Local spirits can offer interesting variations in flavor, this one from a micro-distillery located in the Black Forest in Germany. Yeasty, slightly dusty and obviously young, the nose opens up with citrus and sour grapes, reminding of a semidry white wine. Arriving almost like a fruit brandy, the palate is oily and bitter-dry with an astringent floral touch. Was this whisky matured in ex-wine casks? Fairly hot around the edges, the finish is short and fresh with fading sourness and hints of wood bitter. A strange malt that tastes unlike anything I've tried before.

Not something I will go wandering in search of in the Black Forest. But it didn't scare me off from trying anything else from this distillery.
I'm intrigued with these micro releases and very happy whenever I get a chance to try any of them.
This time the chance came trough a sample from Slàinte Mhath.

Sweet and slightly sour, lots of citrus.
      Very constrained young oak.
Actually towards brown cardboard box, even with the large metalic staples.
      Unfinished in some way.
      Whafts of floral scents... carnations?
    • Taste
      72 72
Arrives like a flower bed in full bloom, extremely sweet and floral. Oily texture.
Rapidly changing to more artificial, cheap after shave, and at the same time going from oily to dry.
    • Finish
      70 70
Fairly short, going more and more dry and bitter.
The empty glass has a distinct smell of yellow pea soup, that's a first in a whisky.
