Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 1964 GM

The nose is gorgeous, the palate a little bit too thin and oaky.
    • Nose
Sweet and juicy sherry. Baked apples. Beeswax. Plums and prunes. Raisins. Also cough syrup. Leathery notes. Whiff of smoke. Rich and complex.
    • Taste
Polished oak. Stewed fruits. Quite spicy: pepper and nutmeg.  Slightly woody. Tannic and resinous. Espresso.
    • Finish
Medium long. Relatively dry and bitter. Orange peel. Becomes salty later on.

Great. If you do not have any problems with oak and you like sherry influence, then you will get your money worth. Really great. 90!
    • Nose
Heavy sherry notes. Plums, raisins. Clear oak, which is quite a bit aggressive. Not so dry, sweet as well. Leather. Chocolate, dark chocolate.
    • Taste
Dry sweetness. Plums, leather, fermented apple. Tobacco joins, becomes stronger and finally reigns supple.
    • Finish
Long, tobacco, dark dried fruit, sticky sweetness remains.

Strathisla ages well like Glen Grant and this is good stuff certainly but for me a little past its best and should have been bottled earlier.
    • Nose
Rich, and fruity on black cherry, full bodied red wine, redcurrant jus and a few balsamic notes.
    • Taste
Bitter at first but then some sweet meaty notes come through but also quite drying.

Some salted caramel, a little chocolate, dark raisin and over ripe dark plum.

      The oak is defiantly there
    • Finish
Quite long, smooth drying and a little bitter.

If I could afford it, than I would drink this stuff all day. Very good and very clean also, which maybe makes it a little bit boring. But sometimes boring is good. And in this case boring is VERY good.
    • Nose
Very sweet and clean, fruity sherry aromas. Some watery cherry lemonade, almondpaste and raisins. The fruity element mainly consists of caramelized apples, very nice. There's also a saltiness that I can't quite place.
    • Taste
Drying and very woody, but not too much. Just the way I like it in old whiskies, and this one is very old indeed. Chewy raspberry and also a nice hint of cookiedough. It has a spicy quality: aniseed, mint and pepper come to mind.
    • Finish
Spices, cherries surface again. After a while sweeter flavors appear and it gets a candy-like quality. And then finally a hint of smoke. Complex and long, but also lacks a bit of power. Still very good though.

    Comment LMDW:
Resulting from aging in second filling sherry casks, this single malt from the Strathisla distillery is full of character. Marked by notes of dried fruit, mellow wine and almond paste, a few drops of water bring out green apples and a slightly woody side. In the mouth, it is soft and subtly spicy, revealing an abundance of dried fruits and chocolate.

wow, this whisky at cask strength would be amazing.

Now it is still a great whisky but with a slightly weak aftertaste.

    Overall: great  90p.

Highly recommended if you like the old whiskies, not too strong but long, smooth, sweet, woody and sherry !
    • Nose
Dried fruits with distinct sherry notes. Influences from a sweetish dessert wine followed by some marzipan notes.
    • Taste
Apple and vanilla flavors with some sherry-wood flavor. A fresh mint develops along with almonds.
    • Finish
Very good length. Soft sherry with a woody/tannic finish.

A superb Strathisla "old" from Gordon & MacPhail. Highly recommended for all lovers of old sherried whisky (without being "monstrously sherry"). To enjoy (long) evening, well installed in his sofa (preferably old leather!). Even empty glass is a treat for the nose. For the record, whisky rated 93/100 by Malt maniacs!
