Whisky Reviews for Blair Athol 1995 ED

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.11 points

  1. hs305 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

[September, 2018] I had a very nice sherried 1995 Blair Athol from 2016 (WB id 78054, 90 points) and a comparable fine sister cask from this year (WB id 110433, 91 points) that both offered delicious chocolatey notes - so I have to try this cask bottled in 2017 too, for sure…

...and this one is a disappointment compared to its two sister casks. A rather uninteresting profile of an average-only drinking quality (I am very glad this was a sample only and I did not buy a full bottle). Very interesting to see how the same spirit matures to such enormous different drams over the course of 20+ years...

The colour is mahogany and the nose is comparable to the 2018: quite shy when neat that opens up after some breathing to an oloroso-sweet sherry profile without any flaw (no flinty notes this time). Some water releases more herbal aromas but still I miss the fine chocolates and the complexity of the sister casks. This is an average modern style sherry nose, at most...

The taste is not really layered and I would not call this complex, too. What a difference to the 2018 release! I even struggle to find the delicious chocolatey notes in here, they hide in the background and are hardly to convince to enter the spotlight. Water turns the dram more approachable but more dull at the same time - I am not sure what I prefer (or better: I am pretty sure I prefer any of the sister casks at any alcohol level over this one).
    • Finish
      84 84
The initial mouthfeel is hotter and less impressive than with the 2018 and it shows a drying-astringent moment of old papers that I do not like. It is less warming and almost not coating - this is 5-6 points lower compared to its sister cask bottled one year later. The finish is rather short and much less impressive with again the drying "old papers" moment - it is amazing to see what a difference a cask makes...

    • Taste

    • Finish
long, stewed fruits, charred sugars, dark butter?, rich buttery oloroso at the back with a touch of smoked bacon and floral notes
