Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain 2001 Cl

27 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.59 points

  1. Dre73 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Beautiful whisky, clear sherrycask influences, but again not very dominant (like with real 'sherry bombs'). Beautiful in balance in both smell, taste and finish.
    • Nose
Full smell, red fruit, raisins, honey, leather. Beautiful sherry influences. Floral too.
    • Taste
Very lightly stimulating, red fruit and raisins again. Also orange. And sweet, honey. Nice full flavor.
    • Finish
Slightly more pepper now, but not disturbing. Sturdy, warming and long. Red fruit and honey.

A nice sherry bunna, fruity than the standard 12, but unfortunately a bit expensive. Reminds a bit of WID: 99950 which was half the age but half the price. Quite a few reviews seem to have a NL bonus;)
    • Nose
      87 87
hs305 would find sulfur, I find it just sweet and spicy when undiluted.
With a little water a lot of red gummy bears. Delicious!
    • Taste
      88 88
Oily and sweet, then a very strong start, but without burning.
With more time and a little H20, then a veritable red fruit jelly bomb!
    • Finish
      85 85
As clean as a whistle, Ralfy would say ...
Neither really long nor a lot of aromas, I say.

Great bunna, I really like the combination of spice and sweetness, very tasty
    • Nose
nice subtle smoky citrus note, transitioning into spicy, slightly sweet aromas, raisins come, the alcohol is very well integrated
    • Taste
strong spicy start, transitioning into a spicy sweetness with a lot of fruit. Later getting a little oily. Nice mouthfeel
    • Finish
Very aromatic long finish, again the spicy sweetness with the great fruit aromas.

A very deserving Bunna release! As people said before, balance indeed is the word here. Clear sherry but the earthy, raw bunna is still there. Great stuff!
Combine this with a piece of English Stilton, fantastic!
    • Nose
Beautiful sherry matured nose. It’s sweet and fresh with orangepeel, chocolate and raisins combined with the earthy, raw Bunna character full of dried fruit and hints of leather. After a while herbal notes and a floral character reveal. Very refined and distinctive. For the nose no water is needed. I like it the way it is.
    • Taste
Impressive thick and oily body. Well done! Very friendly on the palate with dried fruits, orange, sweetened malt and again a very herbal and floral twist. Also for the taste, no water is needed for me. Taste is a logical but very good continuation of the nose. High level stuff.
    • Finish
Long finish. It’s actually rather fruity in the finish in a ripe fruity way. Furthermore I get a hint of cocoa and a hint of dried wood.

Good heavy sherry bomb. Not that you will get clear Bunna notes, but also not a overpowering sherry bomb.
    Well balanced.
    • Nose
      87 87
Good sherry influences. A little spicy as well. Wet leather, shoe polish and dried red fruits. There is a little dirty sidenote, but nothing to worry.
With water: It opens up better. The dirty side note is gone.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sweet and sherry notes dominate. After a few seconds you will get some wood notes.
With water: more balanced. There is a more mild sherryprofile.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long length. Full on the sherry. But it is different as the modern 5yo dark brown sherry bombs. A little tannins after half a minute, again nothing to worry.
With water: Not much of a change.

Good stuff from Claxton's, and certainly not a dime a dozen. If it wasn't for the sulphur notes (which I'm fairly sensitive too), I would've rated this a tad higher.
    • Nose
Rich and powerful, but not intrusive, there's plenty of warming sherry notes. Think raisins and honey, as well as cocoa powder and dark chocolate, and leather. It has something slightly farm-y about it, with a touch of aceto balsamico to boot, ensuring this is not your average sherry matured whisky. By the way, there's a bit of sulphur (somewhat metallic) here.
    • Taste
Great oily texture, while slightly drying as well. Plenty of cocoa powder again, as well as red grapes and cranberries, and balsamic. There's a whisper of gunpowder, accompanied by subtle spices, mainly cracked black peppercorns.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, chocolate. Medium in length.

An otherwise satisfyingly sherried Bunna hobbled by a sulphuric cask.
    • Nose
      84 84
Green pepper, red berries, caramel. Acidic, fruity, slightly yeasty and with a clearly detectable dose of sulphur (matchstick heads, firework fuses).
    • Taste
      85 85
Nicely thick and oily mouthfeel. Very sweet and rich, with chocolate, wild honey, fig jam, and salted caramel butter (there's the maritime Bunna DNA). Sadly, the sulphur also translates onto the palate, producing some rubbery off-notes.
    • Finish
      84 84
Salty-sweet, with flavors of liquorice and caramel-filled chocolate. Small flashes of fruity acidity and, alas, still some sulphur.

It needs a lot of air and some water for me, then it becomes much milder and better.
    Without water 87 points.
    • Nose
      87 87
slight sulfur note that doesn't bother me personally, sherry, sweet, spicy, malt, nutmeg, white pepper, a little sour cucumber, a little salt
    • Taste
      86 86
sweet, spicy, clear tannins, a bit bitter, nutty, dried apricots. Mild and sweeter with water
    • Finish
      87 87
      long, licorice, some peppermint
