[October, 2017]  Another one of these rather unknown distilleries that are capable to produce great malts (from time to time).  I bought this bottle for 180 Euro.

This is for sure a delicate and nice pre-dinner dram.  But I had much better old Dufftown before...

[November, 2017] I re-tasted it today. The dram seems to have improved after a month of breathing in an almost empty bottle. Much more fruity (e.g., ripe quinces) and spicy (e.g., like a mild curry) aromas both in the nose and on the palate. I score it two points higher at 90 today...

[January, 2018] Another re-taste tonight and I consolidate my score at 89 points. Obviously, this dram needs a lot of breathing time to fully enfold but it is worthwhile to wait for that. It gets very delicious and complex after that...

The colour is yellow gold and the texture shows slow legs and late fat tears. The nose is quite shy at the beginning and offers a delicate and subtle spring floral-honey profile. Funny, that I smell some sherry flavours too (despite this matured in a bourbon cask - maybe this is a refill cask from the sixties when the coopers used simply all material available to build cask and even included sherry staves in bourbon casks if they were at their hands and fitted best).

The taste again is rather shy on floral-grassy flavours with again some sherry notes, what is really interesting in such a case. But it looks as if this dram cries for water... Unfortunately, this dram does not really open up on water added and stays rather shy. But after at least 30 minutes (better more) of breathing in the open glass it releases more flavours especially on the palate and the finish. Among them some nice chocolatey and fruity aromas.

The mouthfeel is warming but less coating than the texture promised. No bitter or astringent moments. The finish is short to medium and sweeter than the taste with no bitter or drying off-notes.

Not particularly fruity, strongly sugary: brown sugar, powdered sugar, old frosting on donuts . At the beginning quite cool, later it is a bit worse. At the beginning it feels like a good, arranged whisky from bourbon casks. Later, it spills a bit and not much is happening in this dram anymore.

    87 / 100
    • Nose
shy at the beginning, vanilla, fresh pineapple, then sweet: fresh caramel, cane sugar, powdered sugar, delicate leather note, carrot cake, almonds again, fresh ginger, honey
    • Taste
sweet, oily, honey, almonds, vanilla, pudding, powdered sugar, orange juice, old frosting
    • Finish
medium-long, slightly alcoholic at the beginning, with notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, lemon zest

    Sample courtesy of hs305.

Noise; soft vanilla, caramel, a tad of anise. Very light and soft. Not too interesting.

Palate; Better than the noise, stronger caramel, with 50% chocolate, and a touch of dark fruit. Hard to pick-out much more.

Interesting dram, would need much more time with it to get a better handle on the nuance of flavours.

Honey and very ripe yellow fruits with a surprisingly very good body. Fantastic relaxed Speysider that got just the right touch of wood.
