  1. Official tasting note

An eight-year-old Highland single malt released to commemorate the forthcoming opening of the John Crabbie & Co. distillery in Edinburgh. Paying tribute to John Crabbie's flagship eight-year-old blend, which was created in the 19th century, this has tempting flavours of honeyed fruits, flowers and spices.

The company's history with spirits goes back to 1801, when John's father Miller opened a shop in Edinburgh, and was principally concerned with bottling and shipping cordials and whiskies around the world.

Crabbie 8yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46%. Aroma is cherry Bakewell, alcohol infused marzipan, banana fritter, some mixed boiled sweets, touches of milky coffee and berry, kiwi and caramel fudge. Good aroma actually. Impressive for the low price. Taste is easy going, toffee, woody, touches of salt. Very clean spirit and enjoyable cask influence. Very solid stuff. Some similarities to Irish whisky but more characterful and complete. Eminently cohesive. I went in with low expectations and was really quite impressed here. An expertly put together whisky. 3.65 /87

C: Close to a Glen Moray perhaps? A decent and easy, light sipper.
