I am not opposed to *some sulphur, but when it distracts from the whisky itself, it is then a problem. That is the case here. It’s there, it’s hard to get past and comes across as a bit of a hot mess. Would guess closer to 10 years old. More sour and acidic as well. Water is obligatory.

Edit: Kept this sealed for 6 months and now coming back it is still laughable how sulphured this is. Probably the most sulphured dram I’ve ever had. I’ll save most of it as an education, which is important, but hell no it’s not worth the money to me, and Laphroaig is one of my favourite distilleries. I’m actually shocked this is reviewed as high as it is.

Sulphur (gunpowder, spent matches, scorched earth) rubber, hot oil, gravel, burnt plastic, minerals, tar, asphalt, chlorine. Sulphur, sulphur sulphur..
    • Taste

Sulphur (matchsticks, burnt plastic, gunsmoke) Swedish berries, smoke, lime, tire fire.

It’s frankly impressive how much the sulphur domintes, I’ve never seen the likes. Burnt plastic, spent matches, dry, raspberry jam on toast, sour keys, peanut skins, burnt popcorn

A nice strong Laphroaig, with a lot of smoke and beautiful old oak. The right mix of fruit, if you give him enough time in the glass

the alcohol stings a bit in the nose, then neat medical smoke, subtle sherry notes, slightly spicy. I let it breathe first.

Yes, it was worth the wait. The alcohol is not so present anymore. The smoke is still superimposed there but not everything, plus raisins and some dark fruits, a little damp soil is also there.
    • Taste
      92 92
Strong onset with beautiful medicinal smoke, with dried apricots and figs, tobacco, old wood. He is also amazingly good!

It becomes rounder and smoother with water. The smoke no longer dominates the taste so much, but still quite strong and full-bodied. Now and then a little bit of honey is flashing too.
    • Finish
      90 90
The smoke remains for a very long time, the fruits and the beautiful oak come along and have a long lasting effect.

What a Laphroaig! Complex nose, which changes again and again, one hardly wants to stop sniffing. In the mouth he needs water, otherwise dullness and the alcohol drowns out the rest of the aromas.
Certainly no malt for every day, this whisky challenges the connoisseur, and can not be drunk "on the side".

First nose strong with typical Laphroaig smoke, strong fresh alcoholic, mineral. After the nose got used to it: sherry, some raisins, rubbed gum, herbs (which I can not define).
After a long time in the glass (about 30 minutes): the smoke recedes clearly, the gum note disappears.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very sharp start. Medicinal and dry smoke, dried fruit, sherry and yellowed leather, slightly sweet, with oak spice in the background.
With water: significantly milder, less smoke, but still strong enough.
    • Finish
      90 90
Pretty long. Warming with dried fruits and sherry, the smoke clothes the mouth, oak without bitter.

Extremely great Laphroaig .. I like it very much
    • Nose
First way: After adding a relatively large amount of water but the malt is good
A wonderful sherrynase, dark fruit, spicy. The smoke is pretty much gone. Kräuterig, Gewüre, oak but very pleasant without it gets woody.
    • Taste
The nose continues. Mighty cheers, despite the many water. Sherrylastig and complex. And suddenly the Laphroaig is back with everything that goes with it. Smoke, iodine, medicated, gauze bandage. Entirely interwoven with the dark fruits.
    • Finish
Ultra long, warming, the mouth is covered with smoke, sweetness, and egg. Never bitter.

If you could drink such a whisky every day ... No, better not ... 170 € is already a lot of gravel, but shared that is fine. Disposal> nose> mouth
    • Nose
Burnt campfire, chamomile, prunes, with water more chamomile, rosemary, thyme, old oak cabinet, green tea. A blooming meadow in summer, along with a shelf full of dried spices.
    • Taste
Without water he was too hot for me. Charcoal grill with water, blooming chamomile, dried rosemary, thyme, lavender. Dry red wine, prunes, orange; later then eucalyptus menthol, cough syrup.
    • Finish
Oak cabinet and prune, then Eukalytos menthol, shoe polish, liquorice, yeah, that's just mine, more spices behind, long, plenty of chamomile tea.

I've been drinking whisky for a few years now. Too peaty with no depth, and unbalanced unlike the OB of laphroaig. Only so so. I would not recommend it.
