Whisky Reviews for Black Rock 16-year-old IW

  1. Official tasting note

    official description:

Black Rock Batch 4, single malt whisky, 56.4% vol.

Black Rock, a range for independent bottlings from the rugged cliffs of Ireland. Matured for 16 years in a bourbon barrel, twice distilled and bottled at a cask strength of 56.4%, it shows the stormy sides of Ireland. A very complex whisky that shows many facets, but is by no means mild and soft. A whisky that shows noticeable wood notes on the nose and then shows completely different facets in the taste, with a nice sweetness, light fruit notes and spiciness.

The bottles are individually numbered, not colored and not chill-filtered. The whisky has been distilled twice.

I think that's pretty good. Nice bourbon barrel notes and moderate oak.
He doesn't really make mistakes for me. You can leave it like that.
    • Nose
The fruits are more yellow. Little pear. Naturally cloudy apple juice. Peach. Every now and then a few exotic fruits like lychee and dragon fruit. Some shortbread. The wood notes are fresh and juicy. Behind it a little pepper and a cooling note of alcohol.
    • Taste
At first sweetness reminiscent of rock candy. Then a mixture of seasoning and the yellow fruits. Then the fruits turn sour. Not quite ripe yellow gooseberry. Cloudberries. Also some lemon fizzy sticks. Salivation.
    • Finish
The yellow fruits fade away. Citrus notes. It still tingles a bit, but is getting drier. Tree sap. Removes grapefruit.

I think the 16 years spent in oak are its saving grace, otherwise this would've turned out rather bland, especially on the palate (lovely nose, though).

Undiluted, the nose doesn't exactly blow me away. Lots of cereals and the typical maize-like sweetness of ex-bourbon wood. Some fragrant citrus notes, but no tropical fruitiness or other typically Irish glories. Opens up miraculously with water, though, which adds charcoal and barbecued pineapple and brings out more fragrant oak. This really benefits from aeration and dilution. The oak is still doing almost all of the heavy lifting, but the nose turns out quite heavenly regardless.
85 points without, 88 points with water.

Without water, it's mainly spicy, with plenty of oak and barley. Well drinkable at cask strength, though.
Water adds some faint yellow fruits (banana and apricot, perhaps). Very okay, but really unmemorable.
    • Finish
      79 79
Without water: Straw, white pepper, quinine, dry oak.
With water: see above, plus vanilla pudding and banana puree.
After a couple of minutes, some scurfy/sour wood makes its presence felt, which distracts a few points.

Very shy on the nose, alcohol is generally very well integrated but I would have hoped for more intensity of the aromas.
