Untamed raspberry bomb with chocolate nut and meat filling. I like it.
    • Nose
Rich sweet raspberries, tobacco, creamy, almost like yoghurt, floral in the background, fruit gums, nuts, briefly flashes of marzipan, something comes across properly, fleshy, dark chocolate
    • Taste
Raspberry, almost had to think of raspberry spirit for a moment, chocolate, dark, creamy, sweet, fizzy, yoghurt fruit gum, creamy, has a lot of oomph, to chew, with the second sip also this meaty note from the nose, also slightly grassy
    • Finish
Sweet, these Katjes yoghurt gummy bears, nut, slightly chocolate, very pleasant, a little pinch of pepper

Oh yes, you immediately smell the red wine. Notes of dry red wine complemented by purple cherries, raisins and plums are the first notes I get through. Followed by oranges and redberries. More dark notes like dark chocolate and leather pop up. There are also spicy notes like cloves and a little hint of cinnamon. At the end there are notes of oak and licorice to be found.
    • Taste
      89 89
It begins fruity with notes of raisins, plums and cherries, followed by a note of oranges. A clear note of Bordeaux red wine. Next you can find notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and some cacao. And there's the dark chocolate again with a note of leather. A hint of malt. And at the end red chili peppers.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium-long and dry. Especially the dry notes are clear like cacao, cinnamon, dry red wine and some oak. With a hint of cherries on the background.

    RATING: 88pts – |87 – 89 (B+) → Great| — Always nice to have a bottle of this.
    • Nose
      88 88
The nose is very intense and voluminous with notes of red currant, cranberry, vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is beautifuly sour sweet and mouth coating with nuances of a cripsy strawberry cake and chocolate.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is quite tannic and pretty long with notes of cocoa powder, spicy oak and lots of berries.

    nose
Unfortunately, quite alky, pungent, young, wild, you could say that you want to see something positive. Not surprising considering its age, but a bit of a shame. It has delicious aromas behind the wall of alcohol, but unfortunately they are dominated by the pungent alcohol. The burgundy finish is surprisingly sweet, almost like PX sherry. Sweet honey, dark, sugared fruits and crystallized brown sugar. Caramel, some fudge with cinnamon. If you somehow fade out the alcohol, it's quite delicious. Maybe a few more years wouldn't have hurt?

    taste
This is now a rather dry wine or, to be honest, still more like a sherry finish. Tart, slightly bitter chocolate and salted caramel fudge. A hint of air from a spice shop. Unfortunately, it is still rather strong alcohol that burns a bit on the tongue and the palate and is unfortunately not very well integrated. Strong but too wild. The heavy, slightly earthy side of the wine comes through a little now and then, especially if you let the dram sit in your mouth for a while before swallowing it. Here, too, delicious and interesting flavors but unfortunately a bit too young, too wild, too alcoholic for me.

    Exit
A warming and slightly peppery layer remains in the throat for a long time, almost into the stomach. A bitter, slightly bitter taste remains in the mouth, here I feel more reminiscent of Bordeaux wine. Unfortunately, the alcohol continues to dominate too much. Spice market, cinnamon, caramel, black chocolate and some espresso show up.

    Conclusion
An actually interesting dram with an interesting wine barrel influence, but too stormy, too young, too alky.
    N-84, T-81, F-78 for unfortunately bad 81 points.

    A nice experiment from Deanston.
Impressively intense in the aroma, but on the palate it is quite alcoholic. The right drinking strength has to be found here.
    • Nose
      89 89
Diluted to 51%. Very, very intense and powerful. Cherry, vanilla, red currant, raspberry and cinnamon. Alcohol is hardly noticeable.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very powerful and, unfortunately, also very alcoholic - the young people make themselves felt a bit. A nice flavor and all the fruits of the aroma can also be found here.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long finish. Cherry, hibiscus blossom tea and red wine gum.

    it is complex and challenging
I would have expected more influence from the wine barrel
he has boom but I don't judge it; I liked the 10y with red and wine finish better
you have to be careful with water
    • Nose
Weinmff, very earthy, mineral, red compote, dark waffle, slightly cardboard becomes more, slightly nutty, red wine becomes stronger, red sweet candies, oak, slightly dark malt, vanilla is coming
with water: sweet brown sugar, more vanilla, a note that I cannot name
    • Taste
full and strong on the palate
Rubber, engine, workshop, cocoa, spicy, light oak, sweetness then tart tanine
with water: softer, tart, more cardboard
    • Finish
      medium to long
sparkling, red wine, light oak, tart
with water: currant, tart herb candy

      astringent on the cheeks

Yes, it smells and tastes a bit like wine, but in the end it is and will remain an unmistakable whole (and good) whisky. The bottom line is a great Deanston whisky, which has a slightly different taste than its relatives, which knows how to please. Just don't expect the "red wine bomb".
    • Nose
      60 60
Undiluted: Yep, that smells like red wine ^ _ ^ but (somewhat disappointing) not as strong and intense as one might imagine with "permanent storage". I already had ripening in the glass that smelled more intensely of wine than this one. However, this is in no way to be assessed as qualitatively negative, it only comes off if one has "false" hopes in advance. In addition, there is a sweet honey aroma on any fresh red berries and something sour and spicy.

