From the nose to the finish: very consistent whisky. You hardly notice that it only has 8 years on its back. Varied nose and nice and rich aroma change on the tongue. Top.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet red fruits, over which a pleasant malting note hovers. Mineral. Very fresh, with sea spray. Vanilla and some caramel. Reminds in places to the 12 CS of neighbors from Springbank. After a while come loamy soil, espresso beans, nougat chocolate, marzipan. Nice fat nose.
    • Taste
      89 89
Strong and spicy start with malt, marzipan, nougat and caramel sweets. Heather honey provides sweetness, as does the tangerines and orange slices. Almonds, hazelnuts. Nice mineral. You can literally chew the marzipan and the nougat pieces. Mild oak flavor. Raisins, gingerbread spice.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium long and slightly dry. Oak wort is gaining momentum, fine-bitter herbs are mixing in. Nevertheless, a remainder of honey, which absorbs the herbs and the oak.

A powerful and well-balanced malt. Peat and smoke, sweet pastries, tart and sour fruits like lemon and green apple. This malt offers a lot and is dominated by its complex and powerful nature. Powerful and tasty, I like it!

    22/22/22/22 (88P)
    • Nose
Shining and straw money, the malt rests in the glass. While thick drops stick to the glass wall, a maritime fragrance blows out of the glass. When Nosing then dark peat flavors rise and mix with a cold smoke, sweet vanilla and cereal flavors end in slightly caramelized sugar. Green apple and popcorn, no, rather cotton candy, form a nice flavors mix. Sweet pastries, maybe shortbread biscuits or biscuits with hail sugar, its wonderful aroma after freshly extracted from the oven biscuits, the peaty touch is still discreet in the background. The slightly mineral peat harmonizes perfectly with the sweet aromas, and from time to time, tart fruit flares up. Again and again I smell slightly burnt wood and a hint of ash.
    • Taste
Powerful yet sweet, the first sip flows over the tongue. Black pepper spreads suddenly over the tongue and dresses the entire palate with sharpness. Again lightly burned wood flavors and some ashes accentuate, citrus fruits rise from the slowly resounding sharpness. My salivation is stimulated, a pinch of salt and a little bit of ash end in a smoky peat note. Freshly grated lemon zest and dark walnuts give the taste a tart touch, spicy wood notes sparkle again and again through the harsh base note of the taste. I fancy a bit of the creamy butter biscuit and the sweet vanilla from the nose in the taste perceive.
    • Finish
Tart wood elements and mineral peat start the reverberation. The tart aromas have become darker and more intense, the citrus flavors mingle with the subtle smoke and ash aromas. Liquorice? I'm not sure. Earthy and "dirty", the malt sounds long after, the old walnuts are slowly getting rancid, a hint of wet leaves. Creamy, the various flavors rest on the palate, a subtle hint of butter slowly finishes the aftertaste.

    Nose:
Sweet malty nose. There is a hint of smoke, but not really peat. There is the obvious citrus and some orchard notes. The nose indicates clearly a high alcohol content.

    Taste:
Clearly from the Springbank stable! Love it. This is young, but quite mature in its own way. There is a sweet note, a nutty side and a clear citrus note.

    Body:
    Full and creamy

    Finish:
Long lenght. Here comes the bourbon cask influence. There is toffee, vanilla and a touch of ginger. There is also a thick creamy smokey undertone (wow that must sound weird though).

    Price:
    around €40-€45 is reasonable

    Presentation:
Don't know this was a sample

  4. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Seems more mature than last year's batch, less of that young Campbeltown rawness and most of all considerably less peaty.
    • Nose
Surprisingly unpeated at first. A very soft maltiness combined with mellow citrus notes, almost like a weizen beer. Only in second instance there's a smokiness, but more like barbecued pork and a whiff of cigar smoke than full-on peat. A peachy fruitiness as well. A little moss. Later vanilla and a sweetness like red Skittles. Even a grain-like touch of raspberry. Great nose for an 8-year-old.
    • Taste
Malty, then spicy and peaty. Dried apricot, sweet lime, vanilla, caramel, cherry and honey.
    • Finish
Now there's the peat blast. Cookie-like malt and still a bit of dried apricot.

  5. ctu scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Great value for money on Campbeltown. Less peat, but matured than prevoius batches.
    • Nose
Refined. Citruses, vanilla, red apple, orange peel and salted minerals. Over time peat and mint.
    • Taste
Wood smoke and peat. Slightly tannic oak and pepper. Honey, caramel, lemon peel, vanilla and salted minerals.
    • Finish
      Long, peaty, smoky, spicy.

