    Ben Nevis H2H
    1996 #1531 52.2% vs 1997 #91 58.4%

Overall I prefer the #1531 slightly due to the freshness on the nose. Both have equally good body on the palate.

Both very similar in some ways, with #1531 fresher on the notes, more on fresh and juicy fruits while the #91 is heavier on dried fruits and more oaky and dark chocolate. Some nice honey for the #1531, with a sweet and floral background. After sometime, the fruits started to come alive for the #91, and some vinegar and slight bit of ginger. Some nice vanilla come in for the #1531.

Overall the #1531 is fresher and lighter, while the #91 is heavier and stronger.

#1531 - rather bright, clean and oily. Nice resinous sweetness, tropical fruits, red fruits, taste like a PX cask to me. A little bit of dark chocolate and ginger.

#91 - more oaky, similar sweetness, more on dark chocolate and mixed nuts. More powerful, with lots of herbs and spices.
    • Finish
      87 87
#1531 - nice fruity finish, not very long but very refreshing. Some orange peel and ginger.

#91 - nice length, with more oakiness and tannin. Slightly dry, and nutty.

1480) Ben Nevis, 1996/2017, 20YO, #1531, The Single Malts Of Scotland, Elixir Distillers
    • Nose
N- Surely a 2nd or 3rd fill sherry butt with elegant dried fruits coming thru elegantly. With wet grass, aloe vera jello, raisin puree and our very much local special Teh-C. Much moist earth develop after breath. (87/21)
    • Taste
P- Generous sweetness with oak phenol, toasted, dried fruit and chalky. Warm hearty dried fruits pie. No dram, just rich and good as it is. (88/22)
    • Finish
F- Medium long, ginger candy, dry, elegant gentle dried fruits leading from nose to tail, with more muscle showing up. Is consistent and immaculate with fine waxiness. (89/22)

B/B- 88/22 Quality aroma and taste, but feel like a flattened plateau line on a graph that most of us seeing a lot on news nowadays, grateful it remains relatively high in this case.

      Weighted Rate- 87pt

If you are a fan of a light BN that is fruity and floral, this is for you.

Light prune, raisins, steamed walnuts and hot sweet potatoes. Waxy and oily vanilla honeycomb on plain white bread; yeasty.
    • Taste
      89 89
Soft, creamy and oily. Not punchy but mild, flavours of lychee, longan and kiwi fruit. Sweet and floral. Chestnuts, wet soil, and lush green fields.
    • Finish
      86 86
Short to medium, but the evolution of fruits have gone towards the tropical side of bananas, pineapple and jackfruit.

Nice creamy and oily Ben Nevis, great subtle dram yet complex.

    TASTING NOTE LMDW

This Ben Nevis 20 years 1996 was 1531 is marked by classicism and does not derogate from the reputation of this distillery of the Highlands: rich, complex and subtly spicy. Located just steps from the Lochy River on the outskirts of Fort William, Ben Nevis is still one of the last distilleries to use brewer's yeast and allows connoisseurs of us to recognize this precious juice. This single malt was distilled in 1996 and fully aged in Oloroso Sherry casks conferring on it an amber hue and notes of dried fruits, figs and sweet spices.

Nose: greedy. Prunes, fig with rum. Cocoa and coffee notes.
Palate: rich. Notes of dark chocolate, clove, dried fruits and vanilla.
Finale: long on tiramisu and berry fruits full of water.
