Similar quality to Peter Blake. Nothing impressive.

You can likely find similar Sherry dram to this with 1/5 the price.

A pretty nice dram, but by no means one of the top Macallan and the price is of course a joke.
    • Nose
Full aroma herrry, orange oil, a little engine oil, sweet dried fruit, honey, caramel and milk chocolate, some dates and raisins vllt. also in between, vanilla
    • Taste
Orange oil everywhere, autumn leaves, motor oil, blood orange, brown sugar, ginger, some tobacco, thyme, old oak, toffee, dark honey, burnt creme brulee, nice powerful
    • Finish
Medium long, leaves a little bit, is bittersweet with the oak, honey, orange zest and dark malt

The Macallan 1824 Series is collection released for the Travel Retail market. This Estate Reserve single malt is part of that collection and was matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned Spanish oak hogsheads.

I'm quite confident the one I tasted is a newer version than the 2009 listed here (possibly 2017 since they said it was a brand new release), but I can't be 100% certain and since this is the only version on WB...Macallan apparently claim this is a 21yr but it's a NAS and we all know what that means. Even if it is 21 years it obviously has some amount of younger whisky in it or they would've just called it 21.Not the best Mac by any stretch of the imagination, but far better than anything I've tried from the colour range. Certainly smooth whisky, goes down real nice. Rich honey, dark chocolate, plenty of typical Macallan various fruitiness, apricots, apples, a little cherry, demarara sugar, liquorice. Mint leaf but only after the wonderful chocolate they'd paired this whisky with.  Finish is long, nice and warming. Was this better than the (supposedly) 18yr Maker's Edition tasted along side it? hmm... maybe, but only just, because it was a bit richer (probably the European oak coming thru)

This travel retail exclusive comes from a mix of sherry and bourbon casks and sherry hogsheads, and it’s dark gold, oily and thick in the glass. The nose is complex and dry, slighly woody, with notes of cocoa and dark chocolate. The taste is creamy and smooth with a pleasant spicy kick and a hint of citrus. The finish is long and spicy. By the way, a small splash of water only makes this one even better!

  14. bull10298 scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

The distiller declares that "Drawing on casks which deliver a maximum intensity
and depth of flavour, this single malt includes some traditional Sherry seasoned
hogshead casks specially reserved for this expression. Non-chill filtered and
bottled at the old-style 80o proof, more commonly known as '20 under', this is a
dram with real character." Sweet and poised on the nose, with warm leather and
nutmeg. Full-bodied and smooth in texture, with treacle, mixed spices, citrus
fruits and some smoke in the mouth. The finish is long, with mellow spices,
    cocoa and oak.

    • Nose
      Soft and sweet. Pear crumble.
    • Taste
Initially sweet and fruity, then a trace of almond and apple pip,and finally a
tidal wave of pepper and peat.
    • Finish
Long with the oak coming through.

Fruity sherry aroma, dried figs, sultanas,

cardamom, peat, heather honey and vanilla. Marzipan sweet taste,

liqourice, cinnamon, floral honey, ripe melon, chocolate, espresso and

herbs. Medium long, spicy and malty end

  22. WhiskyNotes scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

The sherry seasoning influence in this Macallan works pretty well, but the wood is rather loud. Overall a tad too focused on oak and spices for me.
    • Nose
A sweet sherry theme with dried fruits, ginger cake and quite some cedar wood. Also a classic combo of chocolate and oranges. Nutmeg. Fresh and rather modern, lacking a bit of thickness though.
    • Taste
Good balance between the original spirit and the sherry. Plenty of oak again, all kinds of spices (ginger, nutmeg, clove, pepper). Really spicy this one. The sherry sweetness fades away which leaves only the spices and hints of slightly bitter oranges, as well as some dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Quite long, still very spicy (especially pepper and nutmeg) with some woody dryness in the end.

  23. Drochaid scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A delightful combination of soft fruits, underlined with notes of ginger, vanilla, fudge and citrus.

Rich and fuity with an intense depth of oak wood and spiced orange

Long with sweet citrus and oak wood notes.

"The Macallan Estate Reserve draws on casks selected for maximum

intensity and depth of flavours, including some sherry-seasoned

hogsheads, and has been bottled at the traditional strength of 80 UK

prooof (45.7%). The 1824 Collection is a range of Macallans released

    for the travel retail market."

  25. BenNevis scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Nose has citrus, vanilla and a little ginger.

Palate is rich with sherry, oak and spice

Finnish is long and sweet with oak and spice.

This is a very nice whisky but i think the standard 18yo is smoother and a better all round whisky.