Diluted to 45%: Much "vinous" than before, even if a little "watery wine" than I would like (you can't have everything: p). In addition, there is now an almost "flowery" aroma that has displaced the sweet and fruity notes, the sour and spicy parts are still there.
    • Taste
      60 60
Diluted to 45%: At first fully spicy, then after ten seconds the wine kicks in, but is quickly pushed into the background again by the spice. The second sip is sweeter and fruity than before and also a bit malty, but I don't get that much wine taste. The bottom line is that spiciness dominates, even if by and large not that strong.
    • Finish
      60 60
Diluted to 45%: A spicy, light tingling sensation remains on the outermost tip of the tongue and a warming feeling slowly pulls down the throat. The second sip also leaves a sweet character.

I have now almost reached the end of the bottle and that was a very demanding path for me. I find it very demanding, but the attention is rewarded. It got better and better over time, but remains dependent on the type of day.
    • Nose
      84 84
At first it has a strong alcoholic effect. Behind it is a deep and complex nose that demands a lot of attention and is not easy to open up. I'll give it a try: red berries. Cedar shavings and sunlit oak with some foliage. Caramel and toasted notes. It also looks a bit musty and musty. Molasses and whole cane sugar. Then fruit again. Toffee. Thyme. Malty. A little youth also resonates (lemon flour).
    • Taste
      85 85
Very punchy. Without water, it burns almost too much in my mouth. Forest honey - malty - spicy. Red wine notes (tart and sour - fruity - tannic). Oak wort. Again I think I can feel his youth. It gets pretty "hot" at the back.
    • Finish
      85 85
Spicy - tannic - fruity. Tart impression, which is well absorbed by the spicy-sweet and material-syrupy honey notes and the maltiness.

Nice, fruity and very full and strong whisky. I'm not always that enthusiastic about wine cask maturation, but in this case it worked well. It seems as it took the best parts of the wine.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very fruity, red fruits, raisins, prunes, pretty strong alcohol punch. After the first wave of fruitiness, more milkchocolate comes in. Caramel too, and some cappuccino.
    • Taste
      86 86
Intense, strong, fruity, red fruits, prunes. Chocolate again, and some organic touch.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still pretty strong, fruity, some raspberry, honey, chcocolate, prunes. Pretty long.

Lovely bright gold russet thin long legs.
Great dram similar to abunadh in every way.
Massive ethanol on the nose. Slot of spice and faint vanilla and honey. Smells like berry forest fruit granola. Red wine tannins are great.
Palate extremely spicy. So much oaky tannins. Big flavour.
    With water. Nose is tamed.
Forest fruits balsamic vinegar. Getting some farmyard and cereal. Bit of funk. Some black pepper. Can pick up the malt now.
Palate. More subtle. Still pick the oak and tannins. Red berries. Dry and spicy still. Powerful spice on the tongue.
Still very balanced. Malt and wine are in unison. Great mouth coating spice.
    Long warm finish.

  31. Vallado scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Looks much older than it actually is. Tolerates little to no water.
    • Nose
      89 89
Juicy, sweet fruits, rum raisins, dates, sugared currants, gentle spice mix (vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon), licorice, very slightly nutty-almond.
    • Taste
      88 88
Peppery at the start and then the oak seasoning comes through, but the aroma spectrum quickly tilts back into the sweet area. On the palate, it all looks more like red and slightly yellow dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, dates, apricots), the mild spices from the nose can also be found here. The mouth is covered with an oily, astringent film. Nice texture!
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish, which is never unpleasant and spicy, resonates for a long time and brings with it a nice nutty bitterness. The sweetness only expresses itself in the finish, but more would be too much at some point ...

  32. abcmeuric did not rate this whisky Member Senior

Nose : first very nutty with a bit of spices and something smoother in the distance (marzipan, honey ?). Gets bigger after some time, with the red wine aspects getting more prominent (red fruits, dark chocolate).
Mouth : feels great, salty peanuts with decaying red fruits, bitter cocoa. Clear tannins influence on the pungent side, gives a nice dry-but-oily texture. Lots of spices too, tending to take over the rest.
Finish : Very powerful, the 58% are definitely here. Warm, on spices with a smooth fudgy undernote.

