Whisky Reviews for Edradour 2007 SV

Boy this is a lovely sherried whisky. More on the nutty and sugary sweet side than fruit driven. It lacks a bit of complexity here and there but the overall balance is good with a lot of/sufficient cask influence. By no means outstanding or mindblowing stuff.. But hey, it doesn't pretend it is! Simple yet elegant presentation as always with Signatory, transparency when it comes to vintage, cask number, colouring etc. and a very good price when you consider today's market. In my opinion a hard to beat whisky. This is quality wise two or three steps ahead of the widely available sherried 'basic' Scotches (Glendronach 12, Aberlour 10/12, Glenmorangie Lasanta to name a few) at the price point of a daily, affordable dram. Will definitely buy again!
    • Nose
A dry Oloroso sherry nose with a sweet and floral backbone is the first impression. At first a little shy as it needs some time in the glass, no stinging alcohol heat. Winey for sure (Oloroso, a hint of aged tawny port as well), lemon zest, pineapple, apple pie, plum, blood orange, coconut, canned peach and mango are present on the fruity side. Caramel, butterscotch, Mars bar, Nutella, brown sugar, Grand Marnier liqueur, sultana, cacao dusting, walnut and lavender take up the sweet aspect. Sour milk, muesli, chili pepper, coffee, nutmeg, shoe polish, balsamic vinegar and a very slight hint of sulphur. Not as fruity but big on sweets and it has a creamy feel to it, with a sour/yeasty edge later on.
    • Taste
Zero burn on the arrival and it mostly follows the nose. Dry sherry again, slightly bitter now with a more upfront distillate. This mutes the fruity aspect a bit. Blood orange, cherry, kiwi, cranberry and raisin. Sweet malt, brown sugar, dark chocolate, caramel sauce, toffee, sultana, hazelnut and creamy butter make for a confectionery driven palate. Roasted peanuts, oak tannins, paprika and a sprinkle of salt to end things with. Maybe a slight, sweet cannabis note?
    • Finish
Medium to long. Dried fruits, sweets and slightly dry.

    86/87. Bang for your buck.
    • Nose
Nougatine, caramel, cherry and blueberry. Water releases a fresh blood orange note.
    • Taste
Blueberry, including its minty skin. Caramel and hazelnut. Also here a citrus note when adding water.
    • Finish
      Caramel, blackberry, cocoa and nutmeg.
