    nice fruity profile throughout.
In the nose, however, the alcohol comes through quite strongly after a while.
It tolerates water and rewards it with more intense fruity aromas while the alcohol is reduced. Delicious.

    A wonderful aroma!
    old and mature,
    heavy and strong!

    An intense sherry nose,
    but also heavy alcohol.
In addition, tart, somewhat bitter wood notes.
This is arguably the A'bunadhs' recipe for success.

Oh, interestingly enough, it is fruitier in the mouth than the aroma would suggest.
    But it's a force.
Will certainly take a drop of water.

    Very nice batch!

    [Blind tasting notes]

Guess: A well-sherried cask-strength OB (Glengoyne, Glenrothes, Tamdhu, Aberlour, Macallan or the like).
    • Nose
      87 87
Dominated by (modern) sherry and a marzipan-like, active American oak influence, but there’s a depth (and probably a respectable age statement) to it as well as some intriguing floral notes. Herbal and savory-sweet, with wild honey and bone broth. Very lively in the glass, develops well.
    • Taste
      84 84
Creamy and full, with bucketloads of Oloroso and baking spices. Not as intriguing as the nose, though. Seems younger and hotter on the palate. Tasty, but kind of a one-trick pony.
    • Finish
      83 83
Doesn’t seem too old in the finish either, I’d be surprised if this cracks the 20-year mark. Okay, but nondescript, with the focus on the (very contemporary, active) US oak.

In two words: Fantastic stuff. I have always listened that this single malt was good, but still I really was surprised with the good quality of this Aberlour A’Bunadh, a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It is presented at 60,8% ABV, a Cask Strength ABV and has stated in the label that it is Non Chill-Filtered. Furthermore it shows a beautifull amber color.

No doubts, it is a really very nice NAS, a really gem, perhaps the best Sherry Bomb I tasted until now. I will let this one take some air, breathe, to see if it will improve over the next weeks.
    • Nose
The nose is very impressive, we are immediately surrounded by dark chocolate, dried fruits, plums, coffee and oak notes. After 2 full teaspoons of water - yes it can take them, it is 60,8% - besides the notes felt previously, the chocolate and dried fruits stand out, as also some oranges notes.
    • Taste
On the palate, neat, the first impression is punchy, with a nice strong retro nasal, with a lot of sweetness. The strong arrival brings almonds, dried fruits, raisins and plums, then spices and a bit peppery. The water adds more sweet notes, oranges and prunes marmalades, but always surrounded by this nice dark chocolat.
    • Finish
The finish is long, long, long and lingering, with sweet dried fruits notes and again lots of chocolate….

A good malt. It not only offers sherry, but also tart notes such as wood, tobacco and herbs.
With water it becomes more sherry and a little less heavy.

For the price you can't really complain. It may not necessarily be a large bottle, but it can also go into the glass again.

    Notes from a blind tasting:

    First impression:
    Definitely my booty scheme :)

    Nose:
Pure sherry! Raisins, prunes, a hint of cinnamon and cloves
    The alcohol is barely noticeable.

    Taste:
Now comes the sharp start, which fades away slightly peppery. In between, saliva production is in full swing. Sweet fruit notes from the nose spread around the mouth and slowly migrate to the palate. Simply great!

    finish:
The sweetness lingers a bit to make room for the oak after a medium time.

    Conclusion:
Excellent ending of the day. Alcoholically, we are back in 55% regions.

A great and intense sherry bomb. This bottling is dominated by sun-ripened orange, raisins, cinnamon, chocolate and sugar. The addition of water is useful in my opinion, this is the extremely high alcohol defused and also the malt gains in creaminess and harmony. A great bottling, I like it very much!

    22/23/22/22 (89P)
    • Nose
      88 88
Reddish copper shines from the Premium Snifter while lumbering dark sherry aromas lift up. Intense orange aroma dominates the first impression, zests and abrasion of old oranges fall into creamy milk chocolate, velvety vineyard peach and caramelized sugar are added. Raisins and dried dates, sour cherries and blackberries, plus sweet toffee and caramel. I perceive a minimal musty and musty scent, then immediately the full-bodied and voluminous sherry aroma is on the spot again. Started by the full "Sherrydröhnung" the nose I would like to try the Malt immediately and look forward to the first sip.
    • Taste
      88 88
Dark sherry aromas and an extremely high alcohol content beat mercilessly on the palate and on the tongue, dried berries and dark oranges are immediately mixed with spicy wood tones and a pinch of cinnamon. Slowly, the alcohol evaporates and tart, slightly dry wood elements stick to the palate. I add some water. The nose opens, cinnamon and slight mildew now dominate the nose, the taste is the malt much milder and creamier, it also gains sweetness. Toffee, milk chocolate, caramelized sugar, oranges, cherries, cinnamon, raisins and peaches delight the palate and whet your appetite for more.
    • Finish
      88 88
The aftertaste is due to the addition of water relatively mild and creamy. Cinnamon and sugar play together, a strange spice note comes gradually to light. Raisins, hints of hazelnuts and walnuts stick creamy on the palate and sound relatively quick again. Chubby warmth floods the palate for the last time, then the reverberation goes away and leaves a creamy nut note.

