This is a good whisky, but not such a smelly smoke bomb as expected. However, there is not really much besides smoke. Smoke and citrus notes - Ardbeg 10 can do that too, but better. As an experience, this is a whisky that should have been tried - if only because it determines that ppm is not everything.

Heavy smoke, but pleasant and not overly long as expected. Since the alcohol is already clearer at the beginning. Quite citrusy in the background, and maybe some malt.
    • Taste

The 57% are already clear at the beginning. Even the smoke is there immediately, but not as stifling as feared. The smoke is also pleasant on the tongue, as well as generally a soft and warm mouthfeel prevails. Behind it but also clearly the citrus notes. Youthfulness is well captured by the smoke, but it is not that crazy multi-layered. Then some malt.

      Pretty long and smoky.

Very smoky peat flavor with a long finish with a hint of nuts. Big favorite.

Great whisky, wonderfully powerful. One of the best whiskys I have ever drunk (I immediately bought a bottle for later)

    • Nose
      85 85
non-alcoholic, distinct peat smoke, warm smoked salmon, potato salad without bacon, sweetish, vanilla.
    • Taste
      86 86
      Not extreme but intense.
Full and fiery, tingling and burning on the tongue. Oily, engaging, spicy-tart with slightly bitter tannins. Slightly sweet and the taste somewhat reminiscent of the cooked vegetables.
    • Finish
      85 85
Warm, intense, tart-sweet, slightly spicy, soft, tart and salty, stimulates salivation.

      * with a little water:
Soft, sweet and still very intense with smoke, tarred hemp rope, slightly spicy and tart, very long finish with a little ash.

    Color: white wine
Nose: Heavy, oily and very closely networked nose - coal, ash and a truckload of peat. Thick clouds of smoke hang in the glass and cover the sweet, vanilla-containing aromas. Later the salty lemon notes pierce more and more. However, the overall impression remains creamy, dark and mighty peaty.
Taste: Starts with a thin consistency, but then immediately becomes creamier and fatter. Vanilla, honey, salted butter and tart wood that quickly becomes bitter. Wood and herbs form a unit here, which has a green and minty content and is complemented by a sticky sugar sweetness.
Finish: long-peaty, smoky and fresh. The combination of mint, wood and lemon counters the "dark" side of the malt. Chocolate, dry ash, espresso and sweet, peaty smoke remain.
Note: Unfortunately a bit too bitter in taste.
    89 points (nose: 90 / taste: 86 / finish: 88)

    Colour: Pale Gold
Nose: neat: well, first comment is that the peat is lesser than what I was expecting. There's peat obviously, iodine, a salty note but its also very buttery and grassy, with a light sweet note as well. There's certainly an alcohol sharpness but it is surprisingly subdued on the nose. with water: pretty much unchanged.
Taste: neat: here is where you really feel the alcohol but still it's well drinkable neat. Profile very much like in the nose, peat, iodine, butter (lots of it), barley, there's some charcoal or burn notes and also some ginger notes. with water: again, like in the nose, water doesn't really change the profile, other than it seems to bring forward a more peppery/ginger note.
Finish: it's medium length. The peat is the longer lasting flavour.
Comments: I ordered this sample in MasterofMalt as I was very curious to try out these "peat monsters". As far as peat goes, you'd be surprised that this doesn't feel more peaty than an Ardbeg Corry, for example. It has a good profile, but I feel that this Octomore range is more a product of marketing than anything else. Still, it's a very good whisky, I just can't overcome the very high price tag for this 5 year old whisky!
    MY SCORE: Recommended +

Maritime on the nose, but without excess, almost sweet. No surf. Well there is peat, huh, but it is perhaps the least peaty Octomore I have tasted. Behind, cereals and "wise fruits". In the mouth, salty attack, lots of spices. Final marked by an incredible roundness for a 5 years, no angle. And citrus fruits. With water, it is cereal character that is honored: wheat attic in all its strength and intensity. And a hint of aromatic herbs? In the mouth, a note of coffee is felt. Enthusiasm 3/5
