Proper, proper mature Islay whisky. If you are like me, and you'd rather drink something with more subtleties instead of overpowering peat, than this is a treat.
    • Nose
Such a sweet, mature, barbecue-esque type smoke. Superbly balanced with lots of little complexities. Slightly mineral, with hints of smoked vanilla custard, and also fruitier notes like overripe banana and a whiff of pineapple. Finally some aniseed as well. I could nose this for a very long time.
    • Taste
A nice salty arrival, followed by seaweed, cracked black pepper and hints of iodine. The barbecue smoke (accompanied by some lovely cured meat) is soft and subtle. A touch of oak. Again, the balance is perfect.
    • Finish
Lingering smoke. Sweet. Finally some yellow fruits. Long.

A beautifully matured, expressive blended malt from the Isle of Islay. Compared to the juvenile, impetuous Big Peat without an age statement, this limited edition captivates with its great balance of sweetness, fruitiness and warming spiciness, paired with discreet smoke and peat. Very soft and elegant. Not the most complex dram on this planet, but a real pleasing one for cosy hours in front of the fireplace.

I thank Douglas Laing for the sample! https://www.whisky-connaisseur.de/tasting-notes-english/blended-malt-whiskies/
    • Nose
Smooth start on the nose with peat and smoke, charcoal and cold ash. Slightly minerally, nicely mixed with custard and burnt caramel. Sweet with smoked malted barley and a filigree but delicate fruitiness of yellow apples, white peaches and ripe bananas. It's not the big peat punch but very mild, smooth and mature. Very appealing!
    • Taste
Bold, intense and sweet on the palate with caramel, barley sugar, ripe yellow apples and a touch of citrus in the back. Then warming with cracked black pepper, nutmeg and oak. Slightly peaty with hints of seaweed, iodine and sea salt. This is all wrapped in gentle cold smoke. Appears very mature and balanced - a great mouthfeel.
    • Finish
The finish is long, warm, and slightly sweet with barley sugar and some yellow apples. Becomes slightly dry on the tail with a touch of oak, cloves and soft peat.

With water: A little fresher on the nose when water is added. There's more yellow fruit coming through with lemons and peaches. Slightly more peppery and oaky with a tamed peaty smokiness. Prickling and sweet on the palate with citric fruits - lemons and oranges - while peat and smoke is fairly tamed. Smoked custard and slightly dry oak towards the finish. The finish is fairly dry with oak, cloves, sea salt and hints of peat.

NOSE: Very mild peat smoke, rich, creamy nose, iodine (91-92p)
TASTE: The arrival is rich, almost sweet, toffeed. On the mid palate lots of maltiness, sweet ashes, toffee, even some honey, citrus, liqorice, (91-92p)
EXIT: Dry, some black pepper, citrus, mildly astringent (88p)
OVERALL: A wonderfully balanced and complex old Islay vatting. TOTAL SCORE 91 (90) points.

Good peat smoke, ash, lemon, a hint of sweet fruit, long finish. From the series "I want a bottle". Although I could think of Caol Ila 25+ blindly. 22.5-22.5-22.5-22.5

Perfect balance in this whole whiskey!

The characteristic big Peat nose has made way for a very mature Islay whiskey.

Subtly on the nose the scents of the sea with soft smoke.
Only the sea scents with the citrus could indicate that this is a big peat.

It mainly reminds me of a very good caol ila.
    • Nose
Subtly smoky, charcoal, wet ash, citrus, coffee beans, rose petals, pineapple, plasters and fresh sea scents.
    • Taste
Pepper, fatty butter, toast, lightly medicinal, vanilla, banana, smoke (subtly not overpowered), wood, ripe apples.
    • Finish
Long, fresh, little sour in the cheek pouches, smoke.

    • Nose
Smoke and peat, sea freshness, sweet fruits, lemon jam, leather furniture, ash, smoked meats, freshly sawn board, fresh bandage. 22
    • Taste
Moderate, moderately dry. Black pepper, smoke and peat, ash, salt, fruit caramel, oak barrel motifs. 21
    • Finish
Very long, smoothly fading, smoky-phenolic. 22
Classic whiskey from Islay, smoky, not very complex, but tasty, rounded and well balanced. Balance 23.
      Total 88

N: Seashells, pine tar, wool, lemon and lime zest, crunchie bar, wet ash, leather, pepper
T: lemon candy, wet ash, candy corn, oily - nice mouthfeel,
F: Really long finish that just keeps going and going. Lemony, chalky, sponge toffee, smoke and ash forever, some lime zest, smoked brisket. Great finish. The best part for me.

Really an exceptional blend. A solid component of this must be Caol Ila. Definitely ok with me as 25+ year Caol Ila is almost always great. There is a part of this that reminds me of older bourbon matured Ardbeg, and that is a great thing too. Either way it’s a bourbon dominated old peater and I love it. Great stuff.
