Whisky Reviews for Glenlochy 1974 SV

Tried this head to head with
Glenugie 1973 27 year SV WB ID 3383
Glenury Royal 1973 SV 31 year WB ID 11038

I hold Glenugie, Glenlochy & Glenury in the same reverence as I do with the best Brora, I love all of them and will never turn a chance down to taste them.

Glenlochy is not as consistent as Glenugie & Glenury but the best from all 3 has many similarities in style, fruitiness and balance.

This was a mini H2H but a very enjoyable one and this is the pecking order but very little in it 91-93 points.

    1 - Glenugie
    2 - Glenlochy
    3 - Glenury

All 3 are awesome with a classic stewed fruit nose, and great balance, the sort of whisky I could drink all day.

There are very few modern whiskies that can get close to matching this sort of profile.

Glenlochy at its best, nothing else to say.
    • Nose
      91 91
The nose is a little shy first but I detect cereal notes mixed with some distant honey and white fruits but the fruit is hidden.
After a few minutes a bubble gum note emerges, a slight medicinal note, hints of peat.
Reminds me of some better Strathmill bottlings, it improves with time in the glass.
    • Taste
      93 93
Sweet , fruity, peppery with some sherbet fizz ands then a really nice clotted cream angle.
Lovely sweetness that is pegged back a little by wafer notes, lovely pineapple boiled sweet note on this one.
    • Finish
      92 92
Medium finish remaining fruity with a slight pastry note and apple skins.

Lagavulinfan you say this is as good as a 40 year Rosebank you had 10 years ago. I am a Rosebank fan, which bottling was it, out of interest?

  4. Lagavullinfan scored this whisky 96 points Newbie

Haven't been closer to perfection since a 40 year old rosebank 10 years ago.

Wauw! Close to the perfect whisky!