With water it develops some salty caramel and liquorice notes. Spices are mellowed, allowing more space for other aromas.

    Overall very good bottle.

02/20/2019: Expecting another, there is some disappointment. The aroma with typical sherry traits is not bad, although it sometimes misses "extra" notes, such as sauerkraut. I didn't really like the transition from aroma to taste. Unbalanced.

A very fruity-intensive malt, but never too cluttered: Neither from the alcohol strength of the wine barrel flavors ago.
    • Nose

Very nice fruit, apricot, light maltiness. The 58.7% are well integrated and ensure a pleasant freshness. Something sherry. Light herbal spice, paired with pleasant oak. If you know it, notes of dry red wine will come in very easily. A very pleasant fruity-intensive nose.
    • Taste
      92 92

So, not a sherry bomb, but a wine bomb? Or rather Bombe de Bordeaux? What's certain here is we will need some water, air and patience. And then reap the rewards of this malt.
You might want to dilute it little by little, because it changes each time you do and I couldn't decide myself, whether I like it better oily, heavy and dark at nearly the full strength, or rounder, more floral and bitter after further dilution.
    • Nose
      89 89
      - A truckload of dark fruit. Cherries, black currant and forest fruit. Undiluted, it hits hard with all the young spirit in there.

      - With water, some sharpness remains, it moves a little towards compote and honey, but no lapses. This Deanston actually loves the nose and the nose loves it back.
    • Taste
      88 88
      - Thick oily texture, slow arrival, big. So far we're happy. A lot of the same as the nose plus some undertones of raspberry soda. Funny, in a good way.

      - With water, notes of dark honey and fruit preserves come to the fore. Rounder, creamy buttery an more layered.

IMO, it's interesting to see how it remains well integrated, regardless of the wine cask.
    • Finish
      82 82
Fairly short, it goes dry and bitter, which is all good in my book, however there's not much else to be found and considering the slow, big arrival and generous taste, the finish may be a bit meh... .

Not as bad as some reviews suggest. It lacks impact and the nose does not come together all that well to be honest, but with water and time it improves significantly. Fairly priced too.
    • Nose
      84 84
Quite astringent and dry at first, so I let it sit for a while before re-nosing. After 10 to 15 minutes it turns sweeter, with lots of umami aromas reminding me of thick beef gravy. A mixture of faint aniseed and licorice liqueur.
    • Taste
      86 86
Obviously wine-forward, but not as juicy-sour as I imagined. The mouthfeel is rather thin to be honest. It continues with caramelized sugar, over-brewed black tea with honey, and black currant juice.

Beautiful Deanston. No revelation but fruity sweet, with a pleasant bitterness on the finish. Strangely reminds me of my self-matured ex-Oloroso Macduff (called Deathtrap).

    Neither oaky, nor winey

You see them more often nowadays: whisky’s finished or matured on red wine casks from France. This Deanston from 2008 spent the whole 9 years on such a cask from Bordeaux and was bottled at cask strength in 2017.

The nose bursts with red fruit, caramel, sniffing tobacco and red candy. Some furniture polish and blood oranges, but cherries quickly take the lead, followed by rhubarb. Softly spiced on pepper, some nutmeg and vanilla. Surprisingly rich and complex for such a young beast and the wine does not dominate, which I find quite pleasant.

Kaboom! This is a kick to the teeth! The alcohol manifests itself prominently. Pretty piquant too. Pepper, chili, cloves, nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon. But then the explosion of fruit follows: citrus and mostly red fruit. Cherries, berries and the likes. Nicely sweet. The tannine of the cask counterfoots this, but the malt never turns oaky, nor winey. This is beautiful. And bottled at its peak, I’d say.

Only in the long finish do I get the first inkling of the drying effect, but it remains sweet enough to be pleasant throughout. It dies a spicy death.

Excellent marriage between the soft malt of Deanston and the wine cask. Top dram.

Blind tasting. A great part. For me 90+. But what can that be? Sherry keg, well over 20 years old, about 50% alcohol. A Highlander ...
The "dirty" note I felt could have led me to Deanston. And the slightly metallic one was actually a clear indication of the young age.