What a dram to what a prize? Good!
    • Nose
Wood smoke, ash, mineral notes, a lot of vanilla, including orange juice, wet stones on the beach, apple juice comes in the end too
    • Taste
Strong vanilla on the nose, slightly peppery, citrus notes, creamy, at the same time it is always mineral and saltier, oaky spicy, very light bitterness
    • Finish
High pressure, Campbeltown in its purest form, creamy and vanilla oak, lots of warmth, the finish lasts forever

N- Meaty, coastal and malt candy, biting citrus with hearty mineral and liquorice, bright with layer of thick muddy boots, then exotic sharp soya knocking, along with peat, exhaust fume and just as it get peatier, sweet notes emerged again with notable lemon sorbet with browned nut oil, or was it a tar? Peppery sphere, complex, high strength but just wee light to be bolder. (92/23)

P- Absolutely peach-y, brown caramel, lots of liquorice, nut oil, olive brine, fume, pepper and anise, complex but harmonized. Gentle spicy coat, savoury creme biscuit. (90/22)

F- Long, smooth as silk, peach, peat, brine and liquorice. Mouth watering spicy vanilla and spicy honey. Follow up with a sip of hot coffee, perfect! (91/22)

Initially typical bourbon cask notes dominate, but the coastal and slightly dirty Kilkerran profile definitely shows up after a while. A good one, quite mature for its age!
    • Nose
      87 87
Light peat, sea spray, wet stones and a hint of tobacco on the one side. On the other side there's vanilla, banana, candied citrus fruits, hay and a certain floral note.
    • Taste
      88 88
Quite full and creamy with sweet vanilla, almonds, citrus fruits, peach and bit of honey. It's rather mineral and has a growing amount of peat on the background.
    • Finish
      89 89
Surprisingly long with waves of medium peat. It clearly shows its Campbeltown character now: briny/mineral, leather, a slight plastic offnote. Bitter mandarins are nice countered with sweet vanilla and peach candy. Very good!

  9. Ostap scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

The aroma takes time to unfold, at first it is slightly restrained by the degree. In general, a nice, meaningful and a little strict whisky.
    • Nose
      86 86
Mineral, chalk, notes of farm, fur, lemon with salt, the degree is felt and suppresses the aroma, salty cheese (cheese), animal, sour smoked peat, vanilla, milk iris, a little ash.
    • Taste
      87 87
Smoky, peppery, mineral, meaty, the degree is felt again, at first salty, gradually turns into fruit juiciness, later smoky-ash, even later the milk iris is shown.
    • Finish
      87 87
Strong, dry, mineral, long, oily, smoke, ash, smoked fish, milk iris, vanilla, oak.

Peat sometimes farmy, sometimes more mineral. Gourmet with notes of nuts and custard.
    • Taste
Beautiful texture, very spicy but soft, very consistent.

Well done without being a treasure of complexity.

Citrus, oyster, vanilla and coconut on the nose. All of the same beautifully integrated on the palate, with black pepper, chalk, citrus spice and honey on the finish. So characterful and impressive at only 8 years old (blind I would have guessed at least a teenager), and pure Campbeltown.

  18. The_Osprey scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

Kilkerran 8yo cask strength 55.7%. Matte pale golden. Very muted aroma - airy. Touch of barley. Faintest esters suggesting apple and wholegrains. Maybe needs water to bring out aromas, but I didn't add any at this stage. Taste is soft for the ABV - at least up front. Quickly builds a saltiness. Faint vanilla oak and custard creams. Oily, faintly petrol-derivative suggestions. I mean it's a cask strength peated whisky so it would be difficult to make it taste awful but it's certainly at the lower end of complexity. Has some chewiness from the density. 3.3/79. A little splash of water to 50% does little to the aroma except bring out some extra oak and biscuit over time. The water makes this a far more 'juicy' relaxed dram, with more biscuit complexity and smoke. It does benefit from a very small splash of water in my view, but maybe even less than I added. Getting it down to 52% may be about right. 3.4/81

    Notes from blind tasting.

