Whisky Reviews for Ballechin 2007 SV

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.13 points

  1. Gloin scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

    The smell is pleasant, you just can not keep your nose too deep into the glass, because then comes through the high alcohol content and stings. The sweetness is more reminiscent of a port than a sherry ripening.
    The taste and the finish provide what the nose was expecting. The whisky tastes good, but everything is a bit superficial and not very complex. A whisky to drink and enjoy on the side. For the concentrated enjoyment maybe a little too easy.
    • Nose
      sweet smoke, raspberry, barbeque sauce, tobacco, overripe peach, bacon
    • Taste
      After a while, a light burning sensation sets in on the tongue, very sweet, again raspberry, some orange, the smoke retreats slightly, only a little wood
    • Finish
      In the finish, the smoke comes back a little, coupled with gentle oak, it stays sweet, the fruit is now something more in the direction of cherry, a touch of chocolate, caramel

    Just 10 years old and then with 60.4% both in the nose and on the tongue and on the finish such a rich selection of flavors - and so a tasty smoke - and he is not even from Islay ...
    • Nose

      Clear chocolate note, behind something pleasantly burning. Leaves? Brushwood? In any case, very tasty. A bit greasy. Seasoning of grated nutmeg and a mild herbal mixture. Raisins, dried dates and figs.
    • Taste
      89 89
      Even undiluted, he runs very smooth and without any tips over the tongue. Slightly dry, greasy-fruity smoke. Leather, tobacco leaves, wet leaves, moist clay soil, espresso beans, Scho-Ka-Kola, licorice sticks. Mildly spicy, and these (spices) in good conjunction with the other flavors.
    • Finish
      88 88
      Medium long, slightly dry, fruity-greasy smoke, freshly brewed espresso, caramel, vanilla, raisins, a little grape must.

    Outstanding Ballechin that makes me long for a second glass. Seducer!
    • Nose
      Oh, my! Wonderfully dark and sweet on a truckload of toffee. Werther’s Originals. But wrapped in a blanket of smoke. Mokatine. Arabian coffee. Some raisins and tobacco, but mostly all kinds of variations on caramel. For the sweet tooth among us (like me).
    • Taste
      Despite the high ABV, this arrives without scorching your tongue. While the saliva glands to into overdrive, I taste a lot of citrus fruit and apricots, dades and oranges. The caramel rears its sweet head. And spicy! Nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. All wonderfully dark and sweet, with underlying smoke. The smoke becomes more intense with every sip. It is even a bit umami. Roast beef? Wonderful.
    • Finish
      The finish is longer than an episode of Temptation Island and futhermore a lot more interesting and sexy.

    I would have scored this slightly higher if i wasn't even more impressed by the version for TASTTOE (finished on hampden rum barrel).
    this last one was slightly more dusty (in a good way) and therefore gave this Ballechin a more clean profile for me. But in all, I'm very satisfied with this bottling!

    Single cask bottling; 10 years refill Sherry Butt; very well!
    [Color gold;
    • Nose

    • Taste
      diluted: intensive onset; a lot of sherry, berries, caramel, creamy, fine smoke, ashes, some oak, full-bodied, complex;
    • Finish
      medium length with sherry and caramel;

    Colour: dark amber.
    Nose: wet wood, light peated smoke, sweet fruits, light fruit rottenness, furniture varnish, muffins, red apples, oak and spices.
    Mouth: light peated smoke, dried fruits, dryness, pepper and chocolate.
    Finish: long, peaty and sweet with spices, dust, sweet fruits, raisin, cacao and chocolate notes.
    Ballechin is a very good balanced, interesting and tasty whisky. I gave 88 points.
