Oh man, Sauternes! I admit that I'm getting weak. Actually, I should just blindly buy all positively listed distilleries and Sauternes barrels, I'm lying down again.
    • Nose
Extremely creamy, sweet and nutty, the smoke can only be guessed at, white chocolate, liquorice, vinous
    • Taste
creamy, nut, sweet, difficult to describe, like a syrup that you pour into coffee, white chocolate and nut, then also grapes, vinous, the smoke doesn't even come to mind because of sheer sweetness, but it's there, really quite sweet, grape must, super delicious
    • Finish
warming, nuts, sweet, now it is sticky, slightly tart from bitten grape skins, light smoke on the palate, but smoke is really not the big issue here, some salt, light chilli on the tip of the tongue, hazelnut ice cream

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring, a vivid wave of aromas rises from my glass: an intense sweetness is densely interwoven with light smoke and a powerful nuttiness. The strong alcohol (57.9%) is very well integrated and barely perceptible to me (also due to the aromatic intensity). The greasy smoke of Ballechin is relatively easy. These are joined by earthy and dirty notes, which often associate me with the smoke to a smokehouse at the edge of the forest. The beguiling sweetness is always present. Dark forest honey, burnt caramel crust of a crème brûlée, red grapes, raisins, a little malt, plenty of nuts, chocolate and toasted aromas (towards coffee). Echoes of spices and oak are hidden in the background. I like it very much!
    • Taste
Powerful and sweet-spicy-smoky, the Ballechin detonates on the palate. The high alcohol content puts the tip of the tongue in a pincushion for a moment, before the malt, with an oily texture, floods the entire mouth and lines it with a wonderful sweetness. The greasy smoke (now with slightly ashy notes) tastes a little stronger. The dominant nuttiness mixes with beautiful chocolate notes and reminds me of the nutcracker chocolate. Red grapes, malt, dark forest honey, caramel, raisins, roasted aromas (coffee, espresso), earthy aromas and spicy oak notes follow. The alcohol is very well integrated again. By adding a few drops of water, the malt is even sweeter and more harmonious, but without losing strength.
    • Finish
Long, sweet-spicy-smoky and warming. The finish starts with a small pinch of pepper on the tip of the tongue. The sweet flavors flare up one last time before light smoke (again greasy and ashen) and intense nut flavors and spicy oak finish the malt slowly. Delicately bitter chocolate and pleasant roasted aromas set the finishing touch.

Yesterday the Ballechin 2004 Manzanilla found to be extremely cool, today it continues directly with the Sauternes.
What should I say that part is just as fat and that literally.
I have to keep an eye on Ballechin's special composition in the future.

extremely fat and full, very sweet notes of wine, the smoke is in the discreet and a little cold, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, marzipan, nuts, roasted aromas and burnt caramel, somehow I am reminded of a Snickers.
Very close to the age and very much to find.

Here, too, one thinks, wow, everything is very intense and full-bodied again. Somewhat spicy-peppery on the palate but not of alcohol, which is also very well integrated here.
Almost all of the aromas from the nose can be found again, with the addition of a greasy touch and the smoke accompanies everything beautifully from the background.
    • Finish
      88 88
unfortunately, fruity wine notes remain only briefly, the longest remains a warming spice and very light dry woody notes, this is now sometimes the ash out a little bit out the smoke brings with it and joins the spices and the woody note.

Good without water. Very good with water. The few drops of water finally lure the whisky its great fruit and sweetness and finally release it from the claws of the fire. 90 points.
    • Nose
Immediately smoke comes in the nose, but not cold and ashy, but warm, vinous and sweet. Torfig-earthy and at the same time fruity and sweet. A very interesting combination. Then someone pushes the door to the cowshed and hay, dried cow dung and crusted earth fills the nose. The impression remains for a moment, until it fades. Smoky cherry chocolate comes to light. Almost soft. Red Berrenftüchte can still be seen. Water : The smoke goes back and it gets sweeter, chocolatier and softer. There is no sign of Kuhstall anymore. Subtle smoky berry jam with chocolate chips.
    • Taste
Sweet chocolate with apricots and dried cherries, then immediately smoke, but not much. Full and creamy, the whisky rinses the mouth. Partly the smoke is so far in Hinzergrund that it is really juicy. Dee Rauch will return soon. The Nachschmecken now has slightly ashy features. Water : It gets so much sweeter and juicier. Only a trace of smoke remains in the throat and spice the fruity-sweet-chocolate mixture. Great!
    • Finish
Ash and chocolate remain in an exciting interplay. Long. Warm.

The whisky in the glass looks wonderful ... like dark wood with a slightly reddish tone. When I smell it, I'm amazed at how gently the 57.9% alcohol is incorporated. Nothing burns in the nose, the alcohol can hardly be felt. The very subtle smoke is closely interwoven with a pleasant forest honey sweetness and dark and red fruits such as strawberries, cherries and raisins. I get a very strong association of nut chocolate with whole hazelnuts. Slight hints of citrus fruits are noticeable, wine aromas and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper. Wonderfully harmonious! The nose is really great, I have to say that.

In the mouth, the high alcohol content ensures a strong start, but is wonderful to enjoy pure. Sweetness floods the mouth with a smoke that is now stronger than in the nose. Oily, strong, and at the same time very supple for the 57.9%, it takes up the mouth, the fruits are dark in the mouth too and partially boiled down and then sprinkled with lemon zest. The spices are now much stronger with cinnamon and pepper. Maritime notes with a little salt harmonize very well with the pleasant smoke, some bacon and the great heavy sweetness. Delicious!

In the finish, the smoke remains in the mouth, played around with the forest honey sweetness and hints of the red fruits. Everything is sprinkled with pepper and stays in the mouth for a long time.

Overall, I have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised. The best of the 3 whiskys from the Local Dealer Selection 2019 that I have tried so far. There is a clear buy recommendation for the price of around 90 €, but I assume that it will not be so easy anymore. If so: buy ... it's worth it!

For me there are good 89/100 points. I would definitely put this bottle on the shelf myself ... too bad that I only have one sample. Such a whisky is one of the reasons why I try out the entire Local Dealer Selection. In addition to some weak whiskys, there is also such a great malt every now and then.

Final Dram #7 in local dealer Tasting... Refill Sauternes Cask... Smoky highland whisky with 50 ppm... Interesting complex nose: meaty and sweet Bacon... In the mouth sweet smoke, but a bit variable... Gets a bit bitter with water... Interesting one but the price/value could be better. (90€)
