  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

This one was on my bucket list for a long time. A pre-WOII whisky from one of my favorite distilleries. not cheap, but worth every penny for the experience. X-mas dram 2016.
    • Nose
Unexpected fruitiness of bitter oranges and overripe apples. Apricot jam. Later on more on old dusty libraries and wax polished furniture. Whiff of smoke form cigar boxes. Faint earthiness. Also meaty notes at the background (maggi).
    • Taste
Again this dusty fruity dryness of apricots and grapefruit. Tangerines and orange peel. Gingerbread. A touch of cedar wood. Clover honey as well. Some toffee notes. Hints of peat (of which use was not uncommon in those days). Though the whisky is quite thin, it's still very lively, absolutely not 'dead'.
    • Finish
Long and dry. A little lemon. Vanilla. Cinnamon at the end.

But 95 for palate & finish average.
    Note
The Macallan 1952 probably would have come 2nd if the nose had scored similar to the palate and finish, it would be unfair to push it any further down the pecking order and it was, along with the Glen Cawdor 1964 the only whisky I gave a 96p for the palate. It is where it is because the nose let it down and had a burnt off note I did not like but the taste was lovely.

A very fragile, sweet old lady pf a whisky.
I need to try this against the William Longmore Decanter I just got a sample of WB ID 121067.
    • Nose
      90 90
At first there is a massive hit of toffee/caramel and then a cereal note.
the sherry is on the sweet side, faint hints of polish and riveta crackers, rye bread, that sort of thing, possibly a little marmalade note.
    • Taste
      91 91
Quite thin on the palate at first but a lovely spice note and as the nose hinted at the sherry is on the sweet side, not heavy or cloying or anything like that.
This is what I call and elegant and refined dram, others might call it `lightweight`.
A sugared almond note appears then more sweetness in the form of kids chocolate, you know too sweet for adults but the kids lap it up.
    • Finish
      89 89
A little giner enters the fray which lingers and this has decent length but still on the light side

An herbal nose with some stone fruits, toffee and tangerine on the palate, long balanced finished, feel privileged to be drinking a piece of history

My first and so far only whisky from the thirties. Unfortunately, he does not keep what the nose promises.
    • Nose
The best thing about this fabric: sherry, fruits and a gentle spiciness - magic herb, gingerbread? To meditate.
    • Taste
The taste can not compete with the nose:
Sweet sherry and fruits, but these on the edge of soapy.
    • Finish
Long finish, but the fruits drift towards perfume.

  7. dram-drinker scored this whisky 91 points Moderator

Surprisingly good despite the age but probably not the best one.
    • Nose
Old books. Vegetal and slightly grassy notes.
    • Taste
      Woody and toffee notes.
    • Finish
Sweetness combined with a tad bitterness.

Really old books and toffee. 80 proof instead of 70 proof would have been even greater.