I've read some good feedbacks about this bottling, so it was interesting to taste it myself. The first impression wasn't good: obvious red wine with strong sulfur notes. Then sulfur fades and the nose shows other notes but added water re-activates sulfur again. The taste is better than the nose but still feels quite young. The overall impression is spoiled by sulfur, so it's definitely not my type of whisky. However, with the price of 50 euros it's rather good purchase as for limited release

The whisky has gotten good color and the former red wine is still much to feel. The red wine note is ubiquitous in syrupy form, in the nose and on the palate. Pure, I find him one track too strong and downright pushy. He is tamed by adding water, but does not make him any better. Difficult to find the right balance, here only helps experimenting with water.
In itself he is as he is ok but he misses the spicy component that might have been a good counterpoint to the fruity-sweet impact - 02.02.2019
    • Nose
Fruity-sweet red wine aroma, dark purple grape, rhubarb, blackberry, a slight alcohol note is already noticeable, roasted malt, warm bread crust, it floats a gentle sweetness in the room, sweetened cream, vanilla mousse, dark chocolate, soft cakes with cherry jelly

Very dry and fruity-sweet, astringent for a brief moment and suddenly it becomes very spicy, the sharpness proves the entire tongue, liquid black pepper, the red wine aroma is clearly noticeable, in red wine soaked peaches, block malt, also here are clearly roasted aromas At the end it becomes syrupy, hardly bitterness

This dram was blessed with a nice fruity and sweet nose, where the red wine cask influence was present, but not overly so. The palate was slightly disappointing, missing some balance and too much on the side of the wine. This might please some people, though I was not one of them.
    • Nose
      84 84
Obviously, the impression is red wine, we could have expected that, some dried red grape skin and mixed red forest fruits. Very fruity indeed! And sweet with in particular raspberry sweets. It is only slightly tannic, you do not hear me complain about that. There are some fruity toffee and freshly poured cassis. There is something Irish about the fruitiness and sweetness. There are some slightly acidic tendencies giving grapefruit juice in particular.
    • Taste
      75 75
It is slightly shy, and then I get diluted red wine, which is fighting with toffee, barley and honey. This is quite feisty, which can be explained by the high percentage of alcohol. Leading to red peppers, ginger, pickles, and pepper corns. I find also some pencil shavings.

    Aroma / Nose feeling:
Very intense and incredibly sweet. Dark honey and oak alternate, although the alcohol is noticeable but not dominant. Warm raspberries and vanilla ice cream prepare for the first sip. The aromas of various peels of citrus fruits such as tangerines and lemons blend in and give the scotch a hint of acidity.
Everything gets a little tighter with water and wet wood is added.

    Taste / mouthfeel:
The malt is so sweet and sticky. The first sip was very impressive. Of course, the vinous fruit notes are omnipresent. This Deanston is very present in the mouth. Not least because of the strong start. In addition to the fruits I notice dark chocolate, nuts, coffee powder, cinnamon and some alcohol, which is otherwise very well integrated.
With water, the acid gains, but the malt loses ...

    Finish / aftertaste / Length:
Again, the sweetness is prevalent, although the single malt is more and more dry and also slightly astringent. The finish is really long and very powerful and warming. The now slightly noticeable bitterness does not detract from the good overall impression. The scotch is a bit herbaceous in the after-taste, which I do not like so much, and here I find the disagreeable taste of Deanston 12 again, which could hitherto hide well by the Vollreifung in red wine barrel.
With water, this herbal note is enhanced.

    Overall impression / comment:
Well. Really good. In my opinion, it does not work with water at all. Since that comes to me "deanstige" too strong. My rating should show, however, that I will still like to have him from time to time in the glass. But then only pure!

Reddish gold. Thick slow legs on the glass. First impression: maybe a port wine barrel?
Clear fruit flavors in the nose. Definitely no sherry. Viney notes. Dried fruits and cooling in the nose - high alcohol content. Sweet.

Palate: Vinous fruit and immediately present oak / dark chocolate. No old whisky. After the first sip, the oak is clearly more prominent in the nose.
Long, spicy finish. Bitter chocolate remains.

With water: much softer and more fruity. Whisky wins enormously. Dried fruits now more clearly settled on the grape / wine side.

Malts from the red wine barrel often have a different fruitiness. Somehow lighter, fresher and maybe even more flowery than sherry. He seems pretty exciting. Probably through these other red wine notes. Sure it is also powerful charged but somehow I like this way well.

