That's exactly how I've always imagined it, the first 10-year-old Kilchoman: clean maritime, some fruit, neat power and smoke while harmonious and ripe. You'll be one of the big ones on Islay!
    • Nose
Pure: initially closed, dense vanilla and compact smoke. Later, pear and orange, all enjoyed on the beach next to a grill with seafood and steak to it. The anticipation of the taste increases. With water: even more fruity and maritime. Peppermint makes it summery fresh. Then later tar and cold ashes, like a cooling campfire.
    • Taste
Pure: despite cask strength creamy, honey-sweet and nicely spicy smoky onset. Salt, still warm porridge, cereal with honey. The smoke is uncannily present, is somewhere between the east and south coast to settle, in fact, slightly medical. Then come some ripe yellow fruits.
    • Finish
surprisingly long, nicely smoky, salty and clean. Benchmark Islay!

    Colour:

    White wine / ChardonnayNase:

Creamy sweet aromas of lime, yellow ripe mirabelle, vanilla and honey. Leather, damming, wet ash and orange liqueur as well as dull-smoky cereal flavors round off the pleasing nose.
    Taste:

Strong spicy and smoky-sparkling. Creamy mouthfeel with beeswax, lime, leather and a minerality of the highest quality. Add avocados, cardboard, lemon liqueur and peaty phenols in a powerful smoke.
    Finish:

Long - the grain is always more effective! Dry, peaty, smoky-salty and fruity-green with lime, grapefruit, honey and rising sweetness.
    Comment:

Overall, very smoky and consistently good. Definitely the best Kilchoman bottling to date!
    Important: takes time to develop!

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring the Kilchoman seems a little introverted. After 15 minutes, the malt opens noticeably: Mighty, ashen smoke (extinguished campfire on the beach) mixes with fresh vanilla pods and light fruits. Lemons, green apples, delicate hints of orange and fresh tangerine peel, maritime aromas and mint and oak subtle notes follow. The balance of the two columns (ashen smoke & sweet, bright fruit) is in a fascinating balance. The strong alcohol (57.4%) is beautifully integrated, only a slight "cooling" is initially perceptible in the nose.
    • Taste
Surprisingly oily, full mouthfeel, almost with a light creaminess. Very powerful, very smoky and fruity on the palate. The alcohol is also very well involved here - I do not add any water. As soon as the initially dense ash notes of the exhausted camp fire evaporate, the noticeably vanilla fruit flavors in the front of the mouth intensify. Green apples, lemons, blossom honey and oranges follow. The soft oak notes are much more flavorful. A pleasant spiciness and maritime notes complete the aromatic variety. A harmonious symbiosis of strong smoke, sweet-fruity and spicy notes!
    • Finish
Long to very long, very smoky and sweet and spicy. Intense ash notes (with a slightly medicinal impact) carry the great finish. The sweet fruit notes rear up, in constant accompaniment with spicy oak notes, which cause neither dryness nor bitterness. The finish is very warm and harmonious.

Great vanilla and sooty smoke, sea spray, pepper, oak, malt and spices.

Wow! This feels like comming home.
I like to have a few different bottles open at the same time.
One of them is always a Kilchoman. I'am a fan, I admit it.
I always thought Kilchoman is at its best when bourbon casks are mixed with a (small) percentage of sherry cask(s). This 10 years old doesn't contain any sherry casks and to my surprise it's the best Kilchoman I've had so far!
    • Nose
      90 90
Fresh bourbon casks, so lots of vanilla in the nose along with peat, bonfire and chopped wood.
    • Taste
      92 92
Less peat than the nose would suspect and after a while in the glass is seems to fade away even more, leaving salt, (a lot of) vanilla, caramel, honey and a thick oily mouth feel.
    • Finish
      90 90
salt, caramel and vanilla, icecake. Brilliant!

It's very tasty. That's how you treat your fans. Unfortunately, however, it is now only available in the secondary market. Full review (in german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/03/10/kilchoman-2007/

Tommyknocker has already got to the point. Kilchoman in top form. I have been tracking the Kilchoman bottlings from the start. This kilchoman is just perfect, that's exactly how it has to be !!!!

  8. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Nice and intense, pure Kilchoman DNA, I'm not a big supporter of the Bourbon Kilchomans now, even if that's actually the route of the distillery, but this one is very solid and is in no way inferior to many of my dear Madeira / Port / Sherry maturations.
    • Nose
Starts fresh with citrus notes, vanilla, quite clear, quite moderate in terms of smoke level, some apricot, chalky, some cinnamon that brings spice, a classic Bourbon Kilchoman, alcohol well integrated, it gets sweeter
after the first sip in the nose more cinnamon that goes hand in hand with the smoke
    • Taste
Intense, spicy, cinnamon, a lot of cinnamon, here more smoke, creamy, vanilla, very cinnamon, oak, somewhat tart sweet yellow fruit, here too dry from the mouth, one can say sweet, yellow, spicy smoke, cinnamon, also here classic Bourbon Kilchoman
    • Finish
still very cinnamon-heavy, vanilla, spicy smoke, yellow fruit, warming

The balance is good, the whisky is bright, powerful, with a cool aftertaste, slightly linear in taste.
    • Nose
      89 89
The aroma of dry wood, minerality, black tea. Genuine leather, from medicine sodium chlorine. A lot of peat for Kilhoman.
After 15 minutes ... The aroma became a little more fruity, but peat dominates. Alcohol infusion of herbs.
After 30 minutes, sherry notes were turned - compote from dried fruits, and suddenly a wonderful mixture of notes - skin and candied pears and peaches. A little iodine from Lagavulin, tobacco.
    • Taste
      88 88
A lot of peat, fruit tobacco extravaganza, prunes, a bit of a bitter oak, notes of rubber emerge distinctly in taste.
    • Finish
      90 90
The finish is long, warm, smoky-tobacco, dry oak, unsweetened dried fruit, a little salt. Very powerful !!!
