Typical good old little sherry bomb. Yet another GlenSherry ;)
    • Nose
      84 84
Dark chocolate, leather, cherries, hint of sulfur that is a bit too obvious, a bit of coffee. Tiramisu, bit of orange peel. Tobacco leaves. Slight marshmallows. Nose is a bit too sherry-driven.
    • Taste
      87 87
Thiccc, dark chocolate, cherries come back, wood-like, dark coffee, nutmeg is prominent. Leather shoe. Clear wood influences which make it slightly bitter and dark.
    • Finish
      85 85
Finish has medium duration. Dark chocolate, dry wood, hint of cherry, espresso. Sweetness from before has mostly disappeared in the finish.

A full, ripe sherry nose. Chocolate, raisins. Leather and wax. Forest fruits. Delicious!
    • Taste
      88 88
Dark earthy flavors with a bitter edge. Immediately afterwards it becomes soft and sweet. The bitterness of the chocolate is nicely balanced with the sweetness of the forest fruits.
    • Finish
      86 86
Soft and creamy, medium in length.

Leather, cotton candy, roasted almonds, sherry barrel, orange peel, cherry compote, buttered toast, buttercup, mint, dark chocolate, furniture polish, lavender, coconut, then dark berries and propolis. At first I thought: it's delicious but actually very one-dimensional; But he is not really, the aromas are just very much in the sherry profile.
    • Taste
      88 88
It repeats itself: Sherry all the way, with leather and wood notes, orange peel, cherries, almonds, honey and liquorice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Sherry, apple compote, dark chocolate, espresso, dry oak, black pepper and little grassy notes.

No highlights, relatively balanced, embedded in thick sherry profile, yummy, tasty and round. Only the wood notes at the end come through too tight.

    BLIND TASTING

N: Sherrynoten, as I love them, slightly musty, subtly sour and slightly fleshy: the smell of dark fermented fruit, balsamic and some soy sauce. Smells definitely a bit older. No alcohol booze, I think there are either angels nibbled on the share or he is not strong.

G: Sherry, seasoning, vanilla, much gentler than its predecessor, I like it much better. The musty sherry shows up here as well. Creamy and full-milk chocolate.

A: long, miss something here the musty, the finish is rather unspectacular, vanilla and slightly astringent with minimal bitterness but round and consistent.

Conclusion: delicious. Especially the nose is bombastic. For me an absolute highlight, almost like an old Glenglassaugh, beautiful, no excellent!

Now I'm a bit baffled. Strangely enough, this sherry bomb shows its power and intensity very rarely and then, very timidly. This bottling impresses with its creaminess or softness and the combination of sweetness and tart aromas. Sour cherries, leather, tobacco, chocolate, pepper, pungency and roasted aromas give this malt a special touch. Gentle and beguiling, these flatter the nose and the palate. A very successful bottling, I like it very much!

    • Nose
Alone the color triggers the "Find-me-cool-reflex" from me. Deep dark amber shimmers out of the glass and there they are, the dark berries and strong sherry aromas. Sweet roasted aromas and dark berries start the first impression, sweet orange slices and velvety peach follow the complex nose. The initially tart fruit and wood tones are creamier and softer, a touch of leather rises from sweet milk chocolate, hazelnuts are discreetly in the background. Timidly shows a sweet tobacco note, but this is at the same time again covered in creamy milk chocolate. The leather aroma is intensified and a very fine sulfur note shows up. Toasted aromas, sweet chocolate and fruit play together, here and there spicy and tart wood tones are revealed. The alcohol is amazingly mild and harmoniously tied.
    • Taste
Spicy wood elements mix briefly with sweet berries. Creamy chocolate flows over the tongue and leaves a subtle burning sharpness on the tongue. Dark berries, cocoa powder and harsh wood tones follow before the sharpness in the form of wood and black pepper flares up again briefly and spreads warm and plump on the palate. Freshly brewed espresso and creamy whole milk exude an interesting aroma, a slightly tart leather note lies discreetly in the background. Tart tobacco and sour cherries rise, followed by leather, chocolate and tobacco ...
    • Finish
Creamy and relatively mild rest the mild yet spicy sherry and woody aromas in the mouth. Here and there are again the sour cherries and bitter tobacco notes, the tart leather penetrates through the milk chocolate. The sharpness, still resting on the tongue, unfolds its voluminous power and strength again shortly before the end of the after-sound. With this combination of gentleness and a certain basic acuity, the wonderful aromas then slowly dissipate.

The sherry has swamped the distillery profile, this is just a generic heavy sherried dram, there are some decent flavours in the mix that will make it interesting for some but I find this style a little boring like similarly aged Glendronach.
I think it improves a lot with water

Unfortunately, the nose was not that complex. Taste is getting better

Deep Sherrynote, Oak then comes through slowly and then dominates
    • Taste

Fruity towards mulled wine ???? pleasant oak.
Warming and forming saliva. Chocolate note comes after. Cherry and chocolate
    • Finish
      82 82
Lightly spiced yet mild and complex.

I was scared a bit because there is too much wood effect, but I was pleasantly disappointed. Intense, but not exaggerating, like sherry too.
    • Nose
Big sherry. Citruses, acidic fruits, prune, caramels, milk chocolate, Haribo, cocoa and tobacco. Pleasant, complex nose.
    • Taste
Powerful. Big dry oak, but not too bitter or tannic. Sour cherry, forest fruits, honey and dark chocolate. Nutmeg.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy, oaky.

Simply put, these heavily sherried Glenrothes from 1997 are basically all very similar, if not pretty much the same. If you like heavy, dark, meaty sherried whiskies, than this is for you. Otherwise, stay away.
    • Nose
This shouldn't surprise you, but is a sherry bomb. Noses very dry, with room for damp wood, basil and also cocoa powder, tobacco and shoe polish. Slightly acidic too, with sour cherries and balsamic. Finally some cinnamon and milk chocolate. Especially the latter becomes more dominant after a while.
    • Taste
Rich and syrupy. Dry, but not as dry as I expected. Sour cherries and chocolate pralines, which is actually a pretty decent combination. It also has a more bitter, dark chocolate-y side. And there's some espresso here too, as well as nutmeg.
    • Finish
      Spicy, chocolate. Drying.

  18. SchottenDicht scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Tastes like a few years older, which is too much wood-influence for me personally. So if you adore old whiskies, simply add 4 points to my 86/100. Price/performance ratio isn't that good, since you can get a Parliament and Allardice for a price of this baby.
    • Nose
Pure sherry, hints of herbs, cooling menthol, old wood, leather, cacao, espresso, sweets like Haribo Gummibears. Great nose with nice variety!
    • Taste
At first a bit thin. Dry tongue. Dark fruits. Hint of sweets again. Not so much to find for me.
    • Finish
Heavy wood, bitterness kicks in immediately, burns a bit. Pretty long and warming afterwards.
