Whisky Reviews for Fettercairn 1988 SV

  1. dRambo scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

a nicely matured, gentle, quite fruity Dram especially on the palate neatly turns on and optimally brings his age to advantage - price performance I think is great - but a direct Do-Wollen-Reiz is not there yet - the Scoma Burgie 86 has me well dirty
    • Nose
Fresh in the glass, herbaceously austere, with more time it gets more pleasing, oily oak, some old lemon, delicate pineapple notes - which warms ever more intense, spicy honey, fresh light oak with lots of mint and ethereal notes like rosemary, citrus and eucalyptus
    • Taste
At first sourish sweet with intense almost overwhelming lemon note, apples, pears, fresh and canned pineapple, that sounds pretty fast - he gets calmer - with some chewing geranium leaves, covered green tea, jasmine flowers, astringent light oak, birch sap, vegetable spicy tannins, the mouthfeel is slightly syrupy viscous, nice texture
    • Finish
roasted grains, light flour, cultivated oak spiciness - multi-faceted, fine, spicy, slightly waxy, here you can feel the age, quite long and warm

Great ex-bourbon barrel! Supple and "old", but at the same time intense and powerful. 88 points.
    • Nose
Vanilla and pineapple are right there. Spicy, aromatic oak, which quickly gains in intensity. Very sweet with sour lime splashes. I smell a little coconut. Even some malt character is noticeable. Lemon cake roll. Peach, passion fruit. Fine wood chips. Now herbs are added. Oregano and some dill. The nose is getting older by the minute, tobacco gets into the nose after the inclusion of the palate.
    • Taste
An oak dominated, full and astringent mouthfeel begins. Sweet, lemon and vanilla. A whole fresh fruit salad with pineapple, apples, oranges and sugared almond slivers. A good deal of tobacco creeps up and governs the re-tasting. Chocolate that is slowly getting darker. The alcohol is super involved. The second sip is sweeter but has more tobacco.
    • Finish
Warm and sweet with tobacco and delicate bitterness. Medium to long.

a great "Cereal" Malt. Lots of fruit and ripe wood notes with cereal arms. I did not know that yet.
    • Nose
Pure: slightly pungent at first, lemon in orange lemonade. When that's over, pineapple follows with yogurt, honey and cereals, cereals and herbs on top. Very ripe, very complex without being woody. With water it becomes more flowery, "clearer", more accessible.
    • Taste
Pure: concentrated fruit at the beginning, then spicy oak with white pepper, salt and a pinch of parsnip. Here, too, herbs and a delicious muesli note. Complex and complex. Not quite as round as the Linkwood. With water: tasty, slightly malty and less spicy.
    • Finish
      long, malty and fruity.

It is of medium viscosity and its bouquet is of moderate intensity. I have aromas of pear, honey, oak, citrus fruit and subtle vanilla. Moderately complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. Alcohol is pretty well integrated and its body is relatively light.

  6. SRB scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Looks much younger than he is.
    • Nose
Restrained, "cool", herbs, slightly mineral, we then a little more rustic, moist earth, roots, slightly waxy, baked apple
More rustic with water, ham is added, damp wood
    • Taste
Hot, pepper, needs water: Slightly sour, lemon peel, pipe tobacco, essential oils, a touch of sweetness, but hardly gets through
    • Finish
Long and warm, bitter, sour, woody, oak, chewing tobacco

    • Nose
      90 90
Pear, honey, oak, citrus, caramel, subtle vanilla
    • Taste
      90 90
Honey sweetness, vanilla, oak, pear, oily
    • Finish
      90 90
      Pleasant, intense, long-lasting

    • Nose
Wonderfully old-fashioned and aromatic. Bouillon cubes, dried mushrooms, citrus zest, salt, lots of malt, yeast and soil. Wonderfully put together. Gradually, a trace of smoke.
With water: more aromatic but also more intense and fruity. In addition, flowering heather, blossom honey, wet ropes and malt.
    • Taste
Wonderfully aromatic with a strong earthy onset. Full seasoning, yeast, malt and a hint of smoke. Will be spicy and quite energetic.
With water: complex, aromatic and emphasizes earthy. Becomes a bit heavier and finely spicy.
    • Finish
Long, aromatic, sticky and again slightly dried mushrooms and bouillon cubes.

Cross comparison with the filling of TWA, WID: 97176

Had made too much riot without water. Have slightly diluted. Should now have 50 turns.

Overall, a tad worse than the TWA, because here the sharpness seems too dominant. Although a little more fruit comes along.
    • Nose
      88 88
Green apple + banana. Overall sweet, honey? Sharpness sometimes flashes through. It definitely makes you want to.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet start. Nice acid and still a ginger sharpness. Creamy mouthfeel that also tastes like honey. Overripe tropical fruits.
    • Finish
      87 87
Very pleasant. Slight acidity and a bit bitter at the end. Very harsh overall. Every now and then the tropical fruits sound again.

A roller coaster. So many flavors so well integrated. I really like this (for me leather) note. Coupled with herbs and fruits and vanilla and honey, malt also wonderfully available.
A real dream of a malt.
    • Nose
I have no idea where to start. Very sweet, fruit and vanilla, but also herbs at the same time. Clear leather; Malt is there too; A great oak, citrus, honey all at once; wonderful herbs
    • Taste
Boa, what a roller coaster. Immediately leather, then sweet and oily, light oak, sometimes slightly tart, then sweet again. Beautiful fruits, then herbs and flowers, leather again and again, the hammer the part
    • Finish
Warm, oak, malt and fruit, walnut ?; becomes slightly bitter, then again sweet, then again oak, etc. Delicate oak remains long, dries minimally. What a great malt.