T he Deanston is an absolute surprise, delicious, fruity for me, sweet but with great power. He tolerates water and can deal with this super. You can really play with him and that's what I really stand for. Am thrilled. Yes, who gigantic if you give him another 3-5 years, a little rest and he would win nicely.
    • Nose
The start has already surprised me a lot, I had the feeling to have a bourbon in the glass, the wine note was not as pronounced as I thought. Rather distinct caramel, vanilla and sweetness, fruity sweetness.
I had a bit of alcohol in my nose, whisky was already in the glass for an hour, but it was still present. In addition very light furniture polish and some pepper. Then came the fruit flavors of cherry, red fruits and wine. Some wine is then there and the citrus freshness you get clearly. Exciting story, I have to say.
    • Taste
H at one of the Deanston then once in the mouth, then goes off. Formally it occupies the whole palate, seasoning, again dark red berries - sour strawberries or cherries and pepper, intensive is here almost an understatement. Of course, this is also due to the alcohol strength, but really delicious. It has a great texture and comes later with a slight dryness. The spice comes from the wood as well as the vanilla. Light tobacco and leather notes underline the complete whisky with a dark. Overall, a little more wine expected, but not bad at all. I find this incredibly exciting and intense sweet.
If you add 1-2 drops of water, the dark notes go away immediately and the berries appear clearer. He is much lovelier and still only a slight dryness. Again and again beautiful fruit compote, the pepper turns into a little chili and remains as sharpness but anything but unpleasant.
    • Finish
The departure, however, is only so mediocre, but it does not matter, then I just take another sip. The combination of permanent smell and taste makes it truly a delicious whisky.

    • Nose
A hot alcoholic start with different (candied) fruits wanting the pole position. Citrus fruit like lime and blood oranges. Red fruits like raspberry and red berries. Cadied side remains with meringues and marzipan.
    • Taste
The red and citric fruits from the nose are definitetly accompanied with vanilla, blueberrymuffins, black currant, caramels and it remains hot because of the alcohol.

On the palate, the maderized fruits stand out, as well as the sensation of alcohol very present .... it stings! then the almond a little cooked, cocoa with some cold tobacco.

Excellent Deanston, very complex. There is everything here, but nothing is exaggerated.
    • Nose
Honey, caramel, citruses, spices, lacquered wood, fruit basket, mint and wine effects.
    • Taste
Powerful and spicy. Tannic oak, coffee, black forest cake, honey, chili, black currant, cherry, raisin and tobacco.
    • Finish
Long, with cocoa, spicy oak and fruity sweetness.

Compared to the almost identical Handfilled from the distillery this one is surprising ...

    • Nose
Even a good meter away from the glass already seductive fruity-tart red wine notes flow in the direction of the nose. Closer to that it condenses on boiled red grits and strong Muscovado sugar, the alcohol provides a minty freshness. Completely untypical I have here a salty-oily spicy wort - very exciting! Then it is also back to typical Deanston with aromatic herbal honey and creme brulee with cooked pear, briefly furniture polish flashes on, and a touch of fresh black pepper tickles the nose. The strong alcohol is quite noticeable, but bearable.
    • Taste
A true Deanston: fat sweet start with spicy herbal sweets, accompanied by hot chili peppers - the alcohol shows full presence! Then ripe redcurrants and raspberries, raisins, pickled Amarena cherries and juice oranges. The honey sweetness flatters briefly, before then quickly tannins and dry oak wood provide intense roasty aromas. Dark tart cocoa, coarse tobacco and deep black espresso determine the character more and more and make this Deanston seem much older than the nine years. Although water brings a little more fruit, but also emphasizes the bitter notes.
    • Finish
In the middle-length finish, two flavors stand out above all else - caramelised fruit compote and tart wood, slightly malty sweetness and chocolate with a pinch of clove remain the longest.

    Genius Deanston!
    • Nose
Winey and chocolaty, cherries and pickled strawberries, vanilla, Black Forest cake
    • Taste
Strong and less onset, directly strong but pleasant tannins, coffee, oak, creamy with time, chocolate, again Black Forest Cherry
    • Finish
      Chocolate oak, which lingers forever

Just a quick note, that may be updated with a longer note later:
Way more edges than the Deanston 10 PX.

Strong alcohol and loses quite a lot with water. I enjoy it, not as much as I remember the 10PX to be enjoyable, but none the less 85/100 for me right now (may be updated - needed to try it quick ;-) )

Edited 9 Days later: Gave it a way better rating. The 2008 tends to need quite some "air-time". The breakthrough was when I smelled on the (empty, dry) dram from the last evening. All the red fruits hit me. After giving it some air-time and with the old dram next to it, I started to smell them in the liquid version as well. Air does this gem a huge favor - still have to do some whater experiments though.

Up to 89/90 (like it more than the PX)

Sadly I tend to split my bottles via social media, so every time I get my hands on a bottle, it's gone in the blink of an eye...

Grüße an die Pat Hock Feingeist(er) :-)
