Whisky Reviews for Hedonism Maximus CB

Nose: Such sweet vanilla and coconut. I’d actually guess this was a bourbon, based on first nosing. A lot of oak…a lot of spice. Cinnamon and nutmeg over toasted marshmallow. Distant hint of cherry lip balm…like the smell you cling to as she’s walking away. A touch of orange, tangerine with white chocolate and faint smoke. Frothy, creamy, buttery toffee foam.

Palate: Waxy, spicy, oaky bourbon. It’s not bourbon, of course, but that would be my first guess. Very sweet, but incredibly well-composed. Barfi (Indian sweets). More spice…more oak. Touch of rosewater.

Thoughts: Another one of the high-end compass box releases that is unequivocally worth your hard-earned dollars. I believe I’ve referred to CB mainman, John Glaser, as an alchemist at some point in the past. Case in point.

A special new reserve bottling of Compass Box`s fabulous grain whisky, Hedonism Maximus is composed of a 42 yo Invergordon (70%), with the remainder being a 29 yo Carsebridge, both of which were matured in first-fill ex-bourbon American oak. Fabulous, limited, and unlikely to last long.

Tonight we [Whiskyshare’s first meet], gave this Hedonism “Maximus’ from Compass Box WB a run for it’s money. It’s comprised of a 42yo Invergordon [70%], the remainder being a 29yo Carsebridge, both of which were matured in first-fill ex-bourbon. We began with these younger [though really not young], appetisers WB & WB.
N: Similar to the Cameronbridge with it's character, fruitiness and oak-to-malt levels. Lovely sugars. Wheat<corn.
T: Good spirit [as always from CB], with keen and supportive oak. Well balanced, well composed.
F: Light finish with some caramel.
C: It’s a very fine and competent dram [if a little straight ahead], with that signature CB style. Tonight however it was overshadowed by the Cameronbridge.

An older, more exotic expression of Hedonism, consisting of 42 year old

Invergordon and 29 year old Cameron Bridge grain whiskies. Straw gold

color. This is richer and cleaner than most other grain whisky

offerings, which are often too thin and overweight with dry oak. Like

many older grain whiskies, creamy vanilla, coconut custard, and a

variety of tropical fruits abound. Additional notes of toasted

marshmallow, caramelized apricot, golden raisin, and a gentle dried

spice finish add complexity. Surely one of the better examples of this

    rather eccentric category.
