft ginger bread.
      Old furniture wood, with polish.
Very oily in the glass, looks almost sticky with long slow legs.
    • Taste
      90 90
Not as oily or sticky as it looks, but a very nice texture and mouthfeel.
Robust, with spices growing from the get go.
Again sweet with dark cooked fruits.
      Chocolate with lightly bitter orange.
    • Finish
      88 88
Spices stay for +medium length and gets a little dry.

  2. karloff scored this whisky 83 points Specialist

This was a sample courtesy of peatbogger.
I do like old grains and if this was my bottle I would experiment with water and probably grow to love it.
    • Nose
      80 80
It's a single grain and again I am struggling with the nose.
It has that typical grain nose, like a dull smell but this is helped out by the sherry influence but not much I might add.
Buttered toast and red current jam.
Hot cross bun and candle wax.
    • Taste
      85 85
I was hoping the taste would be a lot better than the nose as it usually is, this is better but it tastes unbalanced.
It is more full on grain and not enough sherry.
It is quite woody and dry.
The sherry is trying it's best to make an impact but it is just slapped to the ground.
If you add a couple of drops of water the sherry has another go and this time is a bit more successful.
    • Finish
      83 83
Without water it was dry and a bit dull.
With water it is quite soft and sweet.
