      Peat, burnt wood, sea salt, a touch of medicinal, coffee and milk chocolate

    Blind tasting:

    Fragrance: peat, wood fire, sweet grain tones, orange, green herbs, dune grass, sea - I immediately think of Lagavulin and that association does not go away anymore.

    Taste: thick fatty sweet peat, grist, seaweed, dry wood tone, ash, tar, smoldering fire, grain and sweetness. Dry and a bit young.

    Finish: Long and sweet again, smoldering fire. Delicious stuff.

    I think it is fair to say that Edradour distillery has brought their peated whisky up to Islay standards.

      Coastal notes with sea water breeze and beach bonfires, it appears, since these are soon replaced by other smells. Soft smoky raisins, wet leather jackets, dusty hessian and smouldering coals. Gets sweeter with some dusty vanilla, dirty dried figs and old barn. It also gets ashier. Some soft aromatic herbal notes in the back, in particular a upcoming smells of fresh parsley. Gets softer, more fruity, but stays rather dirty. Smoked walnut and grape skins and a little sweet back-note, which I think is nougat. Yes, red fruit-filled nougat. Well balanced nose. The fruits becomes stronger with more fresh red berries, cranberries and a hint of grapefruit. I think I even catch a scent of bubblegum. There is also a tiny farm-y side to this.

      Ashes, dried fruits and nuts. Here the port casks especially do their thing. Raisins, leather, dried figs and apricots. Then salted meat, mackerel, and sardines. Slightly stronger notes of vanilla in the development, and a hint of dry (diluted) red wine next a to barbecue. Smoked berry juice. Nicely “tamed” peat, not like these “bombs” we see (too) often nowadays, but certainly not weak. The salty influence becomes somewhat clearer, along with more fruity wine and dirty peat. The after taste is long, ashy, fruity and very pleasant.

    Nose: peat, sherry, peated sherry, caramel, burned crème brulee

    Taste: peat, round, creamy, but alcohol sting, ash, fire, plastic, spice, salt, smoke, wood, sherry, blackberries. This is so good

    Finish: more of the sherry, ash, drying burned wood, burned toffee. Also a little bitter, sour and long-lasting salty aftertaste.

    Colour: amontillado

    A powerful spirit combined with port maturation, and perhaps some sherry maturation before? It's raw and earthy, even a bit meaty. Yet the port maturation with red fruit (mainly cranberry) works very well!

      Very mineral, leafy and earthy. Various sorts of floor (dunnage, forest and the like), autumn leafs, but certainly quite "red" too: cranberry, strawberry. Some green notes of eucalyptus and spearmint follow.

      Seriously good to drink, well balanced. It's certainly not too sour as sometimes happens with port matured whiskies. The peaty spirit is bold enough to tackle this. It's fishy on the one side, earthy on the other side, and has this dry cranberry-like feel. Not too complex, but very pleasant.

      More towards salted liquorice now, with raspberry and cranberry flavour. A bit dirty overall, but that's good.

    87/88. Decisive to go for 87 is that it can't handle water very well.
    • Nose
      Salted caramel, peat, liquorice, sulphur, nutmeg, chocolate. With water more sherry: cranberry.
    • Taste
      Caramel, salami, peat, cranberry, nutmeg and chocolate.
    • Finish
      Peat, salted cranberry, caramel, Printen, liquorice, hazelnut paste.
