    Blind tasting with my impressions
    • Nose
Ok, this could very well be. Initially an older, settled sherry cask bottling with a trace of wet, dusty cellar or just old, good cask. But a round, light bourbon cask nose is also there. Maybe a mix of 16 year old bourbon and sherry casks or just good refilled sherry casks. At the beginning I would have estimated the alcohol content at 56%, after a longer stay at a maximum of 50%. Orange and peach dominate the nose over time.
After the first sip, the fruit moves into the background, more of a subtle fruit basket without being able to name the fruit exactly. I think of wood that was cut and then stored outside in all weathers for a few months.
    • Taste
Noticeably tart, strong, spiciness from the barrel, dark wood, a little bitter, but in a good way. Now I'm leaning towards 48% ABV. fixed. On the 2nd sip, an unripe peach or peach snap comes through, orange peel is evident.
My tip: 48% ABV, refill sherry cask, 16 years, Highlands or maybe Speyside, definitely not a standard bottling
    • Finish
The wood spice rolls over the tongue. The wood tingles. Your mouth gets warm. medium finish. Tannins and orange peel remain, but also some hidden sweetness.

This should not have been bottled. A very very alcohol driven Macduff in which only some fruits and caramel sweetness can be found. Water doesn’t make the sharpness go away and pretty much messes all up besides the taste, that stays consistent. A alcoholic nose, a sulphury finish. No, bad stuff.

Nice whisky that may have a slightly too high alcohol percentage. The taste is nice, but after a drop of water it becomes a bit flat.
    • Nose
      81 81
Alcohol abounds, but through the alcohol you can smell the beautiful sherry tones. Vanilla, sherry, dark fruit, sweet, citrus.
    • Taste
      84 84
Quite spicy in taste, but due to the burning you can taste grass, lime, cinnamon, vanilla, hay, fruity. It tastes better than it smells.
    • Finish
      83 83
Aftertaste is reasonable. Still, the taste remains good and you can enjoy it for a while.

  7. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

I also find it out of balance. Can handle a lot of water for the alcoholic punch, but I can't really find any big differences with water aromatic-wise. It is actually a rubbish bottling of van Wees. They can do a lot better than this.
    • Nose
Uh...alright this desperately needs water. Maybe it's me but I find a closed, rotten smell on the nose without it. I would not be wondered if this cask was moldy from the inside. Very unpleasant nose initially. I smell white wine/ white grapes initially. I wonder if it's an ex Amontillado sherry cask. I recently drank that type of sherry and I smells very familiar. I also didn't like that type of sherry btw.
    • Taste
Onesided taste, not a lot going on inhere. it's peppery but hey, 61%...duhhh. With even more water it does soften up but taste-wise I can't point out any big differences or specific aroma's. It's very Sulphury.
    • Finish
Medium finish. Very alcohol driven. Some wood and fruit maybe but I can't really make any sense of it.

Perfect to mix with coke for some none picky friends. rubbish to drink on it's own Imho.

Not a very bad whisky, but the nose is off-balance. Especially when you add water. But you need water because it is 61% ABV.
    • Nose
      82 82
Sweet and thick sherry influence. It is the spicy type of sherry. In the background are the dried fruits. But the spicyness is on top.
With water: some dirty notes come up front. There is burned chocolate, some ash notes and a weird stable influence.
    • Taste
      86 86
A burst of alcohol, but after that you get a spicy sherry influence, followed by quite some fruitiness but quickly overtaken by tannins. The taste is not really very well.
With water: More read fruit is popping up, but overall pretty similar.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-long length. There are sweet and caramel notes in here. But in the long run there is quite some leather and a bit of woodpolish to be found.

Got this as 100ml from a bottleshare. It is out of balance. Either nose or taste is ok. Unfortunately not both.
    • Nose
      83 83
Only a few drops of water improves the taste, but kills the nose immediately. Not good.
    • Taste
      86 86
Strong spicy taste; gets milder when adding a few drops of water (especially on the alcohol). For me this improves the score. Sherry.
    • Finish
      85 85
Dry; alcohol comes back. Medium long.

An sich a nice taste, but I think the alcohol prevails. I think the finish will taste good in the long run and the smell beforehand makes my mouth corners point upwards. :-)

Excited by the alcohol, also hangs.
      Sherry
Fruit (red), green apples, oranges ..

  11. Dre73 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Very tasteful, fruity and sweet. Alcohol is VERY prominent here.
    • Nose
      85 85
Smelling like sweets, Haribo, and fruity. Prunes, earthy notes, winegums. Strong, alcohol pretty prominent every now and then. Also some cappuccino.
    • Taste
      86 86
Strong, pretty pungent, and intense, winegums, sweets, 'strooigoed'. Cappuccino as well. Alcohol again pretty prominent, what a bomb! It pretty much anesthetizes the mouth. Also some chocolate.
    • Finish
      86 86
A little less heavy now, fruity, red fruits. Winegums still, and honey. Pretty long finish.

Fruity, sweet like winegums and candy chains. Sherry and alcohol
    • Taste
A lot of alcohol. Pepper and then the sherry influences.
    • Finish
      Not very long. Peperig

  16. Allandale scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Though heavy in its alcohol , it is not dominating.

    A nice Ultimate.
    • Nose
Soft spicy/herby aromas, whiff of sweet wood. Sherry notes present: chocolate, sweet candy, orange, raisins, fruity.
    • Taste
Sweet, cherries, vanilla, creamy ice-cream , but also peppery, spicy notes. Complex.
    • Finish
Mediumlong. A short aftertaste. Little dry in the background . But pleasant.

Clearly very young. The price vs quallity is still very good.
    • Nose
Fruity and lively start with some chocolate and sweet candy hit. This nose isn't shy at all. Apples, raissins and some orange.

Lots of cake, vanilla and stracciatella ice cream. The alcohol makes the nose big and powerfull.
    • Taste
Chilli pepper and dry woodchips. Caramels, some fudge and orangeskin. Bitter cacao.
It's still heavy, but tastes very young.
    • Finish
      Quicky fates away into nothing