Note: Exciting, I had it in the glass about 1 year ago and rated it considerably worse (79-81-79). Now I like it a lot better ...
    • Nose
      83 83
beautiful meadow herbs and spices, citrus fruit towards orange, distinct sweetness and in the background a touch of maritime "brawniness" and a dash of smoke
    • Taste
      85 85
Peppery start, clearly dry smoke and more maritime notes now, shell limestone, and again the herbs and spices from the nose, fresh and fruity, I'm here with oranges and something sweet that I can also find in the nose, but cannot describe. .. somehow towards Kandis, but different ...? But tasty!
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-long finish, astringent, almost ashy, that was already indicated on the palate, plus a reverberant fruitiness. Does charred fruit taste like that? :-)

From my notes below I've just had this malt in a blind sample and as I couldn't make out the colour, I have to admit that I was leaning towards a simple sherry maturation for this simple sweetness. However, I am pleased that my impressions below from two years ago are essentially confirmed and I thought so: 86 to a maximum of 87 points.
The nose is characterized by a simple sweetness and I can only guess the smoke. Over time, the vanilla note becomes clearer. 87 points
The palate is also characterized by a simple sweetness and significantly more alcohol - it is clearly too oppressive for me here. 85.5 points.
The finish is too alcoholic for me without water.
    • Nose
Simple but pleasant bourbon sweetness. Alcohol slightly perceptible. Maybe a bit unfair after the very good dram before. Some apricot, some fruit, something slightly smoky, quite pleasant and even a bit exciting for a change, but not quite my taste profile.
    • Taste
Still round, but the alcohol pushes a little more here. I can not classify this whisky well. He doesn't give me much, but he's quite nice.

N: This is really congenial whisky that no-one is going to complain about, a people-pleaser of a malt you might say. Compared to the 12yo, it’s far more youthful and peaty, those two things going hand in hand – and it’s far sweeter for sure.

T: That’s a big bold arrival, well 55.7% will give you that! Straight and simple, sweet = > peat is the name of this game with echoes of Octomore, albeit far softer and simpler. The mouthfeel is luscious if get your water-management just right.

F: I find it salivatingly milky & chocolate-y [in my mind the barley talking], the phenols giving it large to the end. This continues to appear straight as a die, except once I’d tried the whole line-up and went back to it, I found way more going on.

C: ‘The Scottish Chichibu’ jumps into my head. I stick by what I said last time: ‘an excellent 8yo though the extra 3-4 year wait is worth it’ – well worth it. Lovely whisky in its own right however.

Nose: Honeydew melon, old cigar box, fresh cut grass, funky vanilla, raw honey, molasses, cinnamon, cayenne pepper flakes.

Palate: Sweet lemon, honeydew melon, sour apple, tree sap, dry malt, and a soft background of smoke.

Finish: Dried apricot, rhubarb pie, bitter lemon, bitter oak, cedar, and ashy smoke.

Score: B+ (86 if you must); Nose>palate>finish. It’s a lovely whisky, but the star has fallen a bit from my beloved Work In Progress (#7 cask strength bourbon wood).

    • Nose
Smoked meat, clean peat. I would say it is a refill sherry cask, based on the nose alone. Saturated, aromatic vegetal notes.
    • Taste
Savoury peat. No dirty, earthy undertones. Smoky, luscious bitterness on the sides. Very drinkable even neat. It really shines on the palate with the umami. With water, a little more bitterness. It takes water quiet well, but the complex savouriness subsides a little.
    • Finish
The finish is holding the aromas quiet well here. Longish

Tasted with friends in a session including three Kilkerran 08 year old Cask Strength.

1.- 56.2% bottled 2017. Quite clean and compact. Some smoke. Nice solid dram. 85

    2. - 55.7% bottled 2017. Smoke and dirtiness are more present, providing a more complex and rounded sensation. 87

    3. - 56.5% bottled 2018. Very smooth. Smoked mixed with sweet nuts and whipped cream. Richer than the others. The winner of the session. 88

It seems the longer Kilkerran works, the better quality we will get. Hope they continue like this.

Some sweet smoke, spicy and fruity, prunes, oranges and some grassy notes. Then some sweet, honey and vanilla, raspberry, later on some tobacco.
    • Taste
      87 87
Strong, pepper, sweet and spicy. Honey and oranges again, full taste, intense.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still some pepper, strong, a bit more smoke now, tobacco. Some sweetness remains, long finish where tobacco lingers in the mouth.

I tried another CS batch bottled earlier in 2017 [Score: 86]. This is now almost 9 years old and 80% bourbon-matured.

N: Hugely likeable. The distillery profile is rather similar to the 12yo, though this is evidently younger and sweeter with leathery icecream, icing cream & sugar candy notes. With the malty farmy>dunnage tones, there appears to be a little more peat than the 12yo.
T: I love this farmy-smokey profile with an almost mineral/metallic austere edge.
F: Follows on through nicely from the palate.
C: An excellent 8yo though the extra 3/4 year wait is worth it.

