Whisky Reviews for The Westfalian 2013

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.14 points

    • Nose
Complex, lots of caramel, creme hull, but also peat smoke, sour gummy bears, citrus zests, mint, oak and maybe even a trace of salt. Overall, very well put together.
With water: sweet, fruity, biscuit tart with fresh fruits, gummy bears and in the distance a leaf fire.
    • Taste
Firm start with oak, strong peat flavors, nuts and a light sherry note. Then it becomes very juicy after steamed dried fruit, where he retains the pithy peatiness.
With water: Light smoke, blood oranges, grilled pears and figs.
    • Finish
Warming peat smoke, long and spicy.

The smell is unusual and not quite whiskytypisch, but not quite pleasant. But something bothers me about it without me naming it. The taste confirms the impression of the nose: pleasant, but alien to a whisky. The finish is more classic, but a bit monotonous. The overall package is delicious.

    blind tasting
    • Nose
slightly alcoholic, but not pungent, but that vanishes after a moment, followed by sweet cider, some wild strawberry, slightly lemon, sorrel, rotten wood, Ahoi Brause woodruff, all sweetish
    • Taste
Gentle approach, but behind which hides a tremendous power, like a dwarf with the shadow of a giant, the body is wonderfully soft and creamy, peach, sweet and overripe, as a counterpoint to acid filter coffee, a little wood, but hardly bitterness
    • Finish
Warm finish with some wood, now with a slight bitterness, unfortunately mixed with a delicate alcoholic notes, dark caramel, medium long

an interesting, a dirty whisky. Rarely drunk such a sour malt. But it works. Not easy, but it works. Something exciting from Germany. Excellent! ... but the price ... well.
    • Nose
I have smoke immediately in my nose, a mixture of peat and wood smoke. In addition to a little sherry, but rather something Asian, soy sauce, Szechuan pepper, subtly fruity, sweet and sour oak. It becomes a little sweeter, more harmonious with water
    • Taste
the full board. Lots of Akohol, peat, citrus, really sour, oak and spices. With water more pleasing, but the shot lemon is still amazing.
    • Finish
Pepper, smoke, bitter oak, menthol. With water also a musty, slightly gammlige Sherrysüße.

Fairly impressed with this one. Nice woodsmoke & leathery sherry combination, just a little sour around the edges. Needs a lot of water to open up. For me however the best german whisky I have tasted so far. Well done!

Good, not more, but certainly not less.
Only the start is not my thing, because it really takes a lot of time and at best some water, until it comes in terms of taste in reasonable ways. Otherwise, but fine orange notes, beautiful raisin, with some tropical fruit on the finish - to this end, a really solid "fabric".
The thing that keeps me from buying but the 89 Euronen for a half liter bottle but athletic price.
Especially when you consider that the only exotic or special, what this malt has, the country of origin is Germany, if Dland can still be described as exotic, with the large number and quantity of whiskys that have already been produced in this country.