    BLIND TASTING
N: Popcorn, sherry fruits behind a herbal note, for me at first very closed. With time he opens up more. The dark fruits include warm milk, mountain cheese and apple compote.
M: Quite sweet, milk chocolate, oak spice, some pepperiness on the tip of the tongue. The sherry fits in quite well and does not dominate. No sulfur, no moderation
A: Strong finish, warming, long sweet, at the end comes a little salty salt
Conclusion: In the aroma it is still quite closed, in the mouth and finish, however, it unfolds its full splendor. Maybe he is just a tiny tick too sharp. Tip: Glenfarclas, maybe a younger Family Cask? about 55% vol. Good! 88 points

N: I smell lovely oily nutty husky sherry casks.
T: Rather spirity neat. I poured in a whole heap of water with no detrimental effects whatsoever. The trick is adding enough to extract the underlying waxy herbal character.
F: Not overly complex but it’s a good hummer.
C: A slugger really, and a good ‘un.

First time trying A'bunadh, was tempted by the supermarket deal and the fine reputation and I'm glad I did. Others should try it too!
    • Nose
      65 65
Being cask strength there is a need to see past the alcohol vapour and some high paint-like notes, but then there are soft raisins, on a floral, grassy background.
    • Taste
      85 85
Without water the pepper is too much for my palette, a dash of water makes the honey, fig and hint of rose accessible

Powerful, intense sherry whisky that can tolerate water in any case. Then he opens up and dominates fruity-chocolaty notes. The oak note could be a bit more discreet and the malt matured, but alright. In terms of PLV a great sherry malt.

mildew, cooked fruit, madérisés, intense wood and a little cocoa
spices also back and a little vanilla!
    • Taste
chocolate sensation, malty, spices raised, the fruits are more cooked and macerated, there is a vinous sensation too, there is a return toasted with the wood, and also smoke, but light!
the return on the palate on the heat of alcohol, various herbs, dark chocolate and vanilla
    • Finish

identical scents, slight amalgamation at the end

  44. hs305 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

[September, 2018] At the moment I sit at the top of the waterfall near the water source of Aberlour distillery and enjoy a dram of their most recent 20-years old distillery only release (59.1% abv, not on WB yet) ...and I cannot image any nicer spot where I want to be right now. The dram is good (just lightly sulphurous), the water is singing and my dog lies relaxed at my feet. So I take the chance to add a tasting note of this a'bunadh from yesternight...

...what is a fine and flawless whisky but unfortunately I do not like its heavy herbal-driven profile. Nonetheless I can imagine that connoisseurs with a herbal preference will enjoy this very much!
    • Nose
      85 85
The nose offers a modern herbal-driven sherry profile that is very clean but not sherry sweet at all. Water opens it up and releases more sherry-induced fruits, nuts and raisins.
    • Taste
      84 84
The palate is rather closed when neat on mainly herbal sherry notes. Water releases even more herbs, some dark chocolate, tobacco and spices.
    • Finish
      84 84
The initial mouthfeel is warming, a little hot due to the high abv and not very much coating but there are no distracting moments either. The finish is rather short with more tobacco notes and a drying end (cold ashes).

  45. SilentBeing scored this whisky 88 points Member Senior

My first batch of the A’Bunadh, but definitely not my last. Cannot compare it to other batches, but clearly the better choice compared to the 18 Year Old, both in terms of price and experience. An excellent whisky indeed.
    • Nose
Intensely sherried. Plenty of orange zest, raisins, prunes and chocolate. The sweetness is held in check by notes of balsamic vinegar, ginger and wet tobacco leaves.
    • Taste
The arrival is sweeter than the nose suggests. Chewy toffee, intense orange, raisins and strawberry with plenty of dark chocolate and hints of cinnamon. Towards the finish it turns sharper and slightly bitter with notes of English breakfast tea and pickled ginger.
    • Finish
Long and initially sweet with continuing notes of orange, dark chocolate and cinnamon. The pickled ginger comes to the forefront shortly and then the finish fades on a note of more chocolate.