    BLIND TASTING

N: light smoke, vanilla wafers, honey, carrots, coconut, exotic and slightly sour
G: Peppery, vanilla-sweet, minimal smoke, coconut,
A: long, sweet. subtly bitter and something dirty, which gives a nice contrast at the end
Conclusion: harmonious, very good and beautiful start to the pre-Christmas period, especially the nose is fantastic. The finish could be longer and the taste more complex.

Tip: Highland Park from its 1st fill bourbon barrel. 52%. Age 16 years

Very, very good and absolutely no disappointment this time, despite the high expectations. I think this certainly adds something different to their 12-year-old standard bottling, with a higher degree of sweetness and a slightly higher amount of peat.
    • Nose
      89 89
A tropical fruity start with oranges, papaya and tangerines, followed by moderate sense of peat. My first impression is that it is quite different from the last batch, but since I have nothing left from bath 1, I have to do it from memory. It could be a cross of those Irish fruity independent bottlings with the typical Campbeltown character. The development goes into greasy candies (like someone dropped a sweet on the ground of an automobile repair shop, an increased earthiness, floral notes (honey suckle), citrus rasp and a hint of liquorice. The peat smoke is always there to supplement the others.
    • Taste
      89 89
owerful, complex and upfront peat. There is more energy compared to the nose, and the peat is on top now. Beautifully dirty, greasy and oily and a sense of high quality rum (maybe Bellevue). There are kippers, orange liquor, graphite, and the right amount of dirty fudge. These are supplemented with herbal notes. An almost perfect balance is achieved with the bourbon cask sweetness perfectly integrated into Kilkerran’s spirit. In addition, there is a bitter edge to counter the sweetness to make it even more interesting.

      88 88
      More from the above.

He is strong and sometimes better and sometimes less well depending on the shape of the day
    • Nose
China oil, ethereal ... I do not have any more
    • Taste
Sweet, strong and slightly smoky. He also has good sulfur.
    • Finish
      Clear tobacco ... full-bodied

This one is surprisingly gentle for such a young age with quite a strong ABV. It acts more mature then it is.
    • Nose
Smoke, not peat but more like BBQ. Quite meaty, something like smoked ham or so. Very soft. Furthermore i smell candy, sweet fruit candy. Sugary. There quite a lot of malt notes in there. Also some vanilla.
    • Taste
Very creamy. Surprisingly soft without water. Some sour notes in there. Lemon peel, Smoked ham. Some sweet watery fruits. Someting like ripe melons.
    • Finish
It remains soft, gentle and very accessible. Freshly baked cake, grains. some buttery notes. The buttery note continues. Ends grainy with a hint of bourbon wood.

Very interesting and mature for a 8-year-old. From neat to diluted, the flavor profile changes quite a bit.
    • Nose
Barley sweetness, lemon, chalk, some mint and slight smokiness.
    • Taste
Candied lemons, soft sootiness, toasted marshmellows and peppery ginger.
    • Finish
Zesty citrus, saltiness and white pepper.

A really great Kilkerran, does not quite reach the fullness of the 12er standard for me, but is still incredibly delicious and will certainly find its way back into my closet ...
    • Nose
Vanilla sweetness, citrus fruits, cereals, white chocolate - a young, very harmonious fruity-sweet bourbon nose, no trace of alcohol, but surprisingly not of smoke
    • Taste
Oha, strong onset, beautiful oily, maritime freshness, malt sweetness, salt, here then light smoke, dry oak
    • Finish
Mhhh, that sounds wonderfully round and balanced between fruity vanilla sweetness and dry oak with a slightly smoldering smoke, great

Overall very solid campeltown dram which is about as complex as an 8-year old whisky can be.

    88/100

    A&A
    • Nose
White pepper, mint, pears, citrus fruits, peaches, rhubarb and a hint of a smoky fireside. Water brings out freshly cut grass and various herbs, as well as unripe banana.
    • Taste
On the palate, it is a balance of sourness and saltiness, with a little bitter. A little spirity, but nowhere close to what you expect from a 55.7% whisky. Light and creamy texture. Delicious salted and roasted cashews and peanuts. Very peppery development. Fresh milk chocolate becomes very apparent about 15 minutes into the dram.
    • Finish
Medium in length, a very dry, almost coarse aftertaste. Dried strawberry, fruit peel and intense honey mixed in an almost saline solution.
